“You probably wouldn’t understand any of it, anyway. It’s not a big deal, I did this shit like this when I was fifteen.”
“The hell? I’m guessing you’re skilled in the technology field and all that, then? I wish. I find everything breaking on me quite often, actually.”
“I live to remind you of our dear country,” she smirked, speaking through a mouthful of apple. “And, thanks, man. You know, I wanted to be a singer once. What did you wanna be when you grew up?”
“Thank you for the effort, but I’m afraid I’m a walking reminder of that,” he mumbled, debating dashing before this could get any worse. “Did you? Me?” Simba asked, shoulders raised. “I don’t know. Anything but a murderous future king, that’s for sure.”
“Anyone in the mood for an apple?” Grim asked, carrying a tray of suspicious-looking candy apples. “They’re only a dollar a pop and to die for. Seriously, you won’t regret it.”
“I’m not one for apples, but thanks for the offer,” Simba muttered, forcing a quivered smile. “I wish you luck with that, though. They look good.”
‘Ha,that forest wasn’t scary at all. You know,except for the bats and weird moving trees.”
“You went into the forest? What--we have a forest? Is that even allowed?”
“What? Yeah, your phone might be a mess, but of course I can fix it. It’s not rocket science.”
“Wait, you can? Really? How the heck would you fix--I’m not even going to ask. You’re a life saver, literally.”
Shenzi looked up from her apple, mouth twitching as she recognised the all too familiar silhouette of Prince Simba. Cocking her head to the side, she ignored her meticulous peeling and took an almighty bite from the apple, the sound loud like a crack. “Feeling nostalgic?”
The girl’s voice startled Simba, and although he’d been expecting a greeting from her, he’d hoped he could sneak by without notice. Still, he forced a smile, almost cringing at the sound of the apple’s surface broken. “You could say. Nice, um...nice tune you’ve got there."
“Seriously, what the hell did you do to your phone? I feel sorry for it.”
“I have...no idea. Absolutely none. I just...are you sure you can’t fix it? No one can?”
Wearing the fifth year’s shirt that she stole, Shenzi peeled an apple with a knife as she hummed. “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts, dee-dee-dee-dee. There they are all standing in a row, bom-bom-bom…”
Eyeing the two sizes too large shirt the girl donned, Simba sped up his pace as he approached her, hoping his newfound enemy wouldn’t notice his thundering footsteps. Still, he mindlessly hummed to the all too familiar tune, his presence growing senselessly more obvious as he passed.
Shenzi looked down at the familiar child. “Oh. It’s you.—well, how would you describe it, then, Little Princess?”
“Princess?” she echoed, quite familiar with the title, but unsure of how the stranger had known. “You know who I am? I think it’s nice, but not...rich, I don’t think. Maybe it’s just me.”
“Don’t turn out like him, okay? Have fun and joke around sometimes. I did, yeah, but don’t tell your dad I told you any of this—he’ll think I’m a bad influence. I wasn’t exactly a rule-follower. Oh! Talk to lots of people, though, like in your year and just whoever you get along with.”
“I’ll try, Aunt Kiara, I’ll try. Your secret’s safe with me. You weren’t? Sometimes I wonder how I’m related to him more than you. What’d grandma think about that? I mean, it is two years away, but I’m already really excited about coming, I’ve got to say.”
“No, he was being serious, but that’s only because he never did anything while he was here. Studying’s good, but not if it’s the only thing you do. Besides, I had lots of fun here.”
“When is he not being serious, though? Am I surprised? Not really. Did you? Well, then, you need to tell me all the fun things I need to get myself into when I get here.”
“Ugh, D’Isigny. It’s as…rich as I remember.”
“Rich? That’s an...interesting adjective choice you’ve got there.”
“Well, isn’t this view a sight for sore eyes? It’s even prettier than I remember.”
"You know, I think Dad was joking when he said this was the most boring place on the face of the entire planet.”
Zira nodded, looking back down to her phone though still listening. It had been a good day, good enough for her to be indifferent to the fact she hated him. “then I see no problem. Who was the girl she thought you were ‘flirting with’? Sometimes it’s the girl.”
To be honest, he had no idea who the girl was--she’d left before he could even catch her name. Not that he wanted it now, anyway. “I have no idea,” Simba confessed, stomach tightening at her questions. “She, um--had somewhere to go, I guess. Apparently. Somewhere better than here.”
“Don’t worry, it’s clear you weren’t flirting.” Audrey gave him an easy grin before sitting down in the spot the girl had left open. “Maybe she’s just one of those that thinks the whole world wants to get the flirty on with her.”
“Oh, thank God,” he breathed, eyes widening slightly to find the girl beside him. “Some people are like that, I guess. Not me, evidently. I’m, um--it’s Simba, by the way. Thanks for the confirmation.”
Kiara stifled a laugh as she passed by her brother, tossing him a glance. “Sometimes I fear you really are hopeless,” she sighed, amusement dancing in her eyes. “What did you even say to her?”
“I am hopeless,” he agreed, hiding his head in his hands. “I’m not even sure. I just sort of sat down next to her and started talking and...she took it as that. I don’t know. Mom’s going to actually kill me when she finds out I can’t talk to anyone of the opposite gender except you and Nala without this happening.”
“If I’m honest with you it looked more like you were trying to hard so it wasn’t believable. Then again most girls like to think they’re the center of attention so probably why she got that idea.”
“That’s what I was going for,” Simba affirmed, letting out an exasperated sigh before returning to his paper. “Hey...you’re in my classes, aren’t you? Unless I’m imagining things. This is about the most annoying thing I’ve ever done. Oh--wait, just kidding. You look like a girl in them. Sorry. Right. Can’t even remember that at this point.”
