A kiss with death
Remisa are perfect because they both see death as the only way to love. As something inevitable that will ultimately come as a result of loving someone and something they must willingly do if they truly love them. Neither of them can imagine it any other way. Misa telling Light to kill her if she becomes a burden before theyve even known each other 20 minutes. Rem saying dying to extend Misaâs life is a sacrifice sheâll happily make. They just donât understand that sometimes love is living- and loving each other is maybe the only way they could ever come to understand that.
Hey look its The Characters i sure do love The Characters
"Humans are such vile creatures"
Memes be upon ye
death note musical does such a damn good job of establishing character motivations and i want !! to point it out more !!!! especially "They're Only Human" bc i feel that song doesn't get enough analysis as it deserves.
not only does it introduce ryuk and rem as key characters, but it establishes and pushes them into discovering their overall motivations. i view their back-and-forth lines as a debate, specifically the kind of debate where the parties are building their arguments as they present them. i think it's a disservice to treat this as "ryuk & rem in their own silly little worlds becoming obsessed with humanity." since i have free will, i'm going to convert all of their beginning lines into some kinda mock trial thing for funsies:
RYUK: Just by the viewing the footage of these mortals, one will come to the immediate understanding that these people are fools. Fools who helplessly follow the same rigid routines under the false belief that eventually these routines will grant them their idea of success. REM: They are in fact fools, but we only recognize this due to our overseeing nature as shinigami. If one takes a moment to understand their worldview, their routines become fascinating rather than foolish. They have such little knowledge of the world, yet they still attempt to string logic behind everything they encounter. RYUK: Their attempt to put logic behind everything is laughable at best. REM: I feel sympathetic for them. It is pitiful. Attempts to learn should not be considered foolish. It's not their fault that they have no means of acquiring an answer. RYUK: They are not looking for an answer, they are looking for a scapegoat to believe their lives have more meaning than they actually do. REM: True. Regardless, they still give their best effort to make sense of this "scapegoat" in order to improve their lives. RYUK: I don't understand how they cannot connect the dots by now. They follow these routines for their entire lives and never realize that their routines provide them nothing. They die looking for this "answer to life." REM: Is that not exactly why it is fascinating? They are living under a preconceived notion, yes, but they keep persevering. RYUK: That's fucking boring, Rem. They're only human. They are mere mortals -- mere idiotic mortals. Quit wasting time on them and find something more interesting to focus on. REM: They're only human. They shouldn't be blamed for not having the full story. If anything, their lack of knowledge should draw us closer to them. They continue to have a zest for life despite never gaining anything from it. We could learn something from their so-called foolishness.
guys ppLLEAASSE tell me u see the vision. ITS SO FUCKING GOOD GUYS PLEASE. maybe ill throw this into objection.lol later.
Death Note AU where Sayu knows her brother is Kira, knows about the Death Note, about Ryuk, all of it. She ties ribbons on Ryuk and teases him about being Light's magical companion and makes him watch magical girl anime with her so he'll know what she means, and he has to laugh because okay she does sort of have a point. She drags Light into McDonalds to his absolute horror, because she decided that Ryuk needs to try the deep-fried apple pies (Ryuk nearly passes out, new favourite vice unlocked). She makes both of them laugh and helps Light stay a bit more sane and a bit more connected to ordinary life.
But that leads right into Sayu keeping deadly secrets from the other half of their family, because she loves Light enough to believe in him even about this. Sayu maybe even agreeing to be the hiding-place for the Death Note, when L is getting too close and Light is afraid he might get caught with it. She can't use it, she says, she can't kill people, but she can hide the notebook and help keep Light safe.
And then L has Light arrested anyway and Light had no chance to set up any kind of contingency, so as soon as the killings stop L will know for sure that he's got the right person. And little Sayu Yagami whom nobody but Light ever thought was anything more than ordinary, Sayu the shining heart of Team Kira whose only role there was supposed to be to permanently remind her brother that truly good people exist and they're who he's creating his new world for, Sayu who holds the Death Note but always swore she'd never ever write in it herself...
Sayu Yagami watching the evening news through tears and gritted teeth, pen shaking in her grasp as she writes down the names of the guilty, while a shinigami with glitter ribbons in his feathers crouches beside her with his hand on her shoulder for support because she can't do this she can't she can't but she can't leave her brother to die.

