“Oh, don’t worry about it!” Fennel waved her hand nonchalantly, dismissing any worries Cynthia may have. The whole point of the trip was that the champion wasn’t prepared, which would make the study more authentic. Obviously the results were going to be a bit off, as Cynthia was going to be aware of Fennel’s presence.
Oh, she hadn’t explained what she planned to study! After all, the whole point of coming all the way to Sinnoh was to purely satisfy her own curiosity. Her most recent obsession was different myths from every region, other than Unova as she spent her whole life there, and she just had to do a study on it. Sinnoh just happened to be the region whose mythology was most interesting. Plus, Aurea had informed her about Cynthia, who just happened to be a mythologist.
Being a psychologist at heart (when she wasn’t an oneirologist, of course~), nothing could stop from doing a participant observation study. And the object of observation was none other than Cynthia.
“You see, I’ve been reading up on mythology as of late. When Aurea told me about you - a real mythologist, and not one of those phonies that walk around claiming to know everything - I knew I had to come here as soon as possible! And I don’t want to put any pressure on you, oh no. Just go about your day, and I’ll observe!” At this point, Fennel probably looked like some crazed fangirl, but it was all in the name of research.
A scientist interested in mythology? That was rare. In her experience, scientists didn’t usually care for the stories of old until they were proven without a shadow of a doubt, a goal to which she was still working toward with the more recent of the leads she’d been chasing. And Cynthia fully intended to be able to show her findings, and not just tell about them.
“Okay,” she said slowly, still altogether unsure what to really make of the request. Despite Fennel’s encouragement, Cynthia couldn’t help but feel just the slightest bit of pressure: she still wasn’t convinced that the sight of her hunched over her messy desk, bits of paper strewn about the room, was worth much observation. If Fennel had come to study a mythologist in action, then she should probably see one doing some action other than page flipping and note taking.
Also, Cynthia didn’t know how she felt about letting an effective stranger bear witness to the state of utter disarray she knew her office to be in; her life as a secret slob was one of her most closely guarded secrets. If Fennel really had come to study her whilst she studied... Well, she could only hope that whatever scientific report that came out of this, if there was to be some sort of report, didn’t put her and her bad habits to too much shame.
“I was thinking of doing some field work, today. Would that be agreeable to you? If you’ve been reading about Sinnohan myths, it’s always worthwhile going to see some of the artefacts in person. I’d been planning on revisiting some of the sites myself.” It’d be easier not to feel nervous this way, too. She always felt at peace amongst ruins, her thoughts enough to get lose self-consciousness in.
