You all are great for asking about my Mozambique work. I’m currently traveling between Pemba, Quelimane, and Maputo evaluating a USAID coastal cities project. Challenging stuff to say the least. I can’t post project pics here (government stuff), but I am definitely taking time to relate and reflect and understand.
A former Portuguese colony, Mozambique is a beautiful, complex, coastal country rich in natural resources but disturbingly poor in governance and equality. It’s a complicated place to be. There’s some sort of potential revolution going on that I don’t understand, but I can say the service industry and vendors and taxi drivers are all on edge. The national currency is on a serious downward spiral against the USD, impacting the wider economy. Anyway, it’s too heavy for tumblr; enjoy the pics from this week!
Pics:
1) 1.5 m tall sculpture of old tea pots, plates, and utensils. Amazing craftsmanship (artist is a Rastafarian!).
2) Baby gecko born on my hotel doorstep. It was a fast lil bugger despite being hours old.
3) A huge piece of rose/pink quartz I found among some ancient corals in Pemba.
4) Muslim boy taking a break from school.
5) Tonight’s full moon over the Indian Ocean.
6) .5k trash heap on fire in Maputo. Pic I took a few days ago.
7) Shrimps. They’re wild caught here in Mozambique and delicious.
8) Paquite Quete bario in Pemba. Absolutely hopeless poverty and I will need several therapy sessions after visiting there.
9) Fish ironically being sold in front of the Ministry of Commerce.
10) Local chicken, peri-peri grilled. Astounding.

vincent kartheiser should play paul ryan in the movie version of this election because he has experience playing a sad man with a weird hairline
