“Pretty much any job can get you that, mister,” Jess said, shrugging. “Just with the right amount of self-importance and not giving a fuck. –I’ll take a whiskey, please.”
“That’s very true, and self importance and not giving a fuck are practically my best traits.. So what is it that you do?” He was strangely interested in this woman now. “Make that two.”
Addison was trying once again to be out, she had foudn more confidence as of late and was going to try again. She sat at the bar finishing up her drink when the very handsome, very mysterious looking, very suave gentleman started talking to her. She smiled at him when he said the prettiest looking stranger. “That is very nice of you to say.” She said smiling. His offer to by her a drink, “Ok, but only if I buy the next one.” She scrunched her face for a moment trying to remember her latin. “My latin is rusty, but I think an appropriate response is Ratio Nulla. I think.” She said smiling.
“I think that those who are blessed with good looks should be complimented at every oppertunity, don’t you?” Silas smiled easily, his dark eyes flicking over the woman’s face and resting at her lips for a moment or two before meeting her gaze again. A beautiful woman who knew Latin, Silas’ weakness, second only to a girl with a gun in her pocket and a smile on her face. “Very good,” He complimented, his smile widening, “In vino veritas, or in this case.. whatever it is you happen to be drinking tonight. Are you a hard liquor or fruity shots kind of gal?”
“Prettiest looking stranger?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. “You know, I can pay for my own, but if you insist.”
“Well sometimes it’s the ugliest stranger, sometimes it’s the first stranger I see wearing the colour blue.. It varies, I like to keep things interesting. I threw in the prettiest looking stranger part just to try and hit on you, and, well, because it’s true.” Silas was completely unashamed of this confession, and just shrugged his shoulders. “Sure I know that, but I’m a chivalrous guy. I need to keep up my rep.”
“That’s one hell of a fucking pickup line,” She eyed him, raising her glass to show him that she was already set. “I would have preferred something along the lines of – ‘Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?’” With a laugh, the brunette took a swig of her beer before turning towards him. Hazel hues venturing down his person. “Something about myself? That’s a boring game. Already full of disappointments, Stranger. How about we make it a little more interesting and you try to guess. Oh, and I would never dare talk you out of paying.”
“Go big or go home.” Silas raised his glass as if he were making a toast to that, and his pure genius when it came to pickup lines. “I don’t like to do anything half-arsed, if you get what I mean, love.” He mimicked her swing, taking a gulp of whatever remained of the whisky in his glass without so much as a wince. His alcohol drinking abilities were perhaps among his greatest talents, and that was saying something, because Silas was the sort of man who assumed himself to have many, many talents. “Try and guess something about you? Well that’s easy enough..” Silas pressed his fingertips together and let out a hum, playing the psychic. “You are hiding a great big stinking secret. There. Now you guess something about me.”
Although it was lauded as the best place for a drink along the east coast - a dubious honor, at best - the Drunken Sailor also had some of the best burgers in Maine - or so Tris, who had never been anywhere outside of Northpoint in Maine, thought. He grinned at the man seated at the corner of the bar he was waiting near, amused at the entire monologue. “You’ve even got a phrase all queued up —- good for you. Though I’d hardly say you look drunk. You do this often, then?” he asked, quirking an eyebrow. But he laughed again, shaking his head. He wouldn’t drink, but he could at least give this guy a fact about himself - and kill two birds with one stone, or so the saying went. “Thank you, but I’m designated driver. For life.”
This guy wasn’t fooling for the sauve front Silas was drunkenly trying to pull off, and the man found he actually rather liked that, causing his lips to quirk into a grin. “Course I do, throwing around meaningless Latin phrases is how I get laid.” He was a man who was full on all the time, and Silas wasn’t sure if that meant that he constantly eluded a aura of inebriation or that of sobriety, and he wasn’t sure if he much cared either. It was nice to hear that he wasn’t making a prat out of himself though, although even if he’d been confronted with the fact he probably wouldn’t have believed it.“Often enough. I move around a lot and, like I said, bar night on moving day is one of my traditions.” He shrugged, but frowned at the next comment. What an outrage. “Is there any particular reason for that? A traumatic incident in childhood? An illness?” Tact was not a word that came up in Silas’ dictionary.
She turned to the man who apparently seemed to be talking to her, expression stoic as ever. “I would have settled for ‘let me buy you a drink’. And rest assured, I won’t be talking you out of paying. What is it you want to know about me, or the town?”
“I can already sense that this is going to be quite the conversation.” Silas intoned, his sarcasm seeming friendly.. for now. “I don’t know, doll. Your favourite colour? Star sign? Childhood pets? That sort of sappy talk. Or, you know, we could play a drinking game. Do people still do those?”
“Sir, that is way too many words than I’d care to hear,” Jess said tiredly. “However, one drink can’t hurt, especially since it’s free.”
An eyebrow quirks up in amusement at this comment, and there is a brief struggle as Silas tries to work out whether he found her disrespectful or entertaining. “Ah, I just like hearing the sound of my own voice. S’why I became a teacher after all.” He motions at her to place her order with a careless wave of his hand. “Well, what do you want?”
“I like to christen the arrival to a new place by sharing a drink with the prettiest looking stranger I can find, call it a tradition, call it trying to make a new friend in an unfamiliar place..” Silas shrugs, putting the glass to his lips and taking a gulp of it’s amber content, eyeing up the stranger he had been trying to engage in conversation as he did so. “So let me buy you a drink, or two, or three... Tell me something about yourself or about this town that I don’t know. And don’t try to talk me out of paying, absentem laedit cum ebrio qui litigat. “
