greer stothers & the pathetic ordeal of their white fragility
this is a post about the white fragility displayed in maybe the most self-victimizing post they've made yet that i personally think is worthwhile to dissect.
while most of this isn't directly related to their racism, plenty of it is, & it all comes back to their whiteness & their white fragility. the first nerve struck was also the sorest: the accusation of racism. they responded to it poorly, but they responded. the worst thing a white person can be is not racist, but perceived as racist. the constant assertion that they're a poor little baby being attacked & victimized for messing up a little is the kind of escalation & narrative-twisting of a white person deeply upset not by their racism but by the fact people are perceiving them as racist - & while there are many other criticisms (misogyny, transmisogyny, fatphobia, & ableism; the violation of reasonable fan-creator boundaries; the invasion of reviewer spaces; etc) wrapped up in it all, how they react to everything else has all been downstream of their extremely, pathetically white reaction to learning that others think they're racist & that their handful of poor & highly performative responses to learning that cemented them as a racist in others' minds rather than dispelling the accusations of bigotry.
& before we begin, i would like to apologize for my previous analyses of their racist behavior not addressing their fetishization of an orientalist caricature via how they talk about/lust over jafar from aladdin. if i've seen that movie, i don't remember it, so this was a blind spot - i wasn't intentionally disregarding orientalist racism.
despite promising they've fully vacated the tags, apparently not seeing criticism is a matter of trying not to look. what's there to try? lmfao. additionally, everything they claim is happening either isn't or is a drastic misrepresentation of events. apparently, they're also getting massive amounts of hate in their inbox, despite having anons off & blocking everyone they've encountered who has had a single critical thought about them. people are often not inclined to attach their blogs to the hate they send. i'll believe it when there's evidence.
ii. "people going through my photos to comment on my body weight"
this is about me but it didn't happen. photos of them are available on their blog, their site, & their author profiles on book-related sites. because they stick to photos that give the impression they're presently thin, i talked about this exclusively in relation to their fatphobia as it's directly relevant to that conversation. someone informed me that a bookstore's instagram (fabulosa_books) had a photo of greer holding their book; they are mid-sized, & because i was relying solely on how they present themself online, i incorrectly believed otherwise. because a person's relationship to the bigotry they perpetuate & reinforce is relevant to discussions about/criticisms of them doing so, i maintain that their interest in sticking to photos that give the impression they're presently thin, the fact they spent much of their life thin, & the fact they're mid-sized presently are all relevant to the extremely harmful, & sometimes fatal, stereotypes they've pushed about fat people, especially when the closest they've come to acknowledging their fatphobia was "yeah, well, i have a history of anorexia, so there!" i've made no value judgments. anyone who knows me knows i align my beliefs about fat with those of the fat liberation movement. a person's proximity to fatness is highly relevant when discussing their fatphobia, especially when it comes in the form of perpetuating the most dangerous & vile of fatphobic stereotypes.
iii. "people suicide baiting in my inbox"
really? off anon & everything? even with all your mass blocking, there are still tons of people who are both unblocked by and hate you enough to send you suicide bait with their blogs attached? can we have some evidence?
iv. "people writing fanfiction about what my family situation is"
who is doing this? how deep have you searched, how far have you gone, what trenches have you ventured into, how much time have you spent on the account you use to circumvent your own blocks to find these posts that i've seen not even a trace of?
v. "people diagnosing me with personality disorders"
this is about me & an anon i received but it didn't happen. tl;dr, someone with npd said they recognize a lot of themself prior to receiving treatment in greer's behavior, which isn't a diagnosis. i said that rather than this being indicative of a specific disorder, i believe that having a large online following encourages people already prone to ego-preserving behaviors to get really maladaptive with it (refusing to acknowledge wrongdoing, twisting criticism into bullying & hate, lying about people to look like the victim, spinning narratives, etc), regardless of if they demonstrate those maladaptive behaviors interpersonally.