I love the Death Note anime and I'll recommend it to literally everyone (I'm not exaggerating when I say my entire extended family, their friends, and basically every single one of my friends has seen Death Note because of me. If I were to count how many people have watched Death Note because of me the number would at least be 50+ and that's a conservative estimate.)
Having said that, the Death Note anime honestly isn't the story I fell in love with and it comes down to a very specific aspect of Light's characterization that changes the entire genre: unlike the Death Note manga, the anime is NOT A TRAGEDY.
The Death Note manga follows the script of a classic Shakespearean tragedy basically to a T. Light is living a good life. He's popular, has plenty of friends, very close relationships with his family, he's beyond successful in school, has plenty of future prospects, and the world is basically his oyster. Something is missing... but he's a very impressive teenager. Maybe he'll find it one day on his own. Then - deus ex machina! A dark supernatural force enters his life. He should not mess with it. He does. One by one he loses every single thing that matters to him â once that thing is his father, he enters a downward spiral he can absolutely never recover from.
The Death Note anime takes a very different approach to Light. He's portrayed as isolated, listless, angsty and quite serious. His problems with the world run deep and he's become jaded with it to a point of completely dissociating from his life. He's popular but we don't see him hanging out with anyone unless he's using them somehow. His family relationships are there but they aren't very well-established. The first episode of the anime is called "Rebirth" because they chose to portray finding the death note as the best thing that ever happened to Light. This is also why symmetrically they give him a much gentler death than he gets in the manga - anime Light kind of couldn't help it. This was his "good life." Manga Light fucked with something he shouldn't have when he had no reason to and "got what he deserved."
This is why certain plot beats that are so powerful in the manga simply don't land in the anime. When Mello kidnaps Sayu in the manga we understand right away exactly how the stakes have shifted and what an insane toll on Light this is going to be. The genre of the story shifts a little from pure action to family drama but that's been a LONG time coming as Light has been complexly navigating (or systematically ignoring...) his deep family relationships and what Kira means for them for the entire story. In the anime by contrast a lot of people felt the pacing grinds to a complete halt. When Soichiro dies they're not even sure if Light is actually crying.
Okay guys uhhâŠRyuk from Death Note is GENUINELY my comfort character, so uhâŠIâm gonna write some headcanons about him for other people who love Ryuk as much as I do :3
-He is scary in the uncanny valley kind of way. You kinda get what Iâm saying? He is pretty humanoid, there are just certain things that make him uncanny, like his nose, his eyes, his proportions..heâs human enough, but not human enough ya know?
-Within the first few nights of him being around, youâd wake up to him kind of being perched on your windowsill, his eyes reflecting off of light in your room. He looked over quickly, his smile and eyes the only thing visible, like an even more deranged Cheshire Cat, safe to say you screamed and woke your parents up! XD
-Yeah, heâs creepy as shit, but heâs funny, his laugh, his subtle, dark, and dry sense of humor, it kind of made you less scared of him.
-He doesnât have full eyelids. He doesnât necessarily blink, more so he has a weird eyelid akin to the second eyelid birds do, they just protect his eyes in harsh conditions and keep them from drying out when he âsleepsâ
-Tying into that, he doesnât exactly sleep, he just enters a weird state of silence, just kinda sits there, his half-eyelids shut, itâs creepy, very very creepy to a human, but youâve gotten used to it after knowing him long enough.
-He watches you closely, you can always feel his eyes in the back of your head. He stares for a good three minutes and then heâll talk your head off.
-I headcanon that if he feels love, itâs in a weird, bird way, if he cares about someone, he brings them odd things like dead animals or coins. He feels respect, familiarity, and sometimes comfort as well. Heâs complex in his emotions. It just really depends on who holds the death note at the moment, heâs usually felt neutral about the holder, and in rare occasions, heâll genuinely love the holder.
-Not even a headcanon give this guy apples.
-Youâve exposed him to cuddling. He doesnât exactly know how to feel about it, heâs a shy guy (kinda like with Misa in that one episode) and will just kinda freeze and allow it.
-He likes death metal/deathcore. He was exposed to it on a random Tuesday, and itâs safe to say itâs one of the only things he wants to hear now other than the sound of his own voice LMAO.
-He over analyzes your behaviors and says silly things like âpshh, humansâ.
YAYAYAY I LOVE RYUK DAWG, IF YOU GUYS WANT MORE DEATH NOTE (RYUK ESPECIALLY) HEADCANONS ID BE GLAD TO WRITE SOME MORE BYE BYEEE :333
Fuck you, Matsuda x Ryuk's your Death Note tag
