OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didnât know what heâd done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.
Why canât we have a movie about him?
He was often called âSempoâ, an alternative reading of the characters of his first name, as that was easier for Westerners to pronounce.
His wife, Yukiko, was also a part of this; she is often credited with suggesting the plan. The Sugihara family was held in a Soviet POW camp for 18 months until the end of the war; within a year of returning home, Sugihara was asked to resign - officially due to downsizing, but most likely because the government disagreed with his actions.
He didnât simply grant visas - he granted visas against direct orders, after attempting three times to receive permission from the Japanese Foreign Ministry and being turned down each time. He did not âmisreadâ orders; he was in direct violation of them, with the encouragement and support of his wife.
He was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations in 1985, a year before he died in Kamakura; he and his descendants have also been granted permanent Israeli citizenship. He was also posthumously awarded the Life Saving Cross of Lithuania (1993); Commanderâs Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1996); and the Commanderâs Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2007). Though not canonized, some Eastern Orthodox Christians recognize him as a saint.
Sugihara was born in Gifu on the first day of 1900, January 1. He achieved top marks in his schooling; his father wanted him to become a physician, but Sugihara wished to pursue learning English. He deliberately failed the exam by writing only his name and then entered Waseda, where he majored in English. He joined the Foreign Ministry after graduation and worked in the Manchurian Foreign Office in Harbin (where he learned Russian and German; he also converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church during this time). He resigned his post in protest over how the Japanese government treated the local Chinese citizens. He eventually married Yukiko Kikuchi, who would suggest and encourage his acts in Lithuania; they had four sons together. Chiune Sugihara passed away July 31, 1986, at the age of 86. Until her own passing in 2008, Yukiko continued as an ambassador of his legacy.
It is estimated that the Sugiharas saved between 6,000-10,000 Lithuanian and Polish Jewish people.
Itâs a tragedy that the Sugiharas arenât household names. They are among the greatest heroes of WWII. Is it because they were from an Axis Power? Is it because they arenât European? I donât know. But Iâve decided to always reblog them when they come across my dash. If I had the money, IÂ would finance a movie about them.
He told an interviewer:
You want to know about my motivation, donât you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes, Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent.
People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many peopleâs livesâŚ.The spirit of humanity, philanthropyâŚneighborly friendshipâŚwith this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situationâand because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.
He died in nearly complete obscurity in Japan. His neighbors were shocked when people from all over, including Israeli diplomatic personnel, showed up at quiet little Mr. Sugiharaâs funeral.
I get really confused when americans, when talking about universal health care are like âyeh but itâs not free sweaty :) :) you have to pay it through taxes :) so gotcha!!â
and Iâm like âŚ.???? Thatâs the whole point??? Everyone pays their fair share so that no one has to be turned away because they donât have insurance??? And no one has to set up a Fundraiser page just so that they DONT DIE???? So people donât put off going to the doctor because theyâre scared of going bankrupt?? Because healthcare is a RIGHT and should be free at the point of access?!?
âSo no one has to be turned awayâ she says hahaha go to a universal health care country and get a necessary operation in less than a few years and come back and talk shit.
Look at the cure rates compared to mortality rates in universal health care countries and compare them to ours, then talk shit.
Tear your ACL in a universal health care country and see what the people say if you should go to their hospitals or go to an American hospital, then talk shit.
I do live in a universal health care country, actually. And I HAVE had a necessary operation here myself. I broke my arm years ago - the ambulance came within 5 minutes. I was seen in A&E by a doctor within 20 minutes. And I had the operation to put my arm back in place within hours - despite my condition not being life threatening. Hmm, donât see what was so hard about that? And oh yeah, it was all free of charge.
You donât seem to understand about how it works. Firstly, operations are prioritised. If someone comes in with an emergency, such as a ruptured aorta and bleeding out - of COURSE they will get an operation STRAIGHT AWAY. Like what do you think doctors do here, twiddle their thumbs while patients die?Â
And if someone has something that is not quite an emergency, but is serious, such as a bowel cancer, they will have their surgery within 1-2 weeks of seeing a specialist. And itâs free. The poor patient who is already stressed and worried sick about their cancer, will NOT also have to worry about insurance and bills and going bankrupt.
Sure, some operations that are not quite as urgent will have waiting lists. My gran just had her cataract operation - this is something that isnât life-threatening, not causing her pain at all, but of course is still affecting her life because she couldnât see very well. She had to wait a few months, which of course in an inconvenience, but she still got her operation, and she definitely didnât have to wait years (and I have never heard of anyone waiting years for an operation, and as a med student I have talked to a LOT of patients) so I donât know where you got that from (probably some right-wing american media, I assume). And like, Iâm sure most people would rather wait a bit longer than have to pay, or not ever get their operation because they canât afford it?
