Of course I need to start with this ICONIC Atsuhina quote and its impact! Honestly, itâs probably the reason a lot of Atsuhina Shippers decided to ship Atsuhina. And personally, I think itâs Atsumuâs most badass move. He saw Hinata, wanted to set for him, and SET HE DID.
To really understand this lines impact, you need to consider just how much Hinata has to beg setters to toss for him. His entire middle school career, he had to make deals and offer favours to friends in exchange for sets. He had to practice with the girls team, even though girls volleyball is slightly different, net being lower and focused on different parts of volleyball than menâs volleyball is. When he got to highschool, he had trouble with his setter (Kageyama) before they even began playing together, and since the start they wanted to be rivals, not teammates. We donât really see Suga setting to him much, but even if he does I believe itâs only because theyâre teammates and hinata had to ask him. It wasn't initiated by Suga and Suga wonât stay after practice to toss to him. Hinata would probably have to beg Kenma too, and Kenma would get tired after a while. No other setters expressed any interest in tossing for him, some characters even going as far as to say he only has worth with Kageyama.
but then comes Atsumu Miya, The number 1 High school setter in Japan, sees Hinataâs hunger for the game and recognises his skill and wants to play with him rather than against him. For the first time in his life, a setter wants HIM specifically to toss to. Let me repeat, For the first time in his life , a setter comes to him instead of the other way around. He doesnât even have to beg. In some Atsuhina fics, Iâve seen this referred to as the volleyball idiot version of a marriage proposal.
To Hinata, itâs finally being seen as his own player rather than a part of a pair. Itâs having someone that wants to make him fly just as much as he wants to take flight. And coming from the greatest setter his age in Japan, that means something.
To Atsumu, he found his dream spiker, someone he first thought a scrub that exceeded all his expectations and more. Someone who - you can see in his eyes - loves the game just as much as him. Someone with the same hunger to win that his very own twin lacks.
It also shows just how confident Atsumu is, in both himself and Hinata. Because, think about it, for them to play together they have to get on a team together. But with so many teams, how likely is that? (Well, they did get on the same team but Atsumu doesn't know that so shh) which means, he was probably referring to playing together in Japan's national team. To have someone be so confident in your success after only playing one game against you is a HUGE compliment.
We've not only taken away all of the physical spaces for our children to exist in, we're now taking away the electronic ones as well. I'm sure this won't have any negative consequences.
Doing this benefits these species tremendously. They can become so rare over such a vast area as people destroy the only plants they can eat, every single one that survives makes a positive difference!

sometimes during a frustrating match, he can get REALLY angry. Think mad dog. He usually beats himself up over it afterwards, mad he let his anger issues shine through because 'its just a volleyball match, it shouldn't be that serious'. Playing the game and slamming those balls down is kind of an outlet for his anger. One of the reasons he started playing was because volleyball is a good, healthy outlet for his negative emotions.

One of his weaknesses is his lack of communication : he tries a new strategy without informing his spikers, leading to problems. This is in part to show off and it part because it just makes sense to him to do everything instead of wasting time on explanations
SUPER FUCKING FAST. Like. This man zooms around the court so quickly that people claim it seems like he's teleporting (đ) .

Powerful, precise spikes. He doesn't do much of them during games but when he does they're singular strong attacks that land 95% of the time and not many in quick succession. Usually brings these down towards the end of the match, when he has kept his energy while the other players are slowing down.
very arrogant/overconfident though. Whenever he spikes he is 10000% sure that it will land and it can throw him off his game if the ball gets picked up.
best suited in short games. He doesn't like long, drawn out 5 set matches.
Also good at a supporting role, but usually supports teammates outside of games by developing machines to help them improve

very supportive. He doesn't feel the need to shine or be an ace like his older brothers. He's very content in playing a supportive role like being a decoy and doesn't feel overshadowed. He DOES however, have a need to prove himself.

He's more of like, a disabler in the sense that instead of focusing on recieving the ball, he focuses on just limiting their options so other people can receive it. Like oh, you think there's multiple spots open? Think again, Mikey is watching and now you only have one area to spike the ball into. He mostly stalls the opponent
often leads people into traps, like leaves an area of the court seemingly open and then once the Spiker thinks its safe and directs the ball there he slides in to receive.
