actually fucking insane that badgerfang dying horribly on the battlefield and the other kits praising his death as a great honour was only used to show that ‘brokenstar is so evil and the kits are innocent little babies!’ and not to show how horrific the effects of extreme patriotism can be on youth in times of war. how scary it is to tell your child that dying for the state is more honourable than living a fulfilling life.

I have mixed feelings on Raggedstar, I think he's a pretty decent abuser character who manipulates Yellowfang in realistic ways and you can clearly see how he would think he's in the right and a victim without agreeing with any of that but also Yellowfang's Secret is a book for kids, they should have made it a bit more clear that what he's doing is wrong so the kids at home can see and understand these abusive tactics as bad and be able to recognize them if they're done to them in real life and not think that they're okay to do to someone. I honestly kind of like him as an antagonistic/morally wrong character even if a lot of his relationship with Yellowfang was very rushed and could have been handled better but there's a lesser version of the issue with Spottedleaf's Heart where the POV character mostly thinks that this is all fine (it's realistic for an abuse victim to think that) and then the narrative and other characters don't do enough to make it clear to the young impressionable kids at home that that's not right. Even just someone (Rowanberry maybe?) trying to warn Yellowfang and her getting defensive and shoving them away and rationalizing Raggedstar's behavior in her head would have gone a long way.

the concept of firestar losing the life brindleface gave him in the foxtrap is so dear to me. I like all the lives lost having meaning if possible. brindleface gave him a life for a mothers love. ashfur has a hand in this death and i would love to know what he thought if he knew that he was taking away a life his mother gave… polluting her final legacy, which was love for HIM. and ofc hawkfrost more directly caused it to further tigerstar’s schemes… more themes of children and their parents (their parents who are tigerstar who took brindleface’s life in the first place). and brambleclaw is there too but i don’t care about that

i kinda dipped my toes into this on twitter but the way brambleclaw is characterized in the new (prophecy) graphic novels is so sanded down from how he behaves in the original that i have to giggle a bit. like wdym he barely mentions/monologues about everyone judging him for being tigerkin until, like, the traveling cats get to the tribe??

he's written like a severe over-correction for the criticism his characterization has been under but the tradeoff for him just being. a guy is not interesting enough i think for the introductory protagonist. the first arc of retellings was able to do firestar decently enough so what's with the hard pivot of all of brambleclaw's antagonist traits? is it too make the dark forest training and po3 stuff reflect better on him if we remove the context of his previous intentions? because i think that made him more engaging, even if the actually writing collapses under the moments the erins wanted for the audience to sympathize with him.

at the very least, it's cathartic to see characters like squirrelpaw existing outside of the very limited POV scope of "starclan i find her annoying so i hope something bad happens to here" that is The Brambleclaw POV™ standard. weird that like eight different male povs do this throughout the main series but that's neither here nor there
