Okay so, I wanted to expand a bit about what I meant in this post about Leo and Raph’s similarities. Pictured above are two scenes which highlight this very well: how they are two sides of the same coin, and can rather easily tap into that other side (coin metaphor be damned).
For Raph, here we have a scene where he is separated from the others, in “Across The Universe”. He doesn’t act his normal hot-headed self so much in this episode; instead he lectures his temporary companion about honour, before berating himself for sounding like Leo. This implies that he very much understands Leo’s personality as well as the necessity of it - so when Leo’s not there to fill that role, he steps up to do it.
For Leo, although season four isn’t the only time this happens, he gives in to his emotions, and is shown as much more aggressive in the scene above. Raph states that he doesn’t mind, that he enjoys Leo talking tough. This also suggests a kinship because they understand each other’s emotional sides very well. In “Lone Raph and Cub”, whilst Donnie and Mikey just tell him to calm down, Leo lets Raph take off to blow off some steam - understanding his emotios, as we also often see Leo take off to vent on his own.
Both sides are essential, which they clearly acknowledge. Raph prefers to be able to go head first into battle, but he understands the necessity of a leader and honour too: and trusts Leo in this role, to the point that he mimics Leo when he’s not there. Meanwhile Leo prefers the role of the leader, but he isn’t above giving into emotions and venting his frustrations on his opponents every once in a while: and understands Raph’s emotional needs because he shares them.
This is the (part 1 of 2) dynamic I love about them the most. Not the overused and exaggerated anger about following orders or whatever, but the similarity and mutual appreciation for their roles, and understanding. How easily Raph can act like Leo, even though he’d rather be Raph, and how easily Leo can act like Raph, even though he prefers being Leo. This is why I find their relationship so intriguing.

Which one of the Super Turtles do you find easiest to write the perspective of, and which one of them do you find the hardest to write? Is this the same as the regular 2k3 boys? (For example, do you find Leo/Grav easiest to write or do you find there's some switching around and Leo/Grid is actually the easiest for you to write?) Thanks!!! Happy fic-iversary!
Yeah, easiest to write is the same as the '03 boys, I definitely find Grav and Grid easiest to write just like I do with Leo and Raph -- although unlike the usual universe, I find myself flowing a little more easily with Griddex than Gravi sometimes. I'm not sure why, maybe just because I have so many feelings about Griddex and he's the one who inspired me to write that drabble and go down this path.
Blob and Shelle alternate being the hardest to write but I think it's more often Shelle, which is surprising considering in the normal universe Mikey is the hardest for me to write. I think because it can be hard to strike the balance with Shellectro's sharper, more hardened edge while still retaining some of the softer Don we know in '03.

Thinking about all the Raphs and their deep seated fear of scaring or hurting the people they love, and how Grid's super strength makes him even more capable of doing that and thus even more at risk and how Sliver's judgment and the public eye put even more pressure on him to so, so carefully toe the line at all times.
Sliver in the comic saying, "We have been unable to max out his strength," and thus Grid always lives in some level of tension and uncertainty, not knowing his own limits. Sliver training him and his brothers by fear tactics and survival instincts -
(Clamped and bolted to the table with the drill, Sliver saying, "You must get out of this if you want to live!" And the voiceover: Sliver's aggression scared us. But we thought he was doing what was best for us.)
- But the training is so backwards because Grid isn't allowed to act on simple aggression or fear or survival instincts out there or anything could happen. What if, what if, what if?
Thinking about this Superman quote: "I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard, always taking constant care not to break something, to break someone; never allowing myself to lose control, even for a moment, or someone could die." And how deeply Grid can probably relate.
How effortless it would be for him to kill someone if he gives into that famous Raph temper for even a moment and he's not a ninja who can vanish anonymously into the shadows afterward. It would be out there for the whole world to see, it would damage his whole family's reputation by extension.