DUE TO THIS THOUGH, he is more reliant on other players in the game than usual players are (like in canon, he works best fighting with someone and visibly struggles more when he fights alone). He's best when there's people to work off of.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 3: Michelangelo
This is a continuation of my first post about analyzing each of the Turtles' (+April's) fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses in a fight, and how Rise uses that to highlight different aspects of their character. I highly encourage you read that first before hopping into this one for full context. There is a bit of a TL;DR at the end.
Mikey is a very fast and acrobatic fighter, allowing him to move around and attack in ways his brothers are unable to. His small frame means that he is naturally inclined to be faster than his bigger brothers, and when paired with his gymnastic skills, he becomes an exceptionally swift and nimble fighter. He excels when fighting offensively â in fact, heâs the most offensive fighter on the team - and while he can handle himself on the defensive, it isnât his strong suit. Mikeyâs primary form of defense is to dodge the enemy as he can maneuver himself around foes in a way that makes him hard to keep track of, and even harder to hit.
Mikey also has the greatest versatility of the whole team. Like his brothers, he excels with non-traditional weapons, but Mikey seems to be particularly talented in this regard. Mikey also has a wide range of mystical abilities that he uses to extend the reach of his weapons by manipulating the chains of his nunchakus or kusari-fundo, improving his maneuverability, or even throwing comically large objects. This versatility in combination with his dexterity gives him the ability to attack enemies both nearby and at a distance with relative ease, while slightly improving his defensive skills.
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
The Wild Card:
Mikey is the resident wild card as his fighting style wide range of abilities and make him the most flexible fighter on the team (both literally and figuratively) and seem very chaotic in a fight. His job is to be the unpredictable element in battle â he rounds out the team by being able to the changing needs of a fight. This is most effective when Mikey is on the offensive as he is less restricted in his fighting method than his brothers are - if a certain type of attack is needed, odds are Mikey can deliver. He can deliver quick, successive hits with his wild movements and fast reflexes, or he can utilize his wide variety of mystic abilities to blindside the enemy with an unexpectedly powerful attack. He can also help in disorienting an enemy or catching them off guard with his acrobatics and impressive strength despite his unassuming size.
Disabler:
When Mikey doesnât need to fight offensively, he ends up primarily using his abilities to disable his enemies instead focusing as heavily on his attacks. He uses his surroundings to lead enemies into traps or he can manipulate the chains of his weapon(s) to wrap up a foe and inhibit their movement, creating the opportunity to perform a follow-up attack. Even when he throws things like a goddamn building at the enemy, this is usually only used to either crush or stall the enemy as opposed to straight-up defeating them.
Utility:
Due to his smaller size and the nature of his fighting style, Mikey tends to struggle when fighting by himself. He is a much stronger offensive fighter than a defensive fighter, which makes sense when looking at his weapon and physical attributes, but that also means he is at greater risk of losing should he have to fight defensively. While is by no means incapable of fighting alone (we see as much in 'Hot Soup: The Game'), it is noticeably more difficult for him and doesn't work with his strengths as a character.
Mikey's fighting is at his best when he has other people to work off of. His role as the wild card means he is able to assist any of his allies in battle by adapting to their respective fighting style and helping them in a fight without interfering with their attacks. This makes him a particularly good choice as a 'tag team' partner as Mikey can build on others' attacks while they can help him defensively if need be.
How it Plays into His Character:
Since Mikey's greatest weakness in battle (his inexperience) isn't necessarily a character flaw, but simply a product of his young age, his fight style does more to emphasize his personality. We see how Rise directly ties Mikey's fighting style to his character traits, ensuring that his fights still have the same depth as his brothers'.
The wild card role suits Mikeyâs character as it complements his energetic and creative personality. Even outside of battle, Mikey moves in a very lively manner, quickly jumping around and rushing from place to place, which would naturally translate into how he fights. It also means that Mikey isnât tied down to one particular method of attack which wouldnât mesh well with his ADHD tendencies. His creativity also comes into play as his role as the wild card relies on him being clever and resourceful in battle. If he had a more rigid mindset, this would be difficult for him, but as someone who sees the world in an artistic light, Mikey is more inclined to be a bit more inventive in his attacks.