And Iâm not sure what you mean by your last bit. Are you really implying that countries other than the US couldnât repair an ACL tear? Like, really? Do you think countries with universal healthcare have no resources or money? Sorry to burst your deluded bubble, but other countries can handle an ACL tear, and many other operations (even neurosurgery - shock horror!), just fine thanks. Iâve never seen a patient shipped off to America.Â
âIâve never seen a patient shipped off to Americaâ daamn, i love this post
Not to mention that in countries like Australia, there are *also* private hospitals. If you *want* to spend tens of thousands of dollars to avoid waiting, you can?
As someone who would be dead, many times over, without universal health care, GET FUCKED.
And for the record: the only private hospital in my hometown (apart from taking quick non urgent NMR because the ones in the public hospital have quite a long queue) really sucks. For every important/urgent/non-basic procedure you have to go to the public one, which is considered btw a national reference in certain departments. Years for an operation? Nop. Months, one year and a few months tops for non-necessary surgeries. Urgent and necessary? Hours.
Oh and about the talking shit thingâŚ
But sure, the US wins it over in one thing: healthcare spending!
(Source here: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2015/oct/us-health-care-from-a-global-perspective )
So yeah, tell me again why should i pack my things and move right away to the US where iâd die unless iâm shitting gold like a freaking Lannister.
Reblogging because I love this reply
My favourite was that free health care would create death panels where people would judge if you were allowed to have the life saving operation that you needed.

Dude
You guys have that there already, and itâs called fucking insurance companies.
I live in Australia and at the end of November last year it was discovered that I had a fairly large and aggressively growing brain tumor. The only reason that I didnât have neurosurgery until the very start of January (a whole month! after my diagnosis!) was because I requested to delay it until after Christmas for my familyâs sake. Otherwise I would have had it sooner.Â
Look up how much acoustic neuroma surgery costs in the US. Wait no, Iâll save you the trouble â itâs $100,000 USD. My mother would have lost her house, be hugely in debt, and I would have had a lifetime of guilt.Â
Except! I wouldnât have even KNOWN I had a tumor in the first place, because in the US the doctor would have gone âI canât justify an MRI for these symptoms on your insurance planâ (yes, even if Iâd been insured) and that would have been that, unless I felt like coughing up thousands for the test myself, which I wouldnât have done because eh, if the doctor thinks the symptoms are nbd then itâs fine, right?Â
I would be dying of a totally treatable disease right now if I lived in the USA, and I wouldnât even know it. Or if by some miracle I did find out, my 68-year-old single mother would have no savings and no home now so that her daughter could have surgery.Â
So shut the fuck up.Â
People in the US who hate universal healthcare are upset that their gold standard might be knocked down to a silver standard of care (talking about people with super good insurance) so that someone with NO care can get bronze level care. If youâre someone with NO care, even healthcare that comes in a shitty eighth in the preliminaries is better than none at all. But weâre talking about leveling the playing field so that EVERYONE gets healthcare that is not just on an emergency basisâthat itâs preventative and not just slapping a bandaid on a serious condition for those who are not insured or underinsured. And some asshole with A++ insurance is upset that they MIGHT lose one of their pluses. Guess what, asshole, A+ isnât even a grade. The scale only goes up to A. And there is nothing in other countries which prevents people from also having private insurance. So you can kep your A++ shit and get in to see your plastic surgeon same day for that tuck (or whateverthehell you think you will not get in for three hundred weeks or something. Dude, I have good insurance. I had a procedure I needed because I was in abject pain and the doc didnât want to do it in the office. And heâs like, well, they can anesthetize you at this other clinic 45 miles away, and oh yeah theyâre only there one day a week. So like, you may have to wait a few weeks. Iâm like TA HELL WITH THAT. And they did the surgery under local anesthetic even though I could still feel it. Because Getting in right away is not a promise when you have good insurance, even. It has to do with the availability of providers. And I live in the middle of nowhere. You donât wanna wait with universal insurance? Make sure the providers are evenly distributed. Make it worth providersâ while financially to stay in business and offer good hours, etc. I donât even bloody pay for my insuranceâmy employer pays 100% and I stand behind universal healthcare. If I am out of work due to illness, or the shittastic economy (I was unemployed for quite a while when the economy imploded) I shouldnât be denied preventative care. My lung problems got WAY worse due to lack of preventative care. My mental health, without the right meds, was in the toilet. It actually compromised my ability to get and keep a new job, having so many health problems. Iâm tired of seeing opposition to universal healthcare being shallow âyour taxes will go upâ or âmy service will turn to shit if people who donât even have service get more service than they had beforeâ Itâs all a bunch of selfish whining. I pay for roads. I pay for schools. I pay for wars. I pay for all kinds of things out of my taxes. Paying for someone elseâs health sot hey donât die from something treatable is the LEAST I can do.