Thinking about the times I've been in my turtle suit and little kids have wanted to come up to me but then they get scared and shy away and hide when I'm just 5' 6". How much more often Grid probably has to deal with that being nearly seven feet tall (and taller.) Something about the concept of gentle giants but by the nature of his work and his home life, he can't be. But with no upper limits, what could he become?
He loves his work, he loves the fight! But he can't love it too much or what if he goes too far and people fear his aggression as he fears Sliver's? What if they get the wrong idea and think what he loves is the destruction rather than the defense?
People judging him by appearances, because people always do. He's probably the automatic fall guy everybody is most likely to point at with accusations of property damage and collateral damage and using too much force and carelessness and etc. etc. etc. out in the field. The biggest target by nature. Made to feel like he's scary. Made to feel like he literally doesn't fit in. Made to feel small for taking up too much space. Made to feel like he's too much or not enough.
It's all of Raph's characteristic struggles with self-control and self-worth and the fear of being his own - and his family's - worst enemy, amped up to as yet unknown limits, put under a constant spotlight, constant pressure, with no real parental guidance or support - with the "guidance" actively worsening it, with the parent being his family's worst enemy.
BUT HE STILL MANAGES TO DO GOOD!
All the torture and manipulation and betrayal and loss of trust, it was all perfectly stacked for him and the team to give in to feeling lost and purposeless but they don't! He doesn't! He's the one who makes the vow to the city on behalf of the team that he and his brothers will not rest until they've defeated the evil!
Sliver tried to instill survival by fear but he survives by doing good! And that's the real showcase of his boundless strength! AAAAAAAAAA

How do you imagine the emotions/reaction went during/after the first showdown between the turtles and Sliver went after his escape, especially Grav? I'm personally imagining all of them kind of crashed and had really bad post-traumatic reactions, meaning they weren't really available to support each other, but thankfully April and Casey thought to check in on them and helped them all through it (or helped Grid, Shelle, and Blob enough that they could go help Grav). Anyways, you absolutely rock in general, but HUGE KUDOS to you for gracing us with your awesome Super Turtles headcanons and fic. Seriously, thank you. <3
Oof, yeah, they definitely wouldn't handle it well. It could be extra unfortunate depending on how soon they got the alert that there was trouble in the city and whether or not the alert offered enough information that they knew it was Sliver they were about to face when they were heading out to address said trouble. Even just that little bit of extra time on the way there to try and mentally/emotionally prepare themselves could make all the difference...but then of course once they get there and they're actually fighting their father for the first time in the field, trying to prepare for it may not matter.
Grid would hold it together the most and probably end up taking point during the battle since he's been ready and itching to try and make Sliver pay for what he did; at least in that moment, it'll do him some good to take out the aggression that's been building toward him.
Blob would falter, because a part of him still hasn't processed/doesn't want to believe that this is their life now, that this was their father and now they're enemies. It hasn't had enough time to sink in; he doesn't want to be fighting him.
Grav would be triggered just seeing him face to face again (much like Leo seeing the Shredder's elite guard again after they ambushed him.) Plus it could very well have been one of Grav's first times back in the field after recovering, so that would make split second fieldwork decisions a lot harder, hence Grid needing to step up.
It's hard to say how Shelle would perform; it'd probably depend on the specific parameters of the battle. Like if Sliver's creating any kind of technological or electrical crisis for him to focus on, he can compartmentalize and do what needs to be done. Ending up anywhere near water, however? A fire hydrant bursts as collateral street damage or an antigravity push from Sliver nearly sends him into a park fountain? Forget it, he's seizing up.
After the battle, you're totally right, they would all be a mess.
All of Blob's grief would flood right back up; he'd be so upset and frustrated, probably crying and kicking himself for hesitating. Grav would feel crushed for letting his fear get the better of him, especially with the added shame of being out in public where the civilians could see him at less than his best, and has probably been stuck in a panic or anxiety attack the whole way home - that or he might just start shutting down and, of course, isolating himself, because that's what's been instilled in him now when he's vulnerable. Just hide.