If Raph is the most protective of his brothers, Mikey is the most supportive. Even though Mikey is the youngest brother, he doesnât feel overshadowed by his older brothers, nor does he crave the spotlight the way Leo or Donnie does. He wants to prove himself, but he is more than happy to do so by supporting his family, rather than outshining them. The Disabler role fits this part of Mikey perfectly. By disabling the enemy, he supports his brothers by stopping his foe from hurting others or by helping his allies by giving them a better opportunity to strike. Mikey still demonstrates that he is a capable, strong fighter, while still allowing his brothers to take a more prominent role in the fight.
In a Team Battle:
In a coordinated team attack, Mikey is actually capable of filling any position in the order of attack. His versatility gives him the ability to change his fighting method to fit whichever position he needs to, making his placement in the attacking order entirely situational.
When fighting in a strategic attack with the full team, Mikey is most effective going second, third, or second-to-last (depends on how many people are fighting) rather than first or last. Due to his fast movement and weaponâs versatility, Mikey can follow up on almost any type of attack, making him the best choice to go after more wild attacks that would normally throw off other characters. His role as a disabler also makes him a prime choice to set up a powerful final attack by halting the movement of an enemy and making them vulnerable to a finishing blow.
Mikey is able to go first or last in an attack when needed as he is more than capable of going into a fight quickly and delivering a strong attack by pummeling or crushing the enemy. However, considering that Mikey works best when playing off of his teammates, these are probably Mikeyâs weakest positions in a team fight. He is also limited to really only one type of finishing blow (throwing large objects at people), which goes against his role as the wild card.
I had a really fun time analyzing Mikey's fighting style and roles. While identifying how he fought was pretty simple, understanding just how versatile our boy is was super interesting. I definitely didn't realize until going through this just how varied Mikey is during a fight, and it totally fits his personality. No wonder he's so fun to watch during an action scene.

Donatello: Striker/Support
Fighting Styles:
Categorizing Donnie's fighting style in Rise was surprisingly difficult as Donnie doesn't appear to have an easily identifiable pattern the way his brothers do. However, after I watched all the fights he's in several times over I've come to quite an interesting conclusion:
Unlike his brothers, Donnie doesn't have a specific fighting style - he has two.
Parry and Counterattack
Donnie's primary fight style in the show utilizes a more traditional combat approach (or as traditional as Donnie can get), utilizing his bo in combination with his tech to battle the enemy at close range. This fighting style is an interesting fusion of offensive and defensive techniques to create a style that caters to Donnie's strengths. It involves Donnie goading the enemy into attacking him with a series of swipes and jabs, then using a number of blocks and parry techniques to defend himself until he can find or create an opportune moment to create an opening and hit his foe with a devastating counterattack. While Donnie might not be the strongest turtle physically, his tech and proficiency with his bo make him a force to be reckoned with in his own right.
Glass Cannon
Donnie's secondary method of fighting is one I would best describe as a "glass cannon" fight style. For those of you unfamiliar with it, the term 'glass cannon' comes from video games and TTRPGs and is used to describe a character that can deal a lot of damage, but has very little health and defense in return (think of wizard or ranged classes).
"But wait, âGlass Cannonâ describes the attributes of a character, not their fighting style,â and yes, it does. However, in Donnieâs case, his fighting style changes in such a way that he becomes a glass cannon
With this fighting style, Donnie tends to forgo the close-range, technical combat, instead more ranged attacks that rely solely on his tech. This is Donnie when he is fighting at his most offensive as these attacks can be VERY powerful and can deal a significant amount of damage, but they also leave him rather vulnerable. Donnie puts all his focus on dealing strong singular attacks, but if those fail, he ends up being more exposed to the enemy as his tech has very few defensive capabilities.