vi. "people stalking me on other social media platforms to find accounts i've been friendly with"
vii. "people attacking the people i've been friendly with"
i could be wrong because this would be the world's biggest reach, but all that comes to mind is an anon i received who said they've disliked greer for a while due to them working professionally with someone who was a bigot & a cruel bully, & at one point (at least) selected an individual to target that bigotry at; the person apparently apologized & was forgiven but this doesn't change what happened. it definitely colors my opinion of greer, when taken in conjunction with some of their bigotry. i won't get more specific because i didn't know about this before the anon told me, & while they didn't name the person, they expressed embarrassment over sending the ask. this is a post about greer's pathetic whiny bullshit; out of respect for the anon, do not name or talk about who they were referencing on this post. i'm only mentioning this because i think that's what greer was talking about. if not, uh, i got nothing.
viii. "people going through my blog history to find 'cringe' things i've said (we all get it, i'm autistic)"
you mean the racism? the horny posting about jafar from aladdin, an orientalist caricature? no one's digging that shit up to call you cringe, they're doing it because it's racist as fuck. there's no way to disentangle sexualizing an orientalist caricature from fetishizing racism. everyone knows you know that, because being told that directly, no matter how respectfully, prompts you to delete & block. the orientalism is willful & everyone can tell.
& if it's about what people have said about the spider fucking: once again, no, it's not about it being cringe, it's about it being framed in a way to spin a narrative. it seems they've stopped doing this, but there was a brief point there where they were essentially insinuating that the issue people had with them was the spider fucking. no one cares about the spider fucking.
it's also particularly shitty to weaponize their autism like this when their book treats brain damage as a joke. people with brain damage deserve dignity & respect, rather than degradation & mockery, & there's no excuse for creating environments - real or fictional - that are hostile, or even "just" unwelcoming, to them.
ix. "people spam commenting on photos of my pets"
people who think bigotry is bad & think you should acknowledge your own if you want to keep pretending you hold the values that you pretend to (ie., giving a fuck about people of color, not being a transphobe, etc)?
x. "people speculating on which set of genitals i have"
shut the fuck up, transmisogynist. everyone who whines & cries about tme/tma knows it doesn't indicate genitals, & all people are doing is pointing out that you're tme when discussing your transmisogyny. cis men, non-transfem nonbinary people who have the penises they were born with, & transmascs who've had bottom surgery are tme & have penises; transfems are all tma, including those who choose to have a vagina.
all that aside, greer has LITERALLY talked about their anorexia causing amenorrhea when they were a teen. where's the speculation? quick message to everyone who knows my ed caused years of amenorrhea, or that i have endometriosis, or that i have a nexplanon implant because i didn't want an iud: what the fuck is wrong with you? why are you speculating about my genitals? that's so creepy. fuck you.
xi. "i haven't been perfect in my reaction to everything, but could we just be normal to each other? maybe?"
oh, sure, it's everyone else who needs to be normal. not someone who lies about not being in reader & reviewer spaces; lies about hatemail; lies about critics; twists words & spins narratives; hides behind both their anorexia & autism to deflect legitimate criticism; doubles down on their bigotry; explicitly refuses to apologize; & does everything in their power to constantly look like a poor little innocent victim. okay.
an imperfect response would've looked like taking accountability clumsily but fully, perhaps in a way that demonstrated you still have much to learn but are clearly willing to - not deflecting, ignoring, & mass blocking. your responses aren't imperfect, they're very bad, full of endless self-victimization, self-pity, & refusal to take any accountability.
xii. the tags: "#i've been trying not to comment on anything because i didn't want to encourage people by having a visible response #so maybe me acknowledging them now will make it worse #i dunno. it's very hard to know what the right thing to do is in these situations."
what's been commented on?? all you do is ignore things you can't twist in your favor & make shit up.
you know the right thing to do: permanently log out of the account you're using to circumvent your own blocks, get out of reviewer spaces, get out of the tags like you said you would, take complete, unwavering accountability for all your bigotry (perpetration of orientalist fetishization via hornyposting about a racist caricature included), apologize for defensively spinning a narrative by twisting words & lying, & actually do better. everyone's been saying this would be the right thing to do & everyone knows you're seeing it because you won't get out of the tags. oh my good god. i know you're reading this, greer, because i know you've read all my other posts that you know goddamn well aren't for you because you need a second account to see them, so either take this advice like all your critics have been saying you need to or stop whining.
we've gotta do something about white people, man.
