the entire appeal of the croissant is that it is a layered pastry item. it has a light flaky texture. the layers are in there specifically to create a fluffy, airy eating experience. that's the intention of the lamination process. having so many layers of butter and thin pastry dough make the croissant puff up when it's baked so that when you bite into it the pastry has a texture similar to puff pastry. the entire point is to fill the pastry with air. therefore any trendy hybrid variant of the croissant such the "cruffin" or the "cronut" or the worst offender of all the "croffle" which involve jamming the unbaked croissant or compressing it into a flat shape completely betray croissant as it was originally intended. they defeat the nature of the croissant by forcing it into something it was never meant to be, removing the unique core of its identity, killing its appeal and thus its entire reason for being. now am i saying you can't enjoy a cronut or croffle? of course i would not say this. you can enjoy any pastry you want to enjoy because it's your time on earth. i want you to enjoy your croffle. you should enjoy your croffle. also, you can commit any sin you like and i can't stop you nor do i want to. i won't hear your arguments because you don't need to convince me. but you must understand, as you eat it, that the croffle should not exist. it is a mistake. it is an insult not only to the croissant but to me as an individual. i am not french
This reads as someone with a strong moral code (people should be free to experience joy without arbitrary regulation, you don’t have to like what other people like but your discomfort is your own problem) trying to maintain their faith in a time of hardship (they keep doing weird shit to croissants)

It was not Light’s fault.
She only thinks this after the panic of hauling Ryuzaki back up to cliff level, though, which is a nice boost to her morale. See, Ryuzaki, I’m a good person after all, can I get a 30% discount on my suspicion percentage? 40% if you consider the distinct lack of eyewitnesses?
No, it won’t count for anything. If Ryuzaki had fallen for good then Light would have died too and so everything she does for Ryuzaki with these handcuffs on is self-preservation and if any part of her was desperate to witness blood-matted black hair between sharp rocks she would rightfully term it suicidality. Light has never been suicidal. She’s never had a reason to be and so she’s never been. Sometimes the way Ryuzaki’s laptop outlines the crumpled folds of her white sleeves in soft blue shadows at night makes Light half-dream about tall buildings and wind, but that shouldn’t mean anything at all.
“Ryuzaki,” she says, “no one better call me uncreative after that.”
Silence.
“Ryuzaki?”
More silence. She turns to find Ryuzaki still stuck in that crouch, staring off at the woods with wide eyes.
Oh, Light realizes, silently canceling that boost to morale.
She makes her voice gentler. “Are you alright?”
“Just a moment, Yagami-kun,” Ryuzaki says, quiet, steady.
“Right.”
The seconds tick by. At some point Ryuzaki started leaning on her shoulder. It’s nice. It’s friendly. Ryuzaki’s body heat is no match for the return of that dream-wind howling through her bones, which is fine.
Light’s watching a bird land on a tree branch by the time Ryuzaki says, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
She watches as Ryuzaki unfurls herself to standing position and brushes the dirt off her jeans. “Shall we return to the trail, Yagami-kun?”
I know this is the jaded post-irony website and we all wanna be funny, but I am genuinely asking. Please, tell me about a good memory you have with some loved ones and a stack of standard playing cards.
thinking of how Sachiko always respects Light's autonomy and privacy, compared to Soichiro's willingness to violate that to the highest degree if it means "protecting" his son. And by extension, that as a depiction of how many parents view their children.