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
Striker
Donnie is the team's striker. His role in a fight is to deal powerful, precise hits against the enemy that are intended to quickly and efficiently defeat a foe. Both of his fight styles play into this role and both his Parry-and-Counterattack and Glass Cannon method are built to deliver strong, finalizing attacks. He is often seen entering a battle after his allies instead of charging right in (although he does sometimes do that - especially early on), choosing to be a bit more precise in who he fights, or joining an ally in order to provide that finishing blow if need be. His battleshell gives Donnie an aerial advantage, allowing him to swoop in unexpectedly and strike an enemy, or boost his speed and increase the strength of his attacks. While he is seen, on occasion, fighting outside of this role, he is at his strongest when filling the Striker position.
Support
Donnie also fills the role of the team's Support and assists his brothers, April, and other members in a fight with the use of his tech (ha, get it - he's tech support). This is different than how Mikey supports the team as Mikey directly affects the enemy by disabling them, while Donnie supports the team by directly affecting those he's fighting alongside. Donnie provides numerous helpful gadgets with his tech that has a seemingly infinite number of configurations and uses in battle. His tech-bo had almost every tool under the sun and his goggles can give tactical information in a fight by pointing out weaknesses or additional information about an opponent. He also helps in moving allies around the battlefield using his hammer/tech-bo and battleshell, giving them a stronger advantage in the air and providing aerial assistance if needed. There are times when Donnie supports his allies by inhibiting the enemy, but more often than not his support is provided directly to his team.
Utility:
Donnie's Parry and Counterattack style is, arguably, his best fighting style as he can utilize his tech while fighting without being overly reliant on it. When used properly he can go up against many types of enemies and it allows him to be a bit more adaptable in a fight than he is when he is using just his tech or just traditional fighting techniques.
His Glass Cannon fighting style should not be discredited, however, as it is incredibly strong, but it is more situational than the Parry-and-Counterattack method. There are times when it is useful to have that one powerful attack that can be used to finish off an enemy to deliver an immense amount of damage, but it needs to be done in tandem with his team. When Donnie fights as a Glass Cannon by himself, he becomes incredibly vulnerable and, without anyone to back him up, puts himself at huge risk when his attack fails. Having the others nearby help weaken the enemy, making his attack more effective, or can help defend Donnie should he need it.
Donnie's fighting styles are best suited for short battles against a small number of enemies while he tends to have a hard time in long, drawn-out fights or against a large number of opponents. Donnie's strengths lie in his ability to deliver strong individual attacks, which work best when he is fighting against just a couple of enemies where he can properly focus his energy. However, the longer the fight goes on, the more Donnie begins to struggle - the longer the battle drags on, the more likely Donnie is to get hit. Despite the fact that he does very well on the defensive when using his Parry and Counterattack style, once Donnie gets hit it becomes very hard for him to recover.
Donnie's role as the Striker can conflict with his role as the Support, resulting in him often having to prioritize one over the other. If Donnie plays a more aggressive role in the fight, both his fighting styles don't give much opportunity for him to use his tech for anything but his own attacks. When Donnie needs to fall into his Support role, this means he has to significantly "back off," so to speak, so he can fully deploy and utilize his tech to help his team.
How it plays into his character:
Donnieâs fight style and roles reveal a surprising amount of information about his character, including the complexities of his personality and how his strengths and flaws are demonstrated in the way he fights.
Donnie's Glass Cannon style is the direct result of his arrogance and overconfidence in his tech. Donnie takes pride in his tech and inventions, which isn't inherently a bad thing, however, this tends to feed into Donnie's arrogance, causing him to assume that his inventions could never fail. When he does this in battle, he puts so much emphasis on his tech and his confidence in its success that he doesn't consider the possibility that the attack may not work. However, there are times when the Glass Cannon fighting style is needed, which is when Donnie has to find a balance between relying on his tech for a powerful attack and having the humility to recognize when it may not be the best option.
Donnie's Parry-and-Counterattack fighting style exemplifies how skilled Donnie can be when the best parts of his character come together. This fighting method requires Donnie to be skilled, patient, and tactical; while also demonstrating how Donnie can use his intelligence and engineering in battle without being overly reliant on it. Donnie can be rash and overeager in a fight, especially when it comes to using his tech, but when he uses his Parry-and-Counterattack style he is forced to address that in order to succeed. When Donnie uses his greatest strength, his intelligence, all of these pieces fall into place, making him a very strong fighter.
