Introduction 6: Equipment

Regardless of when you or your classmates made it to the Hotel, everyone eventually found themself at the check-in desk there. Upon arrival, they would come face-to-face with what seemed to be a computer screen run by an advanced AI.

As each student arrived, it greeted them by name and talent, a robotic arm handing them a key to their room, as well as a small touch-screen PDA, and informing them of their room assignment.

The PDA, as described, would serve as a tool for students to use. They could take notes on it, a helpful way to keep track of any critiques they may have for the city, they could view their classmates’ profiles on it as a way to get to know the class they will be spending the next four years of school with, and they could view maps on it to make sure they never get lost in the city. It even allows students to keep track of their casino credits, and it can be scanned to pay for purchases or food (on the Academy’s bill, no less!). Truly, it would serve as a useful device during the stay.

Introduction 5: FAQ

As the tour concluded, the robot hovered in front of the group, ensuring everyone was still present before continuing.

“We ask that you adhere to some simple rules during your stay here, for your safety and the integrity of the city:

-Do not attempt to cross over to the opposite tower in the hotel on a higher floor

-Do not break or steal anything in the city

-Please treat your classmates with respect, do not fight

-Do not attempt to enter locked areas, or areas under construction

-Try to maintain a reasonable curfew

-Have fun!.

This concludes your tour of Akedo City. As your guide, I will be at the entrance plaza to take any questions you may have. I will also note that many of the services in the city will be available to you, free of charge, as your tablets you will receive from the Hotel desk will serve as “gift cards” for you. This includes meals at any of our restaurants or cafes. If you are unsure whether or not something is free of charge, please direct your question to the appropriate representative. For your amusement, you will each be given 100 credits to use in the casino, more will be given out during your stay! Unfortunately, as we have not gotten a cell tower online yet, the nature of our dome will disrupt all cell phone connections during your stay here. Emergency phone calls may be made through an appropriate representative. Please enjoy your stay.”

With that, the small bot hovered off down the street, leaving the array of students to their own devices.

Introduction 4: Tutorial Phase

Your vision quickly adjusts after the bright flash fades away, and hovering before the class is a metallic shape. It looks almost like a cross between a UFO and a Space Invader, and the imprinted face earlier on the dome walls sits before you on the screen of a little drone.

It hovers past each of the students, as if it was getting a brief scan of them before resuming its position front-and-center. Finally, it spoke up in a chipper voice, one that was clearly manufactured by computer. In addition, a small holographic display appeared beneath the drone, showing a screen that typed out its dialogue, captioning every word that it spoke.

“Greetings, 84th Class, and welcome to Akedo City: The City of Lights and Hope for the Future! I am Monomi~, and I will serve as your guide within this marvel of engineering genius. Your tour will begin shortly, so please gather miscellaneous items, and follow me in an orderly fashion..”

With a small rev of its drone-like engines, it hovered higher into the air, ensuring that all students could see it. Or perhaps, so it could more clearly see when students strayed from the pack. Some students exchanged glances, but ultimately no one seemed willing to simply wander off by themselves.

“This tour will briefly explain all open areas of the city. This will allow you to know what will be available to you during your stay here. Following the tour, you will be dismissed to get settled into your rooms, and then you will be free to enjoy the city until our celebratory banquet tonight~!.”

The drone began to hover away from the Plaza and down the road, maintaining an easy-to-follow pace for the entirety of the class.

“If you look to your left, you will see our Blue District.This will be the residential area that you will be staying in during your time here. All of your rooms will be in the luxurious Hotel, which has an included public bath and unlimited access to our state-of-the-art Gymnasium and swimming area, along with our glamorous ballroom, restaurant, and lounge~. You will be assigned a room during your stay. The belongings you packed beforehand have already been sent to your room, and you are free to arrange it as you see fit. Room assignments are processing, you will be informed of them upon entry into the Hotel.”

