Painted Zeros

Painted Zeros are a three piece rock band from NYC. Made up of Katie Lau, Andy Dymond and Jared Kaner the band have played a string of shows in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the U.S.'s north-east. I first heard the track Palm Tree and I have been hooked ever since. For me it sounded like taking a power washer to the mundane and I have used it as a benchmark when listening to other bands ever since.

Now they are back with 3 new tracks which you can (and should) listen to below.

Call Back, // and Masochist manage to sit above the usual dreamy and reverb drenched crowd and deliver enticing results which in itself is a thing of beauty. I might be getting carried away but I don't think I am so listen for yourself.

Mt. Royal

  Here's a nice equation for you.

Big in Japan + Katrina Ford from Celebration = Mt Royal.

The combination of fuzzy bass, space-plated guitar tones and Katrina's vocal make this track fizz to life. I can't wait to have a warm day so I can boom this from my roof terrace and turn North London into The Beta Band scene from High Fidelity.

Great Pagans

  A fixture on my playlist of late and it looks like I’m not the only one. Great Pagans have been riding the waves of murmurs resonating from their Great Pagans EP released on Anti-Ghost Moon Ray Records at the end of last year. One of many promising exports from the UK’s south coast collective. They travel to London in February.

Sir Sly

'Ghost' was one of the first tracks I blogged about last year and this live version is somehow even more mesmerising. The biggest disappointment about this band is that I won't get to see them until they come to the UK. If there is any peeps state-side, please go see these guys.

New track 'Gold' is filled with a big beat, crunchy pianos and beautiful vocal melody. Man, I fucking love this band.

Bondax

Head back a year and Bondax were just writing tracks in their bedrooms but after really breaking it last year, 2013 holds big things for the duo. They released their new single ‘Gold’ earlier this month and are in the studio working on their debut album. More big things to come from these boys.

Salt Ashes

The new Salt Ashes track is Gold by name, Gold by nature. Produced by Cruelty, this Brightonian's newest track is so ridiculously good I've had it on repeat for the most part of the weekend. With vocal flairs of Niki & The Dove and production style similar to Nicolas Jaar mixed with 80's poly synth, this is scored as a big fucking yus.

Wanderhouse

I'm a real sucker for downtempo-icy-piano-spacey music and Wanderhouse deliver big style. The duo is made up of Marie Moreshead [singer] and Dr. Rosen Rosen [Producer] and hail from Los Angeles. Judging by the style of 'Sugar', this could be a massive year for them.

They've got some other corkers on their page, but still trying to get over this one first.

Girls Names / Cymbals / Tough Love

I got a crush on Tough Love Records at the moment uploading two up-coming releases on their Soundcloud over the last week; Girls Names 'Pittura Infamante' and Cymbals 'The Natural World'.

First of all, Girls Names.

The Belfast band hit the scene back in 2009, but are moving away from their surf indie roots into a much darker vibe; its a real nice '82 Manchester sound to it. I know what I mean.  

'The New Life' will be release on February 18th.

Next up is Cymbals making a stunning entrance to 2013 with a peach of sparkly dance music aka 'The Natural World. This song makes me look like a right dick, dance-walking to work [emphasising the synth riddims with hand movements] but hey, fuck you. It's great.  

'The Natural World' will be available to buy from 23rd January.

Disclosure x AlunaGeorge

Out on 17th February on PMR Records, 'White Noise' is a collaboration from superstar duo Disclosure and Aluna Francis of AlunaGeorge, taken from the duos forthcoming album.

Clocking over seven thousand plays in 30 minutes, expect this track to continue to rise as it is simply, a beaut.

Only Real

Returning with the other side of his double A-side first release is Only Real with 'Blood Carpet', out at the end of the month via ASL Records, on limited 300 release [order here from Rough Trade].

'Blood Carpet' is along the trademark Only Real sound; the longing reverbed body-surf guitar mixed with a cheeky [although darker] vocal riddim, combined with a beautiful sampled drums.

He's hitting up The Shacklewell Arms on the 28th for his single launch party.

My London / The Shacklewell Arms

First, it is its popularity juxtaposed with location. Squeezed behind the bend on Shacklewell Lane, somewhere between the shanky estates of Hackney and the vibrant hipster nightlife of Dalston you’d expect the SA to be infested with lonely old men with bloodshot eyes. Astoundingly, the place is always packed with pleasant, trendy young people.  As you enter the venue, you get instantly hit by the warm, damp waft bringing to mind your nan’s basement. The front welcomes you with the bar, cool bar staff and most obviously… 80’s arcade games, which haven’t shown me any proof of vitality. Venturing deeper into this catacomb of a venue you discover the live room at the back catering for about 200 people. It features one of the most bizarre stages in London – tiny and embellished with alien arches covered with incomprehensible frescos, dividing the stage in two and creating a secret little cave for the drummer at the back. Finally there is also a beer garden – vast, welcoming and bringing to mind your nan’s backyard - perfect to chill out when the music gets too much.  The most important thing about the Shacklewell Arms is perhaps the infinitely eclectic mix of music that it offers. It never fails to showcase the coolest up and coming bands before the rest of the world caches up. Aside from live gigs it also hosts club nights and after parties, not excluding any genre known to man, and members of various popular bands can often be spotted partying under its damp, frescoed roof.  Aside from being a reliable music venue, the SA also offers an impressive food menu and great deals. Following the tradition of English pub cuisine it serves Pie & Mash and great Sunday Roasts to cure your hangover. You can also taste some traditional North American cuisine in the form of Hank’s gourmet hot dogs.  Overall, the Shacklewell Arms is the ultimate venue according to East London standards. It serves cool music, trustworthy food and good vibes. The only problem with it is that this humid smell kinda gets into your hair and clothes a bit if you spend the whole night there, but hey, that makes you #authentic.
