@queenshiiva asked: “I did it because I had to, not because I ever wanted to.”
RICK COULD UNDERSTAND that. How many things had he done that he didn’t want to do? Things that went against every moral, every belief. Things that went against the oath he’d taken as a law-abiding citizen. He swore to protect and serve when they passed him that badge, and now, sometimes, it felt as though he was no better than the criminals he used to cuff. He’d certainly committed the same crimes. BUT SHIVA WAS RIGHT. They did what they had to do. Survival demanded sacrifice, no matter how callous that sounded. ‘We’ve all done things we didn’t want to do,’ the male eventually hummed, offering what he hoped was a reassuring smile. ‘The world didn’t give us much choice.’
He still wasn’t used to this brand, new world. Would he ever be? Doubtful. These past few years, every single day of Rick Grimes’ life had been about survival. Fighting to stay alive. Fighting to keep his people alive. Fighting, fighting, fighting. There’d been no other way. That fight to live, it had become a natural instinct and natural instincts were damn near impossible to break. It didn’t matter that they were in a safer environment. Didn’t matter that Washington appeared to be a safe-zone from Walkers, from Saviors. From Alpha. Rick was still on constant alert. He still jumped at sudden movements. Hand still reached for a Colt no longer there when a noise startled him. Maybe Washington was safe now, but would it always be? Rick wasn’t convinced. Nowhere was safe. Nobody was safe.
It was because of this same paranoia, this constant belief that everything and everyone was a potential threat, that he just couldn’t relax. Not even stood in what appeared to be a harmless coffee shop. Shit, when was the last time he entered a coffee shop? It wasn’t right. This couldn’t be right. All it took was for someone to knock over a chair and Rick had reached for the nearest weapon. He gripped it so tight that knuckles whitened. Minutes passed before he realised everything was fine. That he was brandishing his new-found weapon at a stranger who (probably) didn’t deserve such hostility. ‘Sorry,’ the man quickly apologised, eyes blinking as he also realised his weapon wasn’t a weapon at all. It was a wooden stirring spoon. 'The noise. It.. Sorry.’ There was no point explaining. No one would believe him. Not unless they had lived it too.

It’s all I’m good at.” “I did it because I had to, not because I ever wanted to.” “I -did- care about you, I just had no other choice.” “You should have walked away when you had the chance.” “If we had never met, it would have saved us both some grief.” “I know it hurts, but I’m still glad we had the chance to know each other.” “Hurting you was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.” “I didn’t want it to be like this, but I had no control!” “I guess I’ve just never been a trustworthy person.” “I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t want to forgive me either.” “So? Aren’t you going to say something?” “If I tell you what I did, we’ll probably never see one another again.”
“When were you going to tell me about this?” “Why me? Of all people, why me?” “You planned this all from the beginning?” “I wanted so badly to think you were different.” “How could you lead me along like that?” “None of what we had was ever real, was it?” “So, our friendship didn’t mean anything to you?” “I would have done anything for you, but you’ve ruined all of that.” “All of the things I sacrificed for you didn’t mean a thing?” “I wish I had known when we met that you were such a vile person.” “If I could go back, I would just walk away.” “I forgive you, but I’m not going to forget what you did.” “No. I don’t accept your apology.” “After all your lies, how do I know you mean it when you say you’re sorry?” “I hope you realized what you did was cruel.” “I still care about you.” “Just tell me that your feelings towards me were genuine.” “What on earth is worth betraying someone who loves you?” “If you want to regain my trust, you have to earn it.” “Don’t just say you’re sorry. Show me that you’re sorry.”
You being back with us here, now, that’s everything.
@shrffrckgrms
Rick hadn’t been in Washington long, despite what his distorted memories were trying to tell him. There were images there. False images. They were trying to tell him that the outbreak had never happened. That he still lived at home with Carl, Lori and Judith, but he knew that wasn’t true. He knew it wasn’t true because Judith hadn’t even been born back then. His little girl had been born into chaos. She had been a beacon of pure light during the darkest times and it was memories of her that helped him separate fact from fiction. Washington wasn’t his home. Not this Washington. Still, he’d at least been here long enough to know there was no getting out. Maybe he didn’t want to either. Daryl was here. Maggie too, according to Daryl. Other family members. The only people Rick didn’t realise was there were his children. That was a surprise still waiting for him and apparently today was the day it chose to reveal itself, even if he didn’t realise.
His gaze had been taking in the scenery when he saw her. Taking in every bar, every restaurant. Coffee shops. Rick Grimes had forgotten how normal life could be, having spent the past few years fighting for survival with his bare hands and teeth, and the occasional red machete. Or at least, he thought it was normal until the flash of a smile caught his eye. He knew that smile. Didn’t he? No, it couldn’t. Head shook, almost as though attempting to shake the thoughts straight outta his head before looking over again. She was still there. ‘Judith?’ The name left his lips, no louder than a whisper and feet began to move towards the girl despite his reservations. Judith had been so young when Rick last saw her. So young and yet, he would recognise that face anywhere. Call it father’s intuition. ‘Judith?’ This time, it came out louder, addressing her direct rather than himself.