Donnie's role as a Support may not be very obvious since he tends to fight more offensively, but the way he supports his team in a fight aligns very well with how Donnie expresses his care and affection for his family. Throughout the show, Donnie repeatedly tells us that emotion and affectionate gestures are difficult for him, which could make it seem that he has little care for his family. However, this is far from the case, Rise demonstrates time and time again that Donnie deeply cares about his family, but instead of expressing it outwardly, Donnie's affection comes through in his inventions. We see several instances in the show where Donnie makes upgrades to his tech to cater to his family's needs and interests - and he does the same thing in battle. He has several gadgets specifically designed to keep his family safe, and we see how he modifies his tech to accommodate the needs of others in a fight. The love Donnie has for his family translates into every part of their lives, including battle, even when it isn't immediately obvious to anyone else.
In a Team Fight:
In a combined team effort, Donnie is the best option to go last in a team attack. Given Donnie's role as the Striker and his fighting style that is heavily geared towards singular heavy strikes, it makes sense for him to be the one to deliver that finishing blow. This is where his Glass Cannon style works best as his allies have already worn the enemy down enough to make his final, tech-heavy particularly devastating.
With the mobility and the assistance he can provide with his tech, Donnie can help set up a follow-up attack, but this means he has to take a more passive role in the fight and he doesn't get much of a chance to attack. This can be beneficial when going against weaker opponents, but less so when fighting stronger enemies.
Donnie doesn't work as well as an attacker in the early positions in a team attack as his skills as a fighter are not suited to properly set up a coordinated effort. Even though his Parry-and-Counterattack style can create an opening in the opponent's defense, it also needs a very quick attack to follow up on that, which is difficult to execute without another person nearby. Attacking first or second may also require Donnie to fight his foe for a longer period of time, which increases the chance that Donnie will get hit and won't give him the time needed to recover from it.

Donnie's analysis was definitely the most difficult one of the bunch. Whereas Leo, Raph, and Mikey all have instantly recognizable roles and fighting styles, Donnie's was much more complex. You know he's the tech guy in and out of a fight, but trying to find where he fits into battle beyond that was challenging. Interestingly enough, it mirrors how his own character is presented, where you know Donnie's general shtick early on, but it can be difficult to understand his character beyond the surface level if you don't pay attention.

[TL;DR: Donnie has two distinct fighting styles in the show - one that prioritizes close-range Parrying and Counterattack techniques and one where he prioritizes his tech and becomes a Glass Cannon. These both feed into his role as the team's Striker, where he functions best as the final attack in a team battle - while also acting as the team's Support by assisting his allies with less combative tech. His roles and fighting style are all very indicative of Donnie's overall personality and the complexities of his character.]

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo
Eeeeyyyy it's finally here. This is my analysis of each character's fight style and role post that I teased about a week ago. This turned out to be a hell of a thing, so this will be split into many posts focusing on each character since I have quite a bit to say (and I think Tumblr might break if I put it all into one post). I plan to release one a day, but we'll see how it works out with school.
If there's one thing Rise is known for, it is the show's stellar action animation - it's the reason most people started the show to begin with. The visuals are so strong in these scenes, in fact, that Rise could have easily gotten away with having pointless fights each episode (if the budget allowed that) and still be regarded as a fairly decent show. However, Rise doesn't do that, instead chooses to give its action scenes depth by putting thought into the personality of each character and implementing that into how each of them fights, showing the growth of the protagonists over the course of the show.
After rewatching the show multiple times (seriously, so many times) I began to notice patterns in many of the show's big fights, particularly in how the turtles and April fight and how they cooperate with each other as a team.
I thought it might be fun to categorize and examine how Leo, Raph, Mikey, Donnie, and April fight by breaking it down into their unique fighting styles, their roles and strengths in battle, how they apply those roles, and how all of these demonstrate different parts of their character.
