Learnings from Failure case analysis workshop
Original post here : https://campusdiaries.com/node/31758
After testing assumptions by field research, learning to organize collected data and creating mind map of potential users. The next step of processing data was ‘Failure case analyses.
As prep for that, we defined the need statement and a corresponding ideal scenario. Deviations from this scenario would help us to figure where our product/service can step in.
Possible deviations observed in the user research were termed as failures. A list was made of such failures along with possible causes behind them. Rephrasing words from Divya - This dissection of failure cases and categorization of causes into certain ‘natures’, helps visualize the problem with extreme ‘specificity’. For example, categorizing causes as 'perception related', 'behavior related', 'lack of information related' etc.
And as Adithya pointed out, this activity assists in prioritizing the causes we want to tackle by our product/service. Further, nature of the cause helps figuring out the approach to be taken towards solving it. And as the user personas identified from this analysis become distinct, researcher can decide what level of customizability might be required in the product/service offered.
Other outputs of this activity include
Zeroing in on ‘functions’ to be performed by features of the offering
Identification of when and where those features will fit in customer’s experience
Finding out what was missed during the user research
Looking forward to future sessions in Product development module.
