There is nothing as eerie as having an owl fly over you at night. You can *sense* something’s there, but it’s utterly silent in passage.

The reason why owls don’t make any noise when they fly is that the leading and trailing edges of each feather is specialized. The leading edge has comb-like barbs, and the trailing edge is ragged. This reduces turbulence over the feather and therefore muffles the sound air makes when it travels over, and thus the wing!