With a victorious and optimistic chime, the bot floated onward, slowing once more at their next stop.

“These buildings to your left are a part of our Red District, reserved for administration buildings. The Police Station, as well as important offices for administration, can be found here. These buildings are going to remain locked for your time here, as they are under construction and will only be needed when the city has been officially opened to the public.”

“Next, on the left, you will see our Purple District, reserved for our impressive mega-mall! This mall will see expansion in the future, but for now its repertoire includes a high-end gourmet restaurant, clothing stores stocked partially by the very fashionable talents of the 81st class, a game store, a multi-use theater complex, and a convenience store for any and all of your shopping needs.”

The bot hovered onward, bringing the class to the next location, further down the central curved road.

“Now, to your left again you will see our Green District~. This is our downtown, and if the megaplex mall is too flashy for you, then the small and cozy shops here will be just what you need! The buildings available here include a jewelry store, stocked by our very own SHSL Jeweler, a clothing store for those of you with more refined taste, a cafe to unwind in, a salon to upgrade your style, and a museum filled to the brim with work from some of the Academy’s finest artists and thinkers from years past.”

The bot spun around in place, emitting beeps in a fanfare-eqsue tune, before presenting them with the impressive facade of the Casino building.

“Finally, to your right, is the centerpiece to the entire city, the Yellow District, reserved for our state-of-the-art casino and gaming megaplex! Every floor of this building houses the next-level of entertainment, a buffet restaurant, entertaining casino games to try your luck with, arcade games for some casual or competitive play, a bowling alley, laser tag, and a project in the works for a tournament arena for professional gamers. That arena will also, unfortunately, remain closed off for construction during your stay here, but all other areas of the casino will be open and fully operational.”

Introduction 3: Loading Complete

The darkness of the tunnel is occasionally interrupted by a fluorescent light shooting past the window. As you swiftly traverse toward what you can only imagine is a marvel of engineering, if the written description was anything to go by, the lights serve as an indication of how long this tunnel is, and how quickly you’re moving through it.

Minutes go by, and then what feels like an hour.

Just as your eyes begin to adjust to the near-darkness, your senses suddenly become flooded with bright, unavoidable lights. The train sails through the other end of the tunnel, and through the windows you can see dozens of gigantic, complex buildings, all adorned with countless neon lights. Looking up, the surrogate sky within the dome appears to be set to nighttime by default, as a black backdrop gives the illusion of space. The wonder of this city and its impressive appearance lay in the knowledge that it was envisioned and carried out by high school students, no more than a few years ahead of yourself.

The train began to slow as it circled the outskirts of the city and drew nearer to its stopping point. Though many of the neon signs that marked the buildings were obscured or simply passed by too quickly to be read, a few of them could still be read as the train lurched past. “Casino,” “Admin,” “Mall,” “Hotel,” perhaps some names were still up for debate with the 81st class. Other buildings, such as “Akedo City Jewels,” “Blackbird Boutique,” and “1-up Cafe” zoomed in and out of view and left you to wonder just how many places there would be to explore during the week. By the looks of things, there was enough to keep you and the rest of the class busy.

You, and the rest of your new classmates, filed off of the transit once it reached its stopping point: a small plaza near the rails,with a welcoming set of benches and an arch erected over the street that led out that read in bright neon lettering: ‘Akedo City’. Based on the excited tone of the introduction letter, most students would have expected some sort of exuberant welcome party complete with balloons, food, confetti, and a group of cheering Seniors. What they were met with, however, was a silent, empty city. The only sounds to be heard were the buzzing and humming of the surrounding neon lights and the distant chimes of various arcade games.

Hauntingly empty, and beautiful at the same time.