Shelle would waver because he wouldn't be sure which of them to prioritize to console, unless it's a case where he's been triggered too and he can't help, and Grid feels totally overwhelmed watching his brothers crumble like this because he may be good at coming out swinging in the field but he doesn't know what to say or do to make it better now, if there's anything he even can say. He may end up paralyzed by indecision or scrambling to make it stop, make it stop, and end up making the pandemonium worse and then feel horrible and guilty for it. Ultimately everybody spirals into anxiety and/or panic by extension.
I like your idea of April and Casey helping them afterward, I could definitely see that. April might handle PR, try to get any reporters off their back by making her own statement as mayor while Casey tried to do damage control and help the Supers pull themselves together behind the scenes. Reminding them this isn't their fault, helping Blob calm down, reminding Shelle he needs to take care of himself first, giving Grid tasks to do like bringing blankets, tissues, a cup of water and such. Actions speak louder than words, after all, and then maybe Grav can be lured back out. A nice pot of tea and painkillers passed around and quiet time for everybody!
And because this is early on and it's going to take some time for the turtles to build trust with them beyond a working relationship, it's probably only after they leave and it's just the four of them that any of the others aside from Blob would be willing to have a good long cry.
...You're kinda making me want to write it now XD We'll see. I'm just so glad people enjoy my writing for them as much as I do, it's so much fun exploring such an underrated part of the canon. Thank you so much for giving the Supers and my interpretation of them a chance! I love them and I really love sharing them with all of you! <33
How much did you end up cutting out of "I Can Take It"/how many scenes did you imagine for it that you ended up not writing? "I Can Take It" is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, fic in the past couple of years. <3

I did start a scene where they were on their way to the bridge to face the Terrorkinetics, where I would have let the tension keep building after the argument. Then I figured nah, drop the travel time and put the reader right into the action.
There was another version of the others finding out what's happening to Grav where Shelle's fiddling with the security system ended up giving them a live feed. I scrapped that because Sliver would be too smart to let there be any camera evidence in the training hall.
I cut a bit of dialogue from Grid when he was sitting at Grav's bedside and went through different versions of the moment Grav woke up. One version had Grid tearful and frustrated with him for keeping secrets and isolating/sacrificing himself but I opted for a more relieved tone instead.
I considered a scene (that I had even forgotten about until I just checked my notes!) after the turtles find out about Utromidium where Grid revisits the table with the drill and realizes the cuffs used to tie him to the table were laced with it, which meant Sliver had rigged the "training" against him from the start. If I recall correctly, I think I scrapped that because if that had been the case, his powers would have been dampened and the drill obviously would have done a lot more damage that wouldn't have been so easily hidden from the others. It wouldn't have made sense.
One of the biggest plot points I set aside was Grav running training drills with his brothers. When he first negotiated with Sliver, he said he'd be able to set an example and demonstrate for them in a group setting. I was going to have Sliver directing Grav and Grav in turn directing them during training, trying to subtly soften his grueling tactics into something more palatable for the others to do, while they notice he's getting more and more run down.
That was going to lead to a late night conversation in the kitchen with Grid where Grav has basically lost hope of getting out of this situation. He tries to sound encouraging of his brothers' training efforts as a trio without him but in his resignation to his own fate, it ends up sounding more like a defeated goodbye. It was definitely going to set off some alarm bells in regards to his state of mind.
There's a little over 900 words of cut content but now I'm kinda conflicted about posting it, I don't know why :/
The people who read ICTI as I was posting it in real time may remember I also put up a poll about whether or not to include an epilogue. It would have time-jumped to a point after the "Reality Check" episode with them processing Sliver's death and wistfully envying what Mikey's world sounded like, but at the time I didn't want to tie it in that tightly to the 2003 universe - and that concept would eventually evolve into what has become A Looking Glass Darkly!