daryl attempted a smirk but it didn’t really reach his features, it was obvious that the action had been forced. “no one does. don’t get it. why they ain’t out lookin’ for answers.” he had tried in a sense but he hadn’t gotten very far, the city had a strange pull and although he knew how much he wanted to leave he could never bring himself to do it. all just added to his frustrations. it wasn’t as if he wanted to return home as such, no one really wanted to go back to that given the option but he wasn’t keen on leaving people behind either. not with the shit storm, they were facing, they needed him and he was trapped here. “yeah she is.” nodding at the mention of maggie as a slight smile appeared on his features before it dropped again. “she’s alright too. we all are.” figuring it might be something that he was worried about after all that time. “got a cabin, kinda’ cramped but you should come.” daryl would sleep outside if it meant rick had a place to stay, it wasn’t like he particularly cared about all that. he’d lived in the woods for years without a fancy bed, he wasn’t about to start depending on one now.
his arms locked around rick and he was aware then that he didn’t want to let go. daryl dixon knew there was a lot in the world he could live without but rick grimes was not one of them. once he’d made eye contact with rick on the bridge he knew that was it, that they weren’t going to be able to pull some rescue mission off this time. the herd had been too much but it wouldn’t have stopped them trying and losing even more people. he knew he’d made the right decision but it hadn’t been easy to accept. “i know.” daryl had been secretly angry at rick for a long time – angry because he was gone, angry because of the way it made him feel and damn angry that he’d let it happen in the first place. “shouldnt’ve let ya’ off.” it had been rick’s decision but daryl should have fought harder or at least that’s what he told himself. hearing him he nodded against his friend’s shoulder. “think i could lose you? any of us could?” at this point he wasn’t even aware of how long they’d been stood in that embrace but he was content, for the first time in a long time he was content.
‘Maybe they don’t wanna find answers,’ Rick mused in a thoughtful manner. The thought certainly crossed his mind. Don’t get him wrong, he’s suspicious. This place, it was peaceful. Too peaceful. Something or someone must’a brought them here, but was that necessarily a bad thing? The air was fresh. The food didn’t taste like shit. Nobody had tried to kill him in the last forty-eight hours. Compared to the world they’d come from, this place was a damn heaven. Even he was tempted not to go digging outta fear it would break the illusion. ‘I can handle cramped.’ Especially when cramped came with a side order of Daryl Dixon. No doubt both of them had hung out in worse conditions.
A second apology was whispered into the other’s shoulder. ‘M sorry.’ Rick knew he wasn’t the only one to lose people. They all had. Over the years, they’d built a family and that family seemed to get smaller, and smaller, no matter how hard they kept fighting. Carl, Glenn, Beth. Sophia. Everyone. He wasn’t the only person who lost them. But Rick still didn’t regret his decision to add his name to the list. ‘Y’didn’t need me anymore.’ Hand moved back to Daryl’s shoulder and he pulled away enough to look at him. Back then, it had felt like they’d outgrown him. Maybe even that they didn’t trust in him or his leadership. ‘I did what I had to do. You would’a done the same.’ They looked out for their own. Looked out for each other. A long pause lingered between them then, Rick taking a moment to really take in his friend, really appreciate that Daryl was there. Thought over his previous words too. Head cocked to one side then in curious realisation. ‘You said all. There’s more of us?’
igcttabe:
daryl still found it hard to remove his eyes from his friend, he didn’t want to make it into something but it was so good to finally have him back. when rick left he took a piece of daryl with him, it wasn’t like he was throwing blame around because he knew it wasn’t like that. however, this was the first time in years he felt fully himself. his eyes flicked to their target as he stayed at rick’s side, shrugging his shoulders lazily because he didn’t care if his person lived or died. why would he? the fight with the saviours pushed his buttons enough but now there was alpha and her people? yeah, he was over it. “prick had his chance to say somethin’.” it was just lucky that daryl hadn’t been the one with the gun because this guy would be missing a knee cap already. “the hell’s he doin’ out so far anyway’s?” turning to give rick his full attention, it wasn’t as if their target was going to do anything… he didn’t look that stupid. “crazier shit’s happened.” when he asked if he couldn’t talk if he was dead.