BTW: There's a reason for the order in which I examine each character - it will all make sense by the last post. There's also a bit of a TL;DR at the end, but I encourage you read the full thing (or at least skim it)

Let's start with Leo.
Leonardo: The Strategist/Initiator
Leo was one of the easiest characters to analyze since a major focus of his character arc is the development of his fighting skills and his ability to cooperate with his team and act as a leader.
Fight Style:
Balanced/Well-rounded Fighter
Leo is the most balanced fighter on the team. He is a capable offensive and defensive fighter and has enough physical strength and acrobatics to handle many types of fighting styles. We see him fight everything from paper ninjas to the large Foot Brute and Draxum's hired goons (the dog guys) without seeming to be weak against one type of enemy. He may not necessarily be stronger than them but he is very versatile. However, this means that Leo doesnât have a specific ability that makes him stand out in a fight (mystic and ninpo powers aside) the way his brothers do, and wonât have any inherent advantages that he can utilize when fighting a particular enemy.
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
The Strategist:
Leoâs role as the teamâs strategist is pretty obvious. He may not be given the title of âLeaderâ until the end of season 2, but we see throughout the show that he is a very quick thinker and is skilled at coming up with clever and effective plans. Of course, each member of the Mad Dogs supplies ideas and plans, but Leo is especially good at developing and implementing them. The most obvious example of this is his fight in the Battle Nexus in 'Many Unhappy Returns, but there are other times when he is the one to put all the pieces together (think of the big attack against Draxum in the Shredder armor in 'End Game').'
The Initiator:
Leo acts as the initiator in battle as he is either one of the first into battle or is the one to start a coordinated attack. This doesn't mean he necessarily has to attack first, but that he is usually the one to put the plan into action. This role relies the most on his mystic powers as his portal and teleportation powers give him the maneuverability needed to accommodate any plan. His abilities allow him to enter and disorient the enemy, or he can portal allies into the fight and create opportunities for a follow-up attack. This plays into his strengths as the Strategist as being the initiator can help him begin a strategic attack by maneuvering people or objects into their needed positions.
Utility:
Leoâs skills truly shine in a fight against a few number of enemies as he can better focus his strategies on a specific enemy and direct the battle in his favor. With less pieces in play, he can properly utilize his mystic powers and act as the initiator instead of bouncing around a battle with no real objective in mind. It becomes easier to coordinate attacks with his brothers and allies since they don't have to spend time fighting different enemies.
However, in a fight with multiple enemies, Leoâs skills can be easily overlooked. Sure, he can direct the fight as the Strategist, but thereâs only so much he can do in the middle of the chaos. His role as the initiator isnât all that effective in a fight with many enemies as well as he and his brothers tend to just rush into battle in those situations. However, Leoâs balanced fighting style means he could theoretically go up against every type of enemy and wonât be at a noticeable disadvantage, which is very useful in a chaotic battle.
How it Plays into His Character:
Admittedly, the show is probably the most direct in using fights to show some of Leo's character traits, since so much of his arc is centered on his fighting and use of mystic powers. However, Rise does use this in enough interesting ways to make it worth mentioning.
While his role as the Strategist plays into Leoâs strengths as a character, it also highlights Leoâs problems with team communication. When Leo plans a strategy, he often fails to inform his allies of his plans, which can result in losing the battle or frustrating those around him. The show demonstrates this by having him make strategies in a fight but leaves his allies in the dark and confusing them. Leo does this, in part, to show off, but also because the plan simply makes sense in his head, so it would be easier for him to just do it instead of having to take the time to tell everybody his plan.
The initiator is a good role for Leoâs powers and fighting style, but also feeds into his cockiness and overconfidence in a fight. Leo has a tendency to play the hero and either overestimate his abilities or underestimate his opponent. He may be the best fit for going first in a fight but Rise uses some fights to show how this can conflict with some of his character flaws. When he goes into battle first overconfident and cocky, it only conflicts with the team, but with his own role as the Strategist. He could, theoretically, bring his teammates into the fight after him, but if he thinks he has an easy win in front of him, all strategy goes out the window. Â
His status as a balanced fighter and lack of specialization in battle is a likely source of some of Leoâs insecurities about his place in the group. We see in 'Portal Jacked!' how Leo doesn't feel like he has a proper role on the team - that he's just the face man - which is reinforced by the way he fights in comparison to his team. Leo is well suited to fight a wide range of enemies, but when his brothers have easily identifiable skills that can give them a distinct advantage, it becomes difficult to recognize the advantages he brings to the team as a well-rounded fighter.