Fun story one time I sprained my ankle and actually had to look up whether my insurance was accepted at the hospital closest to me & my mom kept ranting about universal health care while I was trying to read
Like lady we wouldnât have needed to google this shit if we had universal health care & honestly?? sitting there in the middle of January with my leg feeling warm enough to start a fire was not the time to have that discussion

Arrested for not possessing a valid drivers license, held in custody because she couldnât make bail, âfailure to receive adequate medical attentionâ is the reason of her death. On April 26th she was in a car accident and instead of taking her to the hospital they detained her. Died last Tuesday in police custody in the Walker County Jail in Huntsville,Texas. The same jail that killed #SandraBland. No one knows, no one is talking about this, no cause of death has been given, and even her hometown had no idea she was dead.Â

In 2011, Marc Patrick OâLeary was arrested on charges that heâd viciously raped at least three women in the state of Colorado. In his home, police found underwear belonging to the victims, gloves and sneakers matching prints left behind in the victimsâ homes, and a pink camera heâd stolen from one of the women. On the camera, among other things, were photographs of him raping a then-18-year-old girl, who had recently been prosecuted for filing a false police report about the rape.
Because OâLearyâwho is currently serving 327 years in prison for the attacksâfollowed the same MO for each of his victims: Heâd break into his victimâs home, tie her up, rape her, and leave with her clothes and bedsheets. Heâd take photographs of him assaulting the women and would threaten to release them on the internet if they reported the attack to police.
While there would eventually be at least four victims in all (one of whom managed to escape), Marie was his first, and she filed a report with the police that very same day.
Then, three days after she reported the assault, the investigating officersâSgt. Jeffrey Mason and Sgt. Jerry Rittgarnâcalled Marie back to the station. They explained to Marie that they thought she was lying and wanted her to confess. After a long discussion, she wrote: âWhen I went to sleep I dreamed that someone broke in and raped me.â
When the detectives returned, they saw that Marieâs new statement described the rape as a dream, not a lie.
Why didnât you write that you made the story up? Rittgarn asked.
Marie, crying, said she believed the rape really happened. She pounded the table and said she was âpretty positive.â
Pretty positive or actually positive? Rittgarn asked.
Maybe the rape happened and I blacked it out, Marie said.
What do you think should happen to someone who would lie about something like this? Rittgarn asked Marie.
âI should get counseling,â Marie said.
Finally she wrote a second statement, apologizing for making the story up. A few days later, she tried to recant that statement, saying sheâd been coerced.
Rittgarn asked Marie what was going on. Marie said she really had been raped â and began to cry, saying she was having visions of the man on top of her. She wanted to take a lie detector test. Rittgarn told Marie that if she took the test and failed, she would be booked into jail. Whatâs more, he would recommend that Project Ladder pull her housing assistance.
Marie ultimately left the police station without withdrawing her statement.
And then things got worse: She was charged with filing a false report. And to make matters even worse, Marieâwho had grown up in foster care and was living on her own for the first timeâdid not have a lawyer. So she took a plea deal with probation that, among other things, required her to attend a mental health counselor for lying.
In the meantime, OâLeary continued to rape: First a 65-year-old fraternity house mother, then a 59-year-old widow. Then a 26-year-old student. Heâd also tried to attack a 46-year-old artist, who escaped by jumping out a seven-foot window.
After a long and thorough investigation, detailed exhaustively in the Marshall Project report, police zeroed in on OâLeary. Theyâd had no idea Marie was a victim until they found the photos on his camera. One was a close-up of her driverâs license.
The two officers who charged her with lying were never disciplined, though Mason expressed regret for the way he handled the case, telling reporters, âIt wasnât her job to try to convince me. In hindsight, it was my job to get to the bottom of it â and I didnât.â The police station says it follows new guidelines, among them: Investigators need âdefinitive proofâ of lying to accuse the victim of filing a false report, and higher-ups have to approve false report charges.
This trash should lose their jobs. And to think there are still assholes who wonder why women donât report.
