Okay so I’m not doing Inktober since I can’t actually do line art for shit but in light of Merlin being 10 YEARS OLD (dude I remember watching the first episode when it aired as a kid and knowing it was going to be a ride) I’d show my soft side for side characters!

I did mean to draw all the knights of the round table (which is why Gwaine’s pose is kinda weird) but,,, I didn’t,,, do that.

Imma start from the beginning, it’s a long one. 1st, initial attraction/wooing:

Season 3 Episode 4:- 1st subtexts always romantic setup: we meet Gwaine (who shows immediate and concentrated interest in Merlin) directly after Arthur is shocked and awed that anyone would have romantic interest in Merlin- Gwaine waltzes in as the suave knight in shining armor and risks life and limb for two babes he’s never met- Gwaine takes time out in the middle of this outnumbered fight to introduce himself and flirt with Merlin- Gwaine wakes up - “what am i doing in this bed” ;))) it’s just a gay line ok- Honestly that whole scene in the bed with Gwaine flirting and stretching out shirtless??- Walking home drunk to a single bed and sharing deep dark backstory secrets is straight out of fanfic- Me. “Is there a problem here” protective Gwaine - Jokes about being in danger + Merlin being worried + Gwaine reassuring him like a good boyfriend

Season 3 Episode 8:- Immediate arm around Merlin when he’s Again in the middle of a fight- Scoundrel boyfriends running away from people they owe money- “To help a friend. Not Arthur… you’re the only friend I’ve got.” Firelight talks about pheasants and friendships- The macho man talk with Arthur is literally just jealousy - When Arthur and Gwaine finally break into the room Merlin is stuck in, Arthur is focused on the quest and Gwaine just brings Merlin in for a hug bc he’s so happy he’s okay

At this point (after knowing him for not long at all), Gwaine absolutely knows Merlin has magic. First of all- the three parts of the quest- Gwaine absolutely worked out what Merlin brought to the table. You can tell in the way he looks at Merlin after Arthur walks out of the room, his eyes narrow and he gives this little smile. And instead of pressuring him to tell him or using that knowledge to his advantage, Gwaine says nothing. LOVE.

Season 4 Episode 6:- Gwaine just talks on and on and on about how great Merlin is and how kind and good and pure he is to Arthur

Season 5 Episode 12/13:- He finds this girl he loves and entrusts Merlin to take care of her instead of Gaius the court physician because he trusts Merlin most- He then leaves her to go to Merlin - Gwaine literally betrays the woman he loves for The Man He Loves—- he gives up the first committed love and security he’s ever had and lies to her for Merlin (and Arthur but Gwaine’s already told us dead on who he does things for - his best friend Merlin)

Those are just the big things. In every episode that Gwaine is in, Gwaine consistently shows that he does things for the people he loves and he’s said that the person he loves most is Merlin. He knows about Merlin’s magic but other than one gentle nudge (“you can tell me who you’re looking for”), he doesn’t push Merlin to tell him, just let’s him do it in his time and protects him as best he can. He gives Merlin unconditional support and love and protection, not to mention flirting with him every chance he gets.
