How i imagine my readers getting to the point in The Black Throne trilogy that explains why I never market the story as a romance
For anyone wondering, romance has to have a happily ever after and has to be central to the plot. While there are romantic subplots and I could, and sometimes do, market those, I choose not to do so often so I don't mislead readers since the main characters dont get a hea.
Lore time!
So this is Laci Holigan, you'll meet her at a later date, promise, but she's a barbarian. I feel it's going to pop up eventually, so i wanted to talk a bit it a little. The barbarians in my story are the sister race to humans. They're generally taller, bulkier in build, stronger, faster, have 2.5x better main senses (sight, hearing, smell, etc), and live an average of 120 – 150 years. Besides physicality, the biggest difference lies in culture. Where humans are very adaptable and have become such a melding of all cultures, they no longer have one, barbarians are loosely inspired by the Maori people of New Zealand. What you see on Laci is one three iterations of the warrior tattoo, given based on "gender" (masculine, feminine, and androgynous), and there are plenty more types of tattoos barbarians receive throughout their life.
Thanks for coming to my brief Ted talk 😁

For the wonderful L.C. Browning on instagram. The villainous blood witch from her newest story, Nyvara
Full review below
The first and last few chapters were wonderful. I absolutely loved the unsettling, "something's going to happen" atmosphere built by the incredible prose, eerie setting, and heartfelt struggle from Maeve. I did enjoy, even love, the beginning and the end.
The middle is where it changes for me.
With a book as short and condensed as this is (I knew that it was a novella, that's not what I'm getting at), word choice becomes imperative. It is because of the constraints that it's even more important than it would be a for full-length novel to be mindful of alternatives. The amount of times smoke/mist/fog "curled" around something was a little much, for example. "Curl/ed/ing", because of how often it was used, lost the impact it originally had despite how good it was used. Same went for many other descriptors and phrases. Had alternatives been used more frequently, I feel it would have kept the haunting prose alive and strong, perhaps made it more intense, but more importantly, it would've kept me in the story. The other things were minor, an inconsistency in writing (for example, how it was told Xander was in a cart but with how Maeve moved or spoke, it didn't seem like he was), or a bit of redundancy (literally, just a bit in one or two places), things that I would mention but that wouldn't have impacted on how much I enjoyed the story. It's only when we reach Xander's POV that we get something different, breaking up the repetitive words/phrases, and we get more of him toward the end.
Isolated, the prose is lovely in a make your skin crawl sort of way. The body horror was visceral and gritty. From start to finish, the flow of the story worked very well with the growing realization of what the orchard was, what it wanted, and what Maeve had done. I think one of my favorite things was how there was always inclusion of the village and how the events affected it. It was a great use of environment/setting to build atmosphere and stakes outside, yet still within the main character(s).
How do folks feel about book unboxings?
(No sound. About 1min30sec)
Hey, did you know Raine the Recluse on instagram and tiktok offers book boxes at her online store? You do now, so go check it out. While you're there, make sure you check out this gothic, gay, vampiric story and give it a read!
Hahaha, no I don't wanna cry out of frustration right now. It's not like I hopped on my computer to start writing and couldn't because my Microsoft subscription is $100 and I don't have $100 so I can't actually write or edit any of the three books I need to write and edit when my brain tells me it's also good to go because the time is right (i have time thing i wont get into) which is crazy since my brain has been working against me lately. That totally didn't happen. I'm fine 🥲
Eight minutes before the end of Pride Month and I choose to start writing this now... yep.
Life is tough right now and its only getting tougher for marginalized communities. This Pride Month, I hope you were able to find a reason to smile, had a moment you felt undeniably yourself and comfortable, and I hope you were able to make a Maga and every other piece of sh*t so magnificently uncomfortable simply because you exist unapologetically.
Remember:
Queer all year. Happy Pride ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
