I really did not enjoy Chapter 113 of Thousand Autumns at all...every time a schemer who was born into low status but rose to a high one through their schemes and resents their society dies and has their criticism of the luck-based nature of class and corresponding quality of life disregarded by the protagonist it reaffirms my need to work on my WIP where such a characters is the protag even harder.

its so frontloaded to the first bit of the book but I really do like Zhongdian Poster Peerless Cucumber's relationship to being a guy who reads Horny Male Power Fantasy Light Novels obsessively and then gets sucked into one with really very little intent of engaging with the power fantasy for himself at all. He just thinks its cool to see Binghe do it. Yes He spends a few chapters being like oh this whips im an immortal master and i can do magic? Hee hee swings my sword around all cool....now im going in the magic caves so i can level up and do sick fighting moves instead of getting my ass kicked all the time....participating in a showy exhibition match and taking a moment to revel in how cool and powerful he is now....and then immediately throwing all of that away to jump in front of and shield the guy who has absolutely bulletproof plot armor and thereby permanently fucking up his ability to powerscale. It does not occur to him to try to like. Get stronger so he can avoid being killed by the incredibly strong protagonist. He doesnt even think of that as possible to do and he's not especially interested. He just likes to kick his feet up and eat some peanuts and watch Binghe do badass protagonist shit.

bingge and bingmei are fucked up in the head but in two very different diametrically opposite directions, by the time of the showdown extra.

one is your typical overpowered incel who has sealed off and said "sayonara loser" to his emotional intelligence and core feelings due to a collection of traumas so deeply buried and unaddressed for close to a decade that, idk where would i even start, to peal off the layers of bullshit he's wrapped himself in. it's a mix of mbj's coldness and detachment + sj's brand of traumatic childhood all funneled into one very volatile and very calculative individual with the power to change the fabric of the world he lives in. ultimately the worst thing is that bingge doesn't know himself, doesn't know what he needs to be happy, and he will just continue consuming and consuming to try to sate himself. and it will never be enough

on the other hand, by the end of the novel, bingmei is a reformed yandere very much attuned to his own emotions: he knows what he needs to be happy and content, he progressively learned that closing himself off to shen qingqiu is a biiiig mistake and that practicing vulnerability (yk, the kind that is manipulative and an act but it is ALSO how he actually feels. you understand) is the way to connect with the person he loves. and get what he wants, which is kisses and domestic bliss with his mommydaddyshizunhusband. he'd rather be doing amateur carpentry, house chores and cooking than scheming and conquering and fighting. (if he's gonna scheme it is with the goal of persuading shen qingqiu to do something kinky). the problem with all this is that bingmei's mental and emotional stability is absolutely dependent on ONE (1) person. if he loses shizun, he will literally die.

xie lian wants so badly for everyone to be Equal and he continually exercises his power and privilege to this end without seeing that it's the very exercise of that power that reinforces inequality. his desire to save people comes from his hatred of inequality but by positioning himself as mu qing's savior he's reiterating again and again that he is the superior with the power to help or hurt the one with agency and mu qing is the inferior who is xie lian's servant or playmate according to his whim. and if mu qing resents it everyone will just see him as ungrateful and say this is what comes of trying to treat servants as equals. hi I’ve decided to trust you with media opinions bc of ur rockin art and bodacious posts. if I was theoretically* interested in reading the mxtx novels and haven’t read any yet, what order should I read them in? thank you for your help 🙏

First of all, thank you for liking my posts!!! ^^ I'm glad you're interested in reading the books hehe!!

I would personally recommend reading them in order of publication (Scum Villain's Self Saving System > Mo Dao Zu Shi / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation > Tian Guan Ci Fu / Heaven Official's Blessing) for a few reasons:

- The first book, SV, establishes a lot of the author's opinions on writing itself, world-building, themes, etc that are important to understand in the latter works.

- The second book, MDZS, further establishes a lot of themes of society that, imo, lay the foundation for some events in TGCF.

- There's a visible shift between focus across the 3 books: SV is mostly character driven, MDZS is fairly mixed character/plot driven, and TGCF is mostly plot driven. If you're new to danmei/Chinese media in general, it's very easy to get lost in the grandiose plots and extensive worlds that the latter series drop you into. I personally found that SV is an especially good onboarding point given that it's such a meta book, so there's a great deal of footnotes and narration* regarding common tropes/structures that are played straighter/assume prior knowledge in MDZS and TGCF.

*However, I believe all the official translations feature footnotes and glossaries, so hopefully you won't get too lost regardless!!

- Along with focus, the scale of the books' settings definitely increase as the series go on; SV has the least amount of important characters/locations, MDZS focuses on a considerably larger cast and world, and TGCF goes even beyond that.

- Lastly, the length of the books goes up considerably the farther you get down the line! SV is only around 100 chapters, MDZS is something like 200, and TGCF is like 500! So if you have any doubts or want to give yourself a way out in any way, definitely would recommend starting with the one with the least required investment.

However I will say that you can honestly read them in any order you'd like! Majority of people these days start with MDZS because it's the most popular, and though it's a bit rarer, I've seen people start from TGCF as well. Ultimately just go for the one that interests you the most and work from there! You don't need to read them all either, and definitely check out tw lists before you start them! Always prioritize your personal health over completionism ^^