Gaze travelled from Daryl to their captive, back to Daryl and then straight back to their captive. It was difficult to focus on just one. Rick Grimes very rarely let his guard down, but since waking up on unfamiliar territory? Those barriers were higher than ever. He just couldn’t take the risk. Making a quick decision, he stepped forward and knocked the other guy out with the back of his gun. There. Much better. It gave him a chance to think and them a chance to talk. Attention turned back to his friend, his partner, with a soft sigh. ‘He’ll talk when he wakes up.’ Better that than a corpse, something Daryl seemed more comfortable than usual about and it hadn’t gone unnoticed. ‘There somethin’ you’re not telling me? Who is this asshole?’ He didn’t look like a Savior. Not one that Rick had met anyway.

“trust me. i waved goodbye to perfect a long time ago. i’d settle for normal. plain, boring, normal.” anything that wasn’t the nightmare of living in rosewood and her past. aria knew she should probably want more for herself and maybe deep down somewhere she did but that was buried and locked away somewhere she couldn’t find it. “you sound like someone who’s lost a lot?” realising how that may have sounded she was very quick to add. “i mean no offence.” she hadn’t meant for it to come out the way that it had. “takes one to know one. right?” shrugging softly as she glanced to him with a brief smile. her smiles didn’t last these days, no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t seem to get them to stick.
@shrffrckgrms continued from here
Brows raised, taking a silent moment to consider those three little words. Plain. Boring. Normal. Rick couldn’t remember the last time he’d experienced any of those. Did they even exist anymore? He would’ve said no months ago, but now he was here and here was starting to make him wonder. Maybe it was still possible. Or maybe being here was just the calm before the storm. The latter option seemed more likely. ‘Sounds much better than perfect,’ the male eventually hummed. His gaze dropped at that next question. Lost a lot sounded like an understatement. These past few years, all Rick ever seemed to do was lose people. Shane, Lori. Hershel. Beth, Glenn. Abraham. Carl. So many more. The list went on and on. ‘I’ve seen a few things.’ Looking up, he offered a faint smile. ‘You too, huh?’
igcttabe:
daryl found himself nodding to rick’s question but the truth was he had no idea what this place was supposed to be. “know as much as you do.” he had been here a lot longer, it had been months for him but nobody knew anything. there were people who had been sat here cosy for years and knew as much as he did it. it was absolute bull shit but if it meant that they could have the people they lost back? rick, beth, enid. then maybe it would be worth it. back home this was exactly what they’d been trying to achieve… a better place. “just woke up here,” shaking his head slightly because he knew how it sounded. “starter searchin’ for our people. found a couple of ‘em too. maggie, the baby, enid… few of us now.” wanting to try and update rick without completely overwhelming him which was why he’d left out the people who were supposed to be dead. although was rick supposed to be one of those people too? he’d presumed so but he was here and that was enough. it always was.
not finding him had felt like he was letting him down, letting them all down but it was carol that gave him he shove he needed. just like she always did. daryl had gotten what he had to say out there just so rick knew, he wouldn’t drag out the point but rick needed to know that much. that he’d looked until he couldn’t any more. hearing rick say his name firmer he stopped figuring he’d said everything he needed too anyways. the breath he took in next shook which was how he knew he was losing grip on his emotions, even though he was trying his hardest to keep them out of his facial expressions. his eyes darted to the hand that was on his shoulder as his eyes flicked from it and back to rick who was still stood there. he wasn’t gone. “got no idea how good it is to see you.” finally dipping his head to hide his tears as he broke the distance between them, bringing his face to dig into his friend’s shoulder. “ain’t right without you.” his voice muffled as his arm wrapped around rick’s shoulders. “never is.”
‘Yeah? ‘Cause I don’t know shit,’ Rick murmured with a low, albeit slightly nervous, chuckle. It was stupid really. To be nervous. A quiet voice in the back of his mind is telling him to get a grip, to take advantage of such an opportunity. There were no Walkers here. None that he’d seen. There were shops, supplies. People. This was the closest thing to normal Rick had experienced in a long, long time. It was the kind of place Carl had envisioned for them, but still, he couldn’t shake the suspicious paranoia that often clouded his judgement. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real, or maybe he just wouldn’t allow himself to believe it. Not yet. ‘Maggie’s here?’ Words were breathed out in genuine happiness. Not just because Maggie was here, but because Maggie was safe. Her baby was safe. Daryl was safe.
Hand squeezed shoulder a little tighter before Rick stepped into the embrace, both his arms wrapping tight around the other male. He did know. He knew because that’s how it felt to see Daryl again too. That day on the bridge, when their eyes met, that had been goodbye. Or at least, it was supposed to be. The thought of leaving those people behind, that had hurt more than any pike through the gut could. ‘’M sorry.’ Apology was murmured into his friend’s shoulder. ‘I had to.’ There was no other way. The herd was too big, even for a group as strong as his. ‘I couldn’t lose you too. Couldn’t lose anyone. Not after Carl.’ His son’s death had been the last death. Rick had refused to let another happen.
thexpurehearts:
“Y-y-yea Sebastian says that.” Leslie said as he picked at his hair, eyes cast down. “But…it’s hard. Hard hard hard. Always bad.” He sniffled.
