crazy that hannibal rebounded with someone who looks almost identical to will, murdered him, skinned him, deboned him, then carved and folded his flesh into the shape of a human heart and mounted it in front of the altar of a church for will, who by the way, built a whole boat and sailed across the atlantic, knowing exactly where to find hannibal

I know we always talk about Hannibal’s honestly very pathetic rebound with Antony, who looks very similar and shares the same moral grayness, dry wit, and sly attraction to Hannibal that peeked through at times with Will. But what I don’t see talked about enough is the fact that Hannibal and Will were both shown to consistently have sexual and romantic relationships with people who shared the same traits as each other. Yes, Alana was an alibi for Hannibal first and foremost, but she has a sense of wry humor, a no-nonsense attitude, an easy appreciation for Hannibal’s cooking and blue eyes and dark hair. She and Antony both have a lot of not-so-coincidental Will-adjacent traits, not to mention the fact that Hannibal immediately started talking about Will after sex with her, receiving a glare for good reason.

But Will also does the same thing!! Margot, like Hannibal, has a softer, more welcoming demeanor on the outside as well as obviously more manipulative tendencies and a good idea of what she wants. She’s a dark blonde with a rounder face and all the trappings and graces of high society. Will even envisions Hannibal as the stagman while in bed with her to climax. Molly, too, is an example of this— she’s a dark blonde with curvier features, she fulfills a more domestic role by cooking and keeping house and even advises Will about his FBI work and offers her support. She was likely just as profoundly lonely and aching as he was without Hannibal and vice versa when they met, recently widowed.

Wally, though, is an interesting piece of this. Hannibal insults Will’s “ready-made family”, but this is the same thing he tried to do with Abigail. Wally has dark hair, he seems quieter, self-assured and even wary of Will at times. Perhaps he reminded Will of a combination of Abigail and the dead child of his that Margot could’ve had. Will and Abigail actually had a lot of similar features, too.

Will and Hannibal had such an intense, life-and-self-altering connection that it made moving on impossible, even after all the betrayals and violence. Especially after all the betrayals and violence. Even when they were both battling their pull to each other or were cut off from each other, they still sought out the warped likenesses of each other through others, unable to shake the mental associations, unable to go without at least a living reminder, even if it hurt. Knowing and seeing each other made Hannibal and Will aware of the damaged, starving parts of themselves that they will only ever be able to sate through and with each other.
