“She wore flowers in her hair and carried magic in her eyes.”
Shades of Black
The shades of black so beautiful they blend into the earth yet they carry a past so heavy on your skin black woman. A past that reflexes a constant swing of hatred towards your skin. A past that has created a colour theory that casts your darker shade of black further back into the minds and the eyes of your own people.
Sloping down your spine and tracing down your collar bones and down into your heart it is rooted in you that if you are dark you are not beautiful. It seeps through your pores and sleeps in your mind that your sister is more beautiful than you are because she is lighter than you are.
When the sun comes you face the other direction, when you feel it’s warmth you’d rather feel the cold of the shade. You fail to see the radiance and glow your skin is projecting because you were raised to think you are dark enough already. Dark enough already not to play in the sun? Dark enough already not find your future match? Dark enough already to make your children dark enough? Enough because you are dark already!
The media tries to silence you by casting you as the shadow of your own sister, if you are light you are right if you are dark “to the left”. Today the media has turned you into a color palette one can so easily dip and swirl their fingers in, leaving the dark shade of black full of course. Failing to paint you as you are.
And just like that you are trapped, you are confined into walls of standards you cannot exist in.In bleach you dip in, trying to lighten your skin, at the same time killing your melanin. Not even make up can hide the blotches you are now covered in.
If you use both your hands to cover your face black woman, then who will hold up the sun? If you bury your face in the sand at the sight of this issue then who will hold up your image? Can you not see that the conflict going on between yourselves has ripped open the scarlet wounds on the backs of your ancestors? Can you not stop this skin colour contest that is infested amongst us?
Don’t forget to watch this poetry film based on colourism, Happy Black History Month!
Don’t be afraid to take up space.

Shades of Black
This is my first attempt at Poetry Film: SHADES OF BLACK (Restoring Black) based on colorism, a practice of discrimination by which those with lighter skin are treated more favorably than those with darker skin. It is more evident amongst women with regards to feminine beauty.
One of the reasons that inspired me to create this film is that there are very few films that explore and address colorism and its impact on PoC.
Thank you for watching!
More work to come with Thembi.
