thinking about how simon’s episode begins with the confession that, when asked, he was unable to choose his mother over the abusive father whom he hated, an event which he recalls as an exemplary moment of cowardice. and then for the remainder of the episode he finds himself in situations where he is repeatedly asked to pick between ralph and jack, who perpetuates his own cycle of abuse by becoming the abuser (and thus represents simon’s father in this conflict) and has already aggressively expressed displeasure over simon not being adequately loyal to him in his eyes. and over and over simon finds the strength to confront jack and align himself with ralph instead, which from his perspective is a display of him overcoming his “cowardice” and thus breaking the abusive cycle—instances after which simon proclaims that the island is where he has been the happiest. only for ralph and piggy to discredit his opinions and tell him to be quiet and use the same insults jack uses against him anyway, all of which directly lead to his horrific death. i’m ill 👍