This blog 100% supports dark skinned women.
i should make a low-effort cookbook
like you get those âi hate to cook! 101: easy meals for the kitchen novice!â and it still wants you to make a three-cheese spinach casserole
mine would be like
did you know you can put chocolate chips on a spoonful of peanut butter and obtain the perfect snack
did you know if you crack some eggs into your pasta sauce and stir thereâs more protein in it so you can go longer without having to make another goddamn meal
did you know you can mix a cup of cooked rice to any condensed soup instead of water and now you have dinner and breakfast
also put cheese on it
put cheese on fucking everything
and finally hereâs a list of things you can microwave in a short enough time that you wonât walk out of the kitchen, go back to bed, fall asleep for four hours, and totally forget you attempted a lunch
frozen pizza is expensive but! Â biscuits in a can + last dregs of jar of tomato sauce + some shredded mozzarella cheese = EIGHT MINIPIZZAS
dump all your chinese delivery into a hot pan and crack two eggs into it, stir, now it is soft and good
if you add a kraft single to mac and cheese from the box itâs magically more delicious (and if you also add hot sauce then itâs spicy)
nachos: chips + shredded cheese + salsa + rummage in fridge in case thereâs other things? Â and then under the broiler for a minute or two. Â if itâs hot it counts as a meal! Â works good on stale chips.
an incomplete list of vegetables that wonât instantly rot on you: anything frozen, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes (they get wrinkly but u can still eat them), carrots, onionsâŚi throw away a lot of veggies that have gone soft :(
i love parchment paper. Â $4 for a roll but lay it down on ur baking sheet and know youâll never have to scrub cheese or cookie crumbs off it again. Â perfect for cooking with low spoons. Â nothing sticks to it!
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT
also: mug cakes also also: if you cook rice you might as well dump some canned tomatos and canned beans in it. TADA NUTRITIONALLY COMPLETE MEALS in the list of foods that last: apples. apples can last an entire fucking winter. also also also: cottage cheese + bell peppers + crackers = what I ate for dinner for like a year
1. You cook the rice in a pot. No spices, no nothing, just water oil and rice.Â
2. Just before itâs ready, when thereâs about a pinkie fingernailâs worth of water on the top, add in a tablespoon of peanut butter.Â
3. Stir. Cook the rest of the way.Â
4. Itâs a meal! It has carbs and protein, itâs filling, it tastes good and it looks and feels like a legitimate dish, which is great for lifting the spirits a bit.Â
5. If you feel fancy, add a teaspoon of honey or a handful of crushed peanuts.Â
Alt., mix the rice with lentils. Cereal (rice, wheat) + legume (lentils, beans) = complete protein. Most peopleâs bodies will accept that in lieu of animal products.
Since no-one explained how to cook rice: (1) put bit of oil in pot, heat up on medium flame, (2) add 1-1.5 cup rice, mix up and add a bit of salt (you may need to reduce flame), (3) while youâre doing that, boil water in an electric pot, (4) add 2 cup water for each 1 cup rice; reduce flame a few seconds before you do that and mind the steam wonât hit you, (5) cover and set a 20min timer.
Pasta: (1) boil water, lots of water (covered pot goes fast; you can also use an electric pot for a shortcut and bring to a full boil on the stove - experiment), (2) up to 100 gr pasta per 1L water will work, but the more water per pasta the better, (3) reduce flame to medium (light bubbling), add pasta, set time to 10min, (4) check and add time as necessary - you may not need to.
Egg or bean noodled cook faster than pasta - like, half the time.
Easiest pasta sauce: 20-50gr of butter, melt; 1-2tbs lemon juice, homogenize; dump in pasta (and possibly peas, boiled from frozen). Taken 5min or under and will liven up pasta thatâs been sitting in the fridge.
Easiest cream sauce: 1 standard (250ml) cream carton, 1 tsp shredded cheese (keeps well in freezer) or more, 1 tbs cottage cheese, spices to taste. Heat in a small pot on a small-to-medium flame while stirring constantly (if itâs too hot to stick a finger in, itâs too hot). Takes maybe 5-10min. Will keep in fridge up to 1 week.
Rice freezes well. Pasta doesnât. Plain pasta (and most noodles) will last for up to a month in the fridge, though, and just dump it in the pan with some ketchup/tomato paste(+oil + water) and youâre good.
âŚnobody said that dry onion lasts? Dry onion lasts. Fried onion freezes well and keeps forever. So does diced garlic. If you like âem but worried about them going bad/donât always have the time or spoons to deal with âem, there you go.