With the moment of respite, taking in the wonders surrounding you seemed like something that could be savored so very shortly. And to think, this entire city is reinforced underground…

BEEP

The sudden shrill siren takes you off guard after minutes of interruption, with a number of your fellow classmates jumping at the sound. A real showstopping prank, probably by the seniors, you think to yourself. Shortly afterwards, an automated voice echoes through the hollow reverb of the darkness…

The sounds bouncing off metal made your clear on your surroundings. What otherwise would be coined as illuminating metal spires disappearing into the twinkling night sky with that seemingly endless dome overhead. Squinting, you can just barely make out the pixels of the stars meeting the shortest spires of your walled enclosure.

‘Arrival of guests at drop-off Plaza. Failure to continue manual introductions in timely manner. Else if condition met; initializing greeter Monomi.’

Before you could grasp the strange automated lines of command, a bright flash on the sky-dome projection stops you mid-thought.

Introduction 2: Welcome to Akedo City

With a gentle bump to your seat, the flip back to the front of the pamphlet, the glossy cover catching your gaze.

You quickly finish admiring the official seal, continuing to flip through the pages until an energetic title catches your eye.

‘AKEDO CITY’

Saturated colors and bright print colored the page, an unseemly shift from the dignified appearance of the rest of your documents. Its chipper, enthusiastic tone seems like an additional stamped on side-note, contrasting the former posh description of your soon-to-be school.

It is your ‘Introduction Seminar,’ as it was described. A recent addition to the curriculum of incoming freshman, with each incoming class experiencing something completely new. In that matter, it contrasts the well-defined and assured definitions of Kibogamine Academy; very little being spoken of it other than a promising first experience. If nothing else, the unknown is an exciting divergence, and knowing that it has been prepared by none other than the illustrious school of your future begets nothing but hope from you.

This Akedo City has some very high expectations from you.

Well, first things first, congratulations incoming Kibogamine students! It’s a pretty big feat to be accepted into an exemplary institution like Kibogamine Academy, having to be real super at something and all. I would know after all, haha!

So, you’re probably asking yourself what’s the deal with this boring-schmoring opening seminar? You’re supposed to be at the school going through the drab motions of recitation yet you’re dragged out as part of some off site symposium? What’s the deal?

Well, lucky freshman, we have something quite unexpected in store for you that promises to wipe that skeptical grimace right off those cheeks. We, the graduating class of Kibogamine Academy have been working on something really spectacular, something that’ll blow your socks clean off on sight. A metropolitan wonder that comes with all the technological innovations thought to be years off into the future. The 81st class of Kibogamine Academy presents to you…

Cool name, right? ‘Think tank’-chan came up with the header. So, what’s Akedo City, and what’s so great about it, you ask? Well, for starters, the entirety of Akedo City is self-sufficient. Everything, from amenities to energy to travel is entirely automated and catering to our guests; innovation only possible with the efforts of the greatest students of the country! You’re welcome~. (･ω<)☆

Upon entry, you’ll notice the innovations immediately, with automated service for everything. Robot butlers are chic, you know? From the modern to the previously unconceived, technology will be up to your ears and you’ll love every moment of it. Oh and yeah, ‘think tank’-chan thinks I should include a more academic description.

Akedo City is an upcoming project by Kibogamine students, set to release within the coming decade. An entirely self-sufficient city running entirely on green energy, the city itself has been reinforced against potential natural disasters to withstand catastrophe, ranging from high magnitude earthquakes to level 8 tsunamis. Technology and amenities in place are of a premium, affording luxury to those even with the more refined tastes, and climate control within the hermetically-sealed dome ensures optimal weather in any season. With this innovation of independent energy consumption and advanced fortification, coupled with its cutting-edge definitions of entertainment and luxury, the city stands as a model to revolutionize the standard of living, paving way for a plethora of utopias across the globe.

Fine and dandy, right? Your feedback following this little adventure will be greatly appreciated, and will be taken into consideration to improve the city before its official debut to the public. Give us a good ‘ol five stars, and I’ll give you a kiss myself. Haha!

