This is a homopolar motor.
It’s really easy to experiment with at home. It is driven by the Lorentz force - the force which is exerted by a magnetic field on a moving electric charge. When a battery is placed on top of a magnet, and a wire then connects the top of the battery back down to the magnet, the circuit is complete.
Students in our Summer Schools were making these the other day. This one won the ‘most creative design’ competition <3
Hanahaki Disease.

“Oh man–” Tina lets out a laugh as Havoc’s tail wags at full speed now, nosing at Ev’s cheek as he tries to lick their face. “I’m sorry, he’s hardly going to leave you alone now. I THINK he likes you.” She snorts, patting him on the calf before she nods towards the couch, encouraging the two to follow.
“It is good. We haven’t hung out in so long. I was worried you dropped off the face of the earth.” Tina turns to flash them a grin, “Xe and Oleg are perfect. Still trying to get Xena to come out of her shell but Oleg is such a good influence.” She smiles, nodding towards one of the armchairs, the kitten curled up sweetly atop of Oleg’s soft fur, the blue cat curled protectively around her. “…They do that all the time. It’s not good for my heart.”
Ev carefully keeps their mouth shut, but makes no attempt to stop the dog from slobbering all over their face. Doggie Kisses. Blessed. They do, eventually, manage to get back on their feet and follow Tina over to the couch.
(Not gone. Just busy. Found real work, not small jobs.) At the sight of the cats, they visibly melt. Too much cute in one place. They flop down on the couch and make a few kiss-noises, probably calling Havoc over more than either of the cats, but it's worth a try.

Ev should have expected it, really. Things were going well. They had steady work for a full month, they were able to make every payment they needed to and had some cash to spare, they’d even found a box worth of valuable parts on a scavenge. Naturally, things had to go bad.
They hadn’t predicted the kind of bad that was being cornered at their house, chased inside, and trying to block off the door while a murderer attempted to smash it in, shouting threats, but. Well, they were overdue for an attempt on their life, weren’t they?

The help was appreciated- they were breathing almost normally, but their legs still felt a bit shakey. They nodded along when he mentioned a dog, and tried to be careful walking to the next room. Yes, They liked dogs.
They stopped in the doorway, taking in the absolute disaster of their apartment. Car parts and electronics they'd been repairing were smashed and shattered on the floor, and through the door to the storage closet they could see a mess of biocomponents crushed and dropped on the floor. Aparently, he'd wasted some time to ruin as much of their work as he could.
They let out a shaky breath, hunted down their duffle bag where it was emptied out on the floor, and very much did not cry as they shoved things into it. They didn't have much to pack, and clutched the strap with both hands when they nodded at him. Ready to go.

Havoc growls at the stranger as soon as they slip through the door, ears flattening briefly against his head as he shifts on the spot. He studies them carefully, dipping his head closer to sniff at Ev’s hand and twitching back with a little growl before trying again.
“Hav… Come on, they’re a friend..” Tina sighs, shaking the scruff of his neck to grab his attention. The shepherd makes a groaning sound as his ears swivel, leaning back in to snuffle at the mechanic’s hand, finally letting Ev touch him. His tail begins to hesitantly wag, flicking with a soft thump as they pet him.
“There you go, big baby… Ev’s nice.” Tina smiles as Havoc rises, clambering closer to his new friend. “Ev, meet Havoc. Havoc, meet Ev.” She laughs a little, looking at the two fondly.
Ev gives them both a smile, slowly signing so they didn't spook him. (Nice to meet you, Havoc.) After a few friendly scratches, they add (pretty boy.) They don't take the growls personally- they'd been to the animal rescue a few times, even brought in a couple of strays themself. A lot of dogs needed a minute to adjust to new people.
(Good see you too,) they added to Tina. (How Xena? Oleg?)

A hard hit nearly made Ev drop their phone, and their scramble to keep hold of it pulled up a video call. Depending on how long it took to answer, Hank would probably hear some detailed threats.
Ev might have appreciated the aggressive treatment of their attacker, if they were in any state to notice. They flinched a bit at the contact, almost didn’t hear him speaking, but after a second they leaned into the hand and slowly focused on his face.
In and out. In and out. It was easier when someone else was telling them to do things- easier than trying to wrangle their thoughts, and fight the shaking, and try not to cry. But easier didnt really translate to faster, and it still took a few minutes to get their breathing mostly okay.
They were still shaking like a leaf, and at some point they’d started crying. You’re fine, they thought again, but it didn’t really help.
There’s noise behind them as the other officers come in and take the asshole. Hank looks back at them before looking at Ev.
“I’ll be right back. I’m going to give them my statement and then you’re coming to my house ok?” They could stay with him while the DPD took evidence and fixed their house. Hank stood, making sure they were ok, before turning to the officers.
They managed a couple quick nods, and once he walked away they slowly pulled their knees up to rest their head against them, slowly counting their breaths. In, two, three, out, two, three.
The man spat curses at every officer he passed, as he was dragged along out of the building. Several officers lingered, marking off the area and placing evidence markers through the apartment, including one who was happy to take note of Hank's statement.

