Some outtakes here from a recent shoot for UJA in Brooklyn. Park Slope Jewish Center held a wonderful celebration for Yom Haatzmaut this past Sunday and they went all out! Moonbounce, face painting, spa treatments--you name it. There were so many adorable kids there, I had a hard time photographing anything else! These are just a sample of some of the cute faces I captured.
Since it was a snowy day here in NYC, I found myself fantasizing about warmer, sunnier days. I found this image from a weekend away a couple months back where we stayed at this amazing house up in the Hudson Valley. The entire property was so enchanting and littered with barns, as well as a reservoir, a grain silo and creek. I wouldn't mind camping out there again.
OKAY: my new website is almost done! After many months of slaving over this project I am so excited to have a new place to showcase my work. The site is almost ready to launch (shulamitphotography.com), and I wanted to post a little preview here!
New Year=New Site, thats my motto :)
In honor of the last night of Chanukah, I wanted to share a few images from a really fun shoot I did a few weeks back with my friends at Gefilteria! Jeff and Liz had this great idea to do a listicle in honor of the holiday and we created a scene to photograph for each night. I'm sharing a few of the images above. Check out the whole story here! Happy Chanukah!
Just a few outtakes from a recent family portrait shoot here that I love.
My good gal pal Emily is embarking on some exciting new professional horizons, so we took a headshot to usher in this new chapter and send her off on her way! It was a chilly Fall day here in Brooklyn, but Em handled it like a champ. Love her.

I was in Israel for Sukkot a few weeks back visiting my brother and boy, what a scene we encountered! Machane Yehuda, the shuk, or open air marketplace in the middle of Jerusalem, was the focal point of preparations for the harvest festival of Sukkot--which happens to be my favorite holiday. My family headed over the day before the start of the holiday to stock up on the four species needed to fulfill the commandments of the holiday. The shuk was teeming with vendors each with their own speciality, while Jews of all stripes crowded around to find the absolute best quality and deal possible.
It was truly a feast for the eyes--I am including some images here of the scene.
I wanted to share some of my images from the most recent Creative Time installation entitled, Funk, God, Jazz, and Medicine: Black Radical Brooklyn, which just closed last month. It was so amazing, with four site specific installations in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. There was incredible original art, workshops, and performances, with the Weeksville Heritage Center being used as a focal point for the month-long exhibition. Check out more images along with info about the project here!
I just finished editing these images from a wedding I photographed In July over in Coronado, CA. What a beautiful place! The groom is from San Diego originally and the couple decided on this adorable beach town as the perfect spot for their wedding. It was a spectacular day and I was so glad to be a part of the event and capture this special day for these two lovebirds :)
Last week I photographed a special dinner put on by the folks at the Jewish food purveyor, Gefilteria! Co-sponsored by the Clinton Hill speciality food shop Peck's, they brought together amazing food and presented it beautifully in their outdoor dining space.
There were some menu items I had never tasted before--including pickled watermelon rinds! Check out the image above of Gefilteria founder Jeffrey Yoskowitz holding a jar of these tangy delicious foodstuffs :)
I taught my photography workshop here at BCI how to use a vintage Polaroid camera yesterday and then sent them out to make their own B&W prints! Excited by this retro process, they conceived of and made some very cool images. I managed to snag an image of a couple, shown above.
So I have to admit, I've been a little out of commission for the last few weeks--but for good reason! I am back at BCI this Summer for my third year as an artist in residence teaching photography. So far, so good! My students are great: fun, energetic and enthusiastic about learning. Its also been great being back here in California and at the Brandeis-Bardin Campus, which is such a beautiful piece of land. The other day I took a little walk around the horse barn after I was done teaching and just marveled at the captivating and crumbling landscape around me. I am posting a few of the images I captured here.
Creative Time, one of the most innovative public art organizations here in NYC, recently commissioned this amazing and poignant project created by Kara Walker, an artist I have admired for a long long while. Her new work is comprised of sculpture made entirely of sugar and other sugar based products and is housed in the former Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg. The centerpiece is an enormous lady sphinx made of over 40 tons of sugar accented by smaller sculptures made of molasses depicting young boys carrying large baskets, looking as though they are ready to harvest cane sugar.
All of the work makes historical reference to the Caribbean slave trade and its linkage of African slaves with the sugar industry. A recent NPR interview with Kara Walker illuminates both the backstory her process and can be heard here.
Creative Time hired me to photograph the installation for them with a particular emphasis on documenting the way visitors interacted with the art. It was really impactful to see both the tremendous scale of the warehouse space in relation to the sphinx as well as the visitors with the molasses sculptures. I really enjoyed watching people 'gram the sculptures and take selfies with the sphinx. I'm including a few images here--and if you are in New York, make sure to catch the show before it closes July 6th!
Ok, so here's the deal. One of my best gals, Judy Nelson, has been connecting me to some awesome furniture Italian furniture companies that have been hiring me to photograph their events in connection with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair held here in NYC recently. There have been some notable perks, such as seeing some really innovative and fantastically cool furniture that I would personally love to own one day. However, I would be remiss if I did not brag about getting to meet and photograph a true icon, Marina Abramovic. Here she is smiling up a storm with Patrizia Moroso on the upper left. What an honor. I owe you like the biggest glass of lambrusco for that one, Judy.
Its a busy time over here at SP Headquarters--but never too busy to photograph adorable Jewish children! The other day, SAR Academy had a really fantastic celebration for Yom Ha'Atzmaut with a ton of BBQ and the most watermelon I have ever seen in one place. Seriously. I zoomed over there after a morning of taking headshots at Birthright Israel Foundation followed by teaching at the JCC in Manhattan. Just another day, haha!
I was tasked with documenting the event for the school's new brochure and I got to work photographing all the activities and families present. Sharing a couple images of a few particularly precious independence lovers here :)
