If you're a guy who feels you can't get a date because of feminism, then you're not flirting right.
“I can’t date because of feminism” seems to be trending on Google, so let me be the first to say: Yes, okay, sure.
You can’t get a date because of feminism in the same way you can’t “date” because it is illegal to lock women in your bedroom and demand that they love you.
But if you are a man who can’t get a date with someone who actually likes you, it’s not because of feminism. It’s because you are someone people do not want to date. Possibly because you spend a lot of time whining about how women having rights has made dating impossible for you.
Your metaphor implies that you do not understand what is meant by saying that #MeToo made dating harder. It has nothing to do with demanding love, it has to do with having the confidence to try to show your interest in a comfortable, balanced and understanding way.
The issue is that a small but significant minority of stories from the #MeToo campaign were about men who didn’t get the hint. This causes problems for the kinds of people who want to be considerate, because if not getting the hint will feel like harassment, then maybe it’s not worth the risk to flirt? Why would I take the chance that I blunder so badly that I hurt someone?
Don’t get me wrong, this is irrational thinking, and is entirely spawned from our insecurities. But it’s one of those very regular emotional responses, made worse for the kinds of men who actually do want to be considerate.