Tina can’t help but sputter in laughter as Ev stood there like a deer in the headlights. She wasn’t too bothered if they weren’t a fan of dogs, she could always keep him in a separate room while they hung out. He’d whine like a big baby but she knew he’d get over it. It took a few moments to process what Ev had signed to her but eventually, Tina’s spaced-out concentration morphed into a smile nodding happily. “Sorry, I’m rusty as fuck. Your hands are way different than ‘ASL Anissa’s’” She snickers lightly with a shrug.
“Just give me a second to put some manners on him and then you can push the door open and say hi.” She closes the door over slightly as she turns to the canine that had been nosing at her leg the entire conversation. A patter of paws followed by excited panting and Tina’s quick and sharp command to sit has the Alsatian in position, body completely trained to the front door.
“You can come in now! Just be calm, he’s old and clingy. He can be territorial so he might growl a little.”
Ev waited very patiently. Once Tina gave them the ok, they pushed their way in, closing the door behind them, and gave the dog a smile and a little finger wave. They signed a quick (good boy) and knelt down, about an arm's length away, and offered out a hand.
They also took a moment to look around a bit before trying to give him a scratch behind the ears.

Avengers verse note
1. Why do I have so many aus, I never use any of them bc I'm too shy to start anything with them
2. Avenger verse Ev does a lot of illegal work bc thats what pays. They have made several mods for common starktech and theorized some for more advanced work. They avoid weapon work when they can, but they gotta eat

2 minutes. Not long. Not long at all.
Ev bit their tongue, pushing back against the cot, against the door, as he rammed into it again, hard enough to jostle the whole arrangement, and a dark corner whispered that 2 minutes might still be too long. The latch for the metal lock bar had long since torn out of the wall, ringing against the bar with every jolt, and they were going to have bruises across their back for a week from how hard they were pushing back, but they could hold for 2 more minutes, they could, they had to-
The next hit jostled the cot out of its place, no longer jammed against the dryer, and the one after sent Ev sprawling on the floor. The man cackled at them as they scrambled away. “There you are, you little shit! No where left to run, hah?!” He kicked past the cot, kicked them in the ribs, laughed again when they kept scrambling. Ev shoved another cot at him, but he barely flinched- he shoved it aside and kicked them over, pinning them on their back with a hand around their throat. “Thought about this a lot, y'know? Good to see you’re still scared shitless!”
Ev struggled, trying to land a kick or a knee on him, trying to pry his fingers loose, but, well, they weren’t exactly built for fighting. They could barely hear him past the pounding in their ears- especially once he pulled a knife, dragging the blade over their cheek until it stung.
A shot rang out behind them and the bullet lodged in the attacker’s shoulder. Hank stood in the doorway, revolver drawn.
“Get the fuck away from them, drop the knife, and get on the ground.” He all but growled out. A part of Hank almost daring the fucker to attack him with the knife. Give him a reason to shoot him again.
“Detroit Police. So don’t be fucking stupid.” Or do. The guy would look good with a bullet in his head. Shit, he shouldn’t be thinking that way. Hank kept the gun level on the guy. His glance shifting between him and Ev.
The man swore, dropping the knife as he stumbled away from the shot. As soon as his grip was gone, Ev rolled away onto their hands and knees, coughing ugly, hacking coughs now that they could breathe at all.
Unfortunately, the man was smart enough to realize this was a fight he wouldn't win, and despite giving Ev a furious look, he stepped back to the opposite wall and got down to his knees.
Meanwhile, Ev struggled to keep their breathing steady. Between the coughing, the fear, the blood dripping on their face, they were quickly headed for a panic attack. The pain in their throat from coughing felt too much like before, and they tried to focus on their throat was fine, they only cut their cheek, but it was getting harder to think.

Tina is just hanging up a fresh towel when Havoc lets out a bark, signalling Ev’s arrival even after she hears the wrap of knuckles on her door. “Oh relax, they’re a friend.” She laughs at her Alsatian’s stiff and alert posture, his eyes trained to the door. It had been so long since she’d last hung out or even spoken to the mechanic, Tina had even adopted another pet while they’d been out of touch.
The officer opens the door just a crack, peeking her head out to smile at them. “Hey! I uh- I forgot to ask… are you alright with dogs?”
Something like ten or twelve panicked thoughts fly through Ev's head between knocking and Tina opening the door- shit did I forget about her dog, do I still stink, god I hope I'm not at the wrong place, I should have showered first I smell like a garage- but they still give her a smile in return.
(Love all animals.) That was at least reassuring, that they hadn't forgotten she had a dog. Must have been a new recruit. They couldn't be too surprised- it had been ages since they'd had a chance to hang out, and it hadn't been hard to convince her to get two cats. (O-K to pet?)
