Because I can only handle posing so many characters in a scene, I still haven't introduced August's familiar, but he does have one! Her name is Lux, and she is very elusive, I suppose.

There are two primary ways to acquire a familiar:
The first is by binding a pet. Merlin, for instance, was just Solomon's dog before he became a familiar. The process awakens an animal, and they become sentient and have the abilities of a familiar, but otherwise don't change.
The other option is to call a familiar (think D&D's Find Familiar spell). This summons a magical creature to become a familiar, and so they may look more strange than a mundane animal.
All this to explain why Lux and August have the same color eyes, while Merlin and Solomon don't.