Working as a Team:
As mentioned earlier, Leo's strengths as a fighter make him the one best suited for the first attack in a coordinated team strike as it highlights his skills as the Initiator and the Strategist. It shows how well he can fit those roles when he plays to his strengths and overcomes the character flaws that stand in his way. While the others do have skills that may allow them to start the first attack, Leo's abilities and strengths as a fighter give him (and his team) a much stronger advantage in this position.
Leo also does well when he goes second to last in a team attack, as he can finalize a strategy and prepare for a final blow by putting all the pieces into position. However, this is more situational as there are other characters just as well suited for that second-to-last position and can fill that role when Leo needs to be the one to start a team attack.
Leoâs fighting style, however, does make him a poor fit for a follow-up attack or the final attack in a fight. His balanced fighting style means he isnât suited for a strong final attack. While he is technically fine acting as a follow-up attacker, it doesnât really play into his strengths and isnât that effective when fighting with others who are more suited to that role. His balanced fighting style also prevents him from effectively dealing that final blow to an enemy since he doesn't have a specialized strength in this regard. Again, he can do it, he just isn't well suited for it.
The way Rise develops and explores Leo's fight style demonstrates one of my favorite things the show does with his character (in fact, all of its characters). At first glance, he may seem pretty one-note and predictable, but as we go through the show, we see how both his character is actually more complex than we were first led to believe. The fights Leo participates in reflect that, as not only do his skills develop over the course of the show, but we begin to see how it all ties into his personality and growth as a character - making his fights more meaningful than what they may seem.

ROTTMNT Character Fighting Style Analysis - Part 2: Raphael
This is a continuation of my first post about analyzing each of the Turtles' (+April's) fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses in a fight, and how Rise uses that to highlight different aspects of their character. I highly encourage you read that first before hopping into this one for full context. There is a bit of a TL;DR at the end.
(Note: I occasionally differentiate between Raph's mystic powers and ninpo powers in this because his clone powers in the finale are quite a bit different from the powers he has with his tonfas)
Fight Style:
Aggressive and Heavy
Raph is the teamâs resident smasher - he tends to go into a fight with the intention of doing as much damage as possible. He generally prefers to fight on the offensive but has shown that he is capable of handling himself defensively too. His great size and strength mean he can deal strong physical attacks while giving him a distinct defensive advantage, both of which are supported by his mystic powers. He usually fights the enemy head-on, charging in to fight someone one-on-one or mow through a large group of enemies. Raph also has a good bit of speed to back up his attacks, but lacks overall dexterity, causing him to struggle against enemies with better movement or recover when knocked to the ground. Â
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
The Bruiser
As the teamâs âstrong manâ it is only natural that Raph plays the role of the Bruiser in battle, and it is the role we most often see him in throughout the show. He is able to utilize his great strength and aggressive fighting style to deliver strong, devastating hits to his foes in order to weaken them or fully defeat them. In this role, Raph is a very offensive fighter as the Bruiser as he goes in with the intention of defeating his enemies right away with a singular powerful punch, then switching to quicker, smaller punches should his first attack be ineffective. His mystic powers enhance his effectiveness in this role as seems to get a boost in strength when using his large mystic form, while his ninpo powers allow him to deliver more punches in faster succession with his clones.
The Tank
While Raph is more often than not seen going on the offensive, he also acts as the Tank of the team, taking on a more defensive role by taking on stronger enemies that may overwhelm his brothers or protecting them directly. Thanks to his large size, Raph usually ends up going toe-to-toe with equally large enemies, pulling their focus on him instead of his brothers. His inherent toughness also means he can take hits his brothers canât, occasionally shielding them from oncoming damage. His ability to create a mystic construct around himself increases his durability and allows him to better shield himself and his allies.