Fresh bread freezes well. Keep emergency bread in your freezer, sliced. Itâll thaw in the fridge/on the counter overnight, or you can stick a slice as-is in the toaster (just turn it up 1 notch relative to your usual preference).
Potatoes in their peel are the single most nutritious food. (You can, actually, survive on mashed potatoes.) A boiled potato will stay good in the fridge for a couple days. Boil partway (should still somewhat resist a fork), turn over/toaster oven on 150C (350F) or higher while you do the rest, slice potato(s), spread like deck of cards, brush oil over (with the sort of silicone brush one uses for eggs - costs next to nothing and youâll be glad you got it), bit of salt, stick into oven and come back 20-40min later. Will re-heat well.
All of the following are good in eggs, just (1) dump them in the pan before the eggs, (2) the more you fluff up the eggs the betters: cubed semi-boiled potatoes, sliced/cubed tomatoes, tinned garbanzo beans (<-legume), tinned/frozen corn. Tinned and frozen stuff lasts forever. A pre-boiled potato and a couple eggs will save your ass on a cold, miserable morning.
3 shortbread cookies + 2 glasses of milk = 500kcal balanced dinner. Or breakfast.
1 cup cooked pasta + couple fluffed up eggs + shredded cheese (from frozen) to taste, in a stove-top pan or in the oven for ~20min = full meal.
Black lentils, cooked, will last nicely in the fridge - and unlike other legumes, they donât need a pre-soak and only take 20min to cook. ½ bowl + 3 tbs oil + 2 tsp lemon juice + Âź onion = dinner so nutritious you wonât believe it.
Cottage cheese and honey. No really. You only need a couple tsp honey for 250gr cottage tub.
1tbs peanut butter (flat as you can make it) + 3 tbs soy + 2 tbs maple/honey + 1 tsp vinegar = marinade for ~500gr of whatever. Takes ~5min to mix, 20min-2hr to soak, 5-10min to fry (non-stick pan and you donât need oil). This + pot of rice (<-make while chicken/meat soaks) = lunch for a week. (Or dinner, if dinnerâs your main meal.)
A tin of mayonnaise will last for months in the fridge. Hardboiled eggs last a nice while, too. 3 hardboiled eggs, chopped + 1tbs mayo + 1/3 onion chopped = 5min of work and egg salad for a few highly nutritious meals.
Ever make yourself hot chocolate? Make it with milk instead of water, for fuckâs sake. A large cup of hot chocolate is a legit small meal.
Buy broccoli and green beans frozen. For a couple dollars you can get a big enough bag of either to get at least 8-10 servings out of it and it keep for at least 6 months if you keep the bag closed. Buy a jar of chopped garlic in olive oil as well. Thatâll keep in your fridge for months and adding a little bit to a handful of broccoli or green beans and sauteing(lightly browning them in a pan or pot on the stove) them together until everything is warm is a cheap, easy way to have a flavorful snack or meal.Â
Also, ramen, drop an egg and a handful of some kind of frozen veggie(the previously mentioned ones or even some mixed carrots and peas) it adds a lot of nutritional value to your ramen, makes it so much more filling, and makes it have way better flavor than plain ramen.Â
Buy a jar of Better than Bouillon. Amazon has them for as cheep as $2.99 a jar and one jar has enough in it to make a couple gallons of broth. Just one teaspoon of this stuff added to 1 cup of water will give you a deliciously broth for soup. Pick your flavor and drop whatever veggies or noodles youâve got leftover in the fridge and youâve got dinner. Itâs also great to add to the water youâre cooking your rice in to give it some flavor as well.Â
Donât buy boxed Kraft mac and cheese. It may seem like an easy approach but there is a cheaper approach. A 3 lb bag of macaroni noodles is only a couple dollars and you can get a 1 lb bag of the powdered cheese just like in Kraft for $10 on Amazon. I bought a bag of cheese powder that size and it lasted me more than a year and I made mac and cheese once a week. You can also mix it with milk and broccoli and youâve got a great dinner of broccoli cheese soup.Â
My biggest tip for saving money on food is to make things that will freeze well. Say you make a pot of spaghetti. You could get 5 or 6 servings out of a full pot easily, if not more, but youâll get tired of spaghetti before itâs gone. Stick servings in plastic baggies(which are fine to rinse and reuse!) and freeze them! Then youâll be able to take out just the amount to eat for a meal and have some back up meals for when youâre loaded down with work, homework, etc and have no time to make a meal.Â
I⌠Really, reeeeally wish Iâd seen this about 5 months ago. So rebloggin now so I can find it again.