‘Sebastian?’ Name was repeated in a curious manner. Rick hadn’t been here long. He wasn’t even sure where here was, let alone who the people were. He’d use any opportunity possible to find out more information. Anything to help him understand. At the same point, however, he wouldn’t put that curiosity in front of his morals. The person he was speaking to seemed upset and that was far more important, especially since being reunited with his position as sheriff. ‘It’s true. Hope is hard.’ Agreement came in a quiet murmur. ‘But.. most things in life worth having are.’ Head tilted to one side. ‘It can be good sometimes too.’
‘ when something seems to perfect , it’s usually anything but . ’ from aria
He couldn’t argue there, but then, that was probably because Rick Grimes had stopped believing in perfect a long time ago. Hope, maybe, but never perfection. Not anymore. The world was too goddamn flawed. So many times he thought he’d found the right place, the perfect place, only for chaos and destruction to later crush that dream. Believing in perfect only ever seemed to lead to disappointment. Aria was smart to have doubts and he wouldn’t discourage that. ‘Nothin’ in life is ever perfect. Y’just learn to enjoy what you have when you have it.’ His shoulders shrugged. ‘That’s all we can do.’
‘ how about we ask him after we kill him ? ’ from Daryl
One blink, two blinks. Three blinks. Rick didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh. Something about this scene was so damn familiar, despite their current surroundings. It was a relief to know some things never changed. That Daryl Dixon never changed. ‘I’m not ruling it out as an option, but it might defeat the object a little,’ the male drawled, trusted gun still aimed and pointed at their target despite giving his friend full attention. They’d danced this dance before that it was almost routine to them now, which probably should concern him, but not right this second. ‘Can’t talk if he’s dead.’ Another blink. ‘Can he?’ In his experience, the dead only grunted, but things were different here. For all he knew, the game might’a changed.

igcttabe:
daryl was practically rocking on his heels, debating whether to break the distance between them or not. it still felt too good to be true, he had spent years walking in search of rick and had found jack squat. there had been no sign of his body and that alone drove daryl crazy. the fact he couldn’t bring him home to michonne. to judith. to his people. he took in a sharp intake of breath when rick spoke in his usual accent, he wasn’t sure why he was expecting him to sound different. perhaps he was just picking holes at the situation because he figured this was some trick, his brain giving him what he wanted which was total bull if it wasn’t real. “last time i checked you were gone.” his tone almost defensive and not even at rick as such but at what had happened and how it happened. the fact he hadn’t been able to do anything to stop. be safe, that’s what he told him. be damn safe. daryl didn’t have to answer because rick had already started proving it to him by sharing something not many other people would know. it wasn’t like there were many people left from those days. “was one time.” he muttered almost under his breath as he shook his head at him although it was clear his features had softened at the realisation that this was him.
daryl found his head dipping, knowing that he needed to get his explanation in before rick could start. “went lookin’ for you man, after what happened out on the bridge.” his voice hoarse as he shook his head slightly. “never found you though. found shit out there. didn’t stop though. not till i had too.” a brief pause as he took a step forward, still hesitant to touch him in case that caused him to disappear again. “wanted you to know that.”
Both of them appeared to be doubting what was right in front of them and that was understandable. Nothing was ever what it seemed. Not in their world at least. Rick hadn’t been in this new world long, but he was willing to bet it weren’t that damn different here either. Doubt aside though, there was a much stronger instinct within telling him that he could trust this. It was an instinct that had been there, right from the start and it had never let him down before. Not when Daryl Dixon was involved at least. ‘Yeah. Yeah, I was. But that was Alexandria. This is.. Washington?’ Statement became a question, confused eyes once again taking in their surroundings before returning back to what was more important. Smile stayed on tired features and amusement replaced confusion at that last comment. There it was. Confirmation. Proof that this wasn’t a figment of his overactive (and sometimes questionable) imagination.
That amusement didn’t last long. Brows quickly drew together as his friend began to explain and he tried to interrupt. ‘Daryl,’ Rick spoke in a quiet voice, though attempts seemed futile. The other had something to say and he was gonna say it. Breathing in, hands moved to rest on hips and he simply listened. He should’a known his actions would have consequences. That his family would never just let him go down like that. Part of him did too, but it hadn’t been enough to stop him. Better they live like that than not live at all. ‘Daryl.’ Name was repeated in a firmer tone and this time, he stepped forward, reaching out to grip the tracker’s shoulder in a gentle, reassuring squeeze. ‘I’m here now. Alright? You found me now.’ That’s what mattered, even if they had found each other in strange circumstances. Well, stranger than their previous circumstances. ‘I know that. I know you.’ Stubborn right ‘till the end, he means.