Utility:
Raphâs greatest advantage is his ability to switch between both an offensive and defensive role depending on the needs of the battle. He almost always starts a fight in the Bruiser role, but should the tides of the battles become unfavorable for the team, he is more than capable of going on the defensive and sliding into the Tank role.
In large-scale fights with many enemies, Raph is best utilized to draw the attention of the stronger enemies, getting them out of the way or distracting them, and allowing his team to better focus their attention on other enemies or the objective of the battle. This technically makes him act as both a bruiser and a Tank, taking advantage of several of Raphâs strengths at once.
Raph is able to effectively hold his own against large groups of enemies as well. This is mostly done with the assistance of his mystic powers, which allows him to extend his reach by manipulating his mystic construct and performing a large sweep over the battlefield. This can also be used against singular enemies, but it becomes far less effective and efficient.
How it Plays into His Character:
The way Raph fights, especially early on in the show, doesn't reveal too many things about his character, but it does do a good job of reinforcing and providing context to many of his character traits.
While the Bruiser is Raphâs preferred role in a fight, it isnât always the best one for him to employ in certain situations. The bruiser role is most effective when fighting aggressively, but it still requires a bit of thought and flexibility, something Raph struggles with. His greatest weakness in battle is his tendency to rush into a battle with a single strategy in mind â smash. When he goes too hard into his Bruiser role by charging in without a plan, it is likely to work against him by making his attacks less effective or leaving him open to an enemy attack. It exposes Raph's difficulty in adjusting his tactics on the fly and reinforces why Raph wasn't the best fit for the leader of the Mad Dogs.
Raphâs role as the bruiser also plays into a part of his character that Rise doesnât focus on too much â his anger. In Rise, Raph is a kind, gentle soul who loves his brothers and family to the point where he hates being separated from them. As we go through the show, we see how Raph does have a tendency to get frustrated and hot-tempered, with the most obvious being in Part 3 of the Finale, but we only really see Raph's anger while he's fighting. Raph doesnât hold back against his enemies and is shown to be more threatening and, dare I say it, angry at villains. Raph is never outright hostile towards his brothers (although he got pretty damn close with Leo in the movie), so we can infer that he gives himself a somewhat more productive outlet for his anger by directing it toward his enemies or protecting his family.
Raphâs role as the tank fits well with his protective, big-brother personality - he has a strong instinct to care for and defend his family, which is why he ends up becoming the Tank in battle. Raph ends up being the one to take on the stronger enemies not just because he is well suited to fight them, but so his team wonât have to. While he may tend to charge forward in a fight, Raph knows when he needs to fall back and protect his allies, quickly switching into a defensive position to help them. Â
In a Team Battle:
In a coordinated team attack, Raph is well-suited to go either second or last as he can deliver a strong follow-up attack to weaken an enemy or deliver a powerful finishing blow. By going second, Raph can apply his aggressive fighting style by closing in on the enemy and dealing significant damage as a continuation of the previous attack. The same applies when Raph goes last in a team attack, as his overwhelming physical strength enhanced by his mystic powers can create a brutal combination than can hit the enemy with a devastating final attack. Which order he goes in depends on the situation and those heâs fighting with, but I would argue he is generally a better fit for going second in battle due to his attacks being more forceful than precise.
Raph doesnât do well going first in a team fight due to his heavy fighting style and his single-minded strategies. When Raph goes in first, in only highlights his greatest weaknesses as a fighter (his tendency to rush in) while his great physical strength can actually be a detriment to a team attack. Raphâs punches tend to send people flying which makes it difficult for someone to follow up on if they have to cross the battlefield to deliver a second attack. His team ends up having to work around Raphâs fighting style, instead of with him.
I had a surprisingly hard time analyzing Raph's fighting style and role in a fight. His fighting style is admittedly, a little one-note, making it easy to identify, but hard to examine and break down. I wanted to do our sweet red boy justice and really explore why he fights the way that he does. Despite what his fighting style might initially suggest, he is far more than just a one-note character and Rise demonstrates that best in what Raph does in a fight, instead of just the way he fights.