-81st Class of Kibogamine Academy

Reading through the contents, another jolt breaks your focus, as you upturn with the sound of the speakers through the bus. You can see it; a large obsidian dome, bigger than any structure you’ve seen in person. Now that you think about it, this was the structure that was all over the news, with Kibogamine keeping the project under wraps. There’s been a lot of gossip over what could lay underneath, but now that you’re gonna see it up close and personal, you can’t help but feel excited.

The robotic voice booms cycles through the speakers once more, and the daylight quickly cuts out as you enter through a tunnel.

“Now approaching Dome Alpha”

Immaculate. Prestigious. Unparalleled. Innovative. The pinnacle of hope for the nation. These are words that come to mind at the mention of Kibogamine Academy; the pride and joy of the nation’s upcoming leaders and thinkers. An exclusive, government-sanctioned school that hosts only the most promising of students, the academy bolster’s a title of preeminent standing even among exclusive institutions nationwide, promising graduating students a lifelong success in their future endeavors. Indeed, most of the country’s leaders in all fields are alumni of this very school. Though, how would one join into such an academy to guarantee their promising future?

Enrollment into the school is rather unorthodox compared to potential counterparts. Firstly, students must be of highschool standing, attending a highschool within the country. Secondly, Kibogamine Academy does not hold entrance exams, nor accept just any applicant. In fact, the school sends out recruiters and scouts to locate those students with extraordinary abilities. Youth whose abilities and skills are exceptionally individualistic in their capabilities. Studies in mathematics, history, the fine arts, and beyond are recruited with their display of talents beyond any measure.

Accommodations and amenities are of the highest grade, and all living expenses of students are covered…

Flipping through the pamphlet, your eyes continue to scan the printed text distractedly. Endless praise and good words for that praise continue to jump at you, line by line. One thing was certainly clear; Kibogamine Academy was the crème de la crème of schools.

But of course you already know that. The details of the ‘Nation’s Greatest Institution’ and all the finer details of the school are fresh in your mind. You’ve heard about it and all the fillings, in and out, back and front, and all the wonderful things you’ll achieve from attending such a place.

You’ve been accepted as a Kibogamine student, after all.

Katsuo was seemingly minding his own business (for once-), walking around, and probably looking for a new target to pickpocket from. If anyone had spotted him, he looked less like a Hope’s Peak Student, and more like a bashed up orphan asking for money on people’s doorsteps. The tooth and height kind of kept his age a secret…to most, at least.

But besides this seemingly normal day, the birds tweeting, sun shining, and the cash he just stole from an old lady glistening in his hand, a stranger appeared! A weird looking stranger at that, who seemed…interested in who he was? Katsuo rose an eyebrow immediately, and felt like a gimmick was about to unfold, but instead of simply moving along straight of the bat, he was going to milk as much attention and ego he could from this poor, unsuspecting trickster.

“Gee pal, do you just walk up to random kids on the street and gawk like that? You’re gonna get arrested one day, dont’cha know? In fact, how do you not know I’m just some poor child you caught up in a scheme? Ever think about it pal?”

Waiting for a reply, a smirk arose on his face.

Time to play the game!

Eh? What was this kid playing at, and better yet, was was there a five-year old with a weird cat waltzing around a high school campus? No one would arrest a fan for admiring a ‘star’... would they?

Shozo quickly dropped his perky facade, now worried in the back of his mind that he was about to get caught up in some sort of undercover cop bust, or worse, a reality prank show.

“Yeesh, sorry kiddo. Guess I thought you were someone else and not, y’know, a toddler. I’on’t want any trouble, now but, uh, are you lost or somethin’? You’ve got a good ten years to go before you could end up here.”

Shozo paused for a moment. He really had no clue what to do. What if this really was some lost kid? He remembered once when his little sister got lost in a supermarket and how scared she and his mom were, so what if this boy had some parent going through the same thing?

“...Y’need help finding yer mom or somethin’? I could show you and yer cat the way to the lost and found...”
