Yochai Benkler, a Harvard Law School professor who co-directs the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, says, āFoxās most important role since the election has been to keep Trump supporters in line.ā The network has provided a non-stop counternarrative in which the only collusion is between Hillary Clinton and Russia; Robert Mueller, the special counsel, is perpetrating a ācoupā by the ādeep stateā; Trump and his associates arenāt corrupt, but Americaās law-enforcement officials and courts are; illegal immigration isnāt at a fifteen-year low, itās āan invasionā; and news organizations that offer different perspectives are āenemies of the American people.ā
Benklerās assessment is based on an analysis of millions of American news stories that he and two co-authors, Robert Faris and Hal Roberts, undertook for their 2018 book, āNetwork Propaganda: Manipulation, Disinformation and Radicalization in American Politics.ā Benkler told me that he and his co-authors had expected to find āsymmetric polarizationā in the left-leaning and the right-leaning media outlets. Instead, they discovered that the two poles of Americaās media ecosystem function very differently. āItās not the right versus the left,ā Benkler says. āItās the right versus the rest.ā
[ā¦]Ā Conservative media outlets, however, focus more intently on confirming their audienceās biases, and are much more susceptible to disinformation, propaganda, and outright falsehoods (as judged by neutral fact-checking organizations such as PolitiFact). Case studies conducted by the authors show that lies and distortions on the right spread easily from extremist Web sites to mass-media outlets such as Fox, and only occasionally get corrected. When falsehoods are exposed, core viewers often react angrily. According to Media Matters, Fox hosts used the word āinvasionā thirty-three times in the thirty days before the midterm elections. After Shepard Smith, the Fox News anchor, contradicted Trumpās scaremongering about immigrantsādeclaring, āThere is no invasion, no one is coming to get youāāviewers lashed out at him on social media.

She says that Fox has solid news reporters, but she became so troubled by the lack of standards on āFox & Friendsā that she wrote a thinly veiled novel, āAmanda Wakes Up,ā about the blurring of journalistic lines at a cable morning show. ā āFox & Friendsā was a fun show, but it was not a news show,ā she says. āIt regularly broke the rules of journalism. It was basically Rogerās id on TV. Heād wake up in the morning with some bee in his bonnet, spout it off to Bill Shine, and Shine would tell us to put it on TV.ā She says that the showās producers would ācull far-right, crackpot Web sitesā for content, and adds, āNever did I hear anyone worry about getting a second source. The single phrase I heard over and over was āThis is going to outrage the audience!ā You inflame the viewers so that no one will turn away. Those were the standards.ā
