Here’s my take on the white swan and black swan dancers from Swan Lake. I read up on the history of Black dancers a few years back. I learned that Black ballet dancers often colored their pointe shoes brown with dye, makeup, etc. because pale toned pointe shoes made with White dancers in mind were the only ones on the market. It was important to me for these illustrations to depict Black ballerinas with pointe shoes matching their skin tones.

None of the people complaining that there's no lesbian Heated Rivalry actually want a lesbian Heated Rivalry, because if a lesbian Heated Rivalry actually existed, straight cis men would like it and think it was hot, and these people cannot fucking stand the idea of straight cis men thinking lesbian media is hot, to the point that they would literally rather horny lesbian media not exist at all than give one single straight cis man a boner.

I strongly disagree with this take. I don’t like that it shifts blame onto sapphic audiences that just want good representation instead of addressing the actual reason why sapphic shows often don’t succeed monetarily / get cancelled.

WLW shows, as we all know, unfortunately don’t garner the same core straight fanbase as MLM shows with large straight women audiences do. The primary audience for sapphic media tends to be mostly sapphic women.

In the year of our lord and savior, 2026, there is simply not the same cultural intrigue from straight people to uncover the “secret lives of lesbians”. I believe this what allowed older shows like the original L-Word and Orange Is The New Black to succeed. Social media was in its infancy and lesbian life was less widely discussed. Non-sapphic audiences watched out of curiosity.

Even straight men today who could be titillated by the interactions of two women on screen usually just seek out p*rn for that purpose because they’d rather skip straight to the objectification of female bodies than sit through a narrative where women are the subject of the story rather than passive objects to be well…objectified. 😬

Straight men that fet*shize sapphic women are usually not actually interested in watching media that frames things from the point of view of a sapphic person. They’re honestly not interested in what it’s like to be a girl who loves another girl in the same way that the female audiences of shows like Heated Rivalry are interested in the concept of men loving men. Straight male-targeted lesbian p*rn is perfect for these guys because it skips over the part where the man watching would actually have to identify with a woman character and her thoughts and feelings.

Don’t believe me? I was actually told this by a straight guy as he explained the viewing habits and mindset of men he knows.

Tbh, even if I found out some guys were getting off to my favorite lesbian show, I honestly wouldn’t care because I can tune them out and enjoy the show on my own time. I think most of us agree that this is way better than not having any television representation at all.

The fact of the matter is that straight dudes watching the sapphic show = more viewership in the same way that straight girls watching the gay men show does. Even if they’re watching it for the wrong reasons, more viewership is what helps these shows to get renewed for more seasons.

Seems like a small price to pay in my opinion.

As a lesbian who’s used to being objectified by men irl. Some dudes on the internet saying gross things is inconsequential to me.

Inktober Day 8: Reckless

I wanted to choose something amusing for this Inktober prompt. Many ideas came to mind from reckless driving, to subway surfing, to football fans climbing poles after the game.

Ultimately I chose to draw this rascally kid hopping a fence into private property.

The penciling was done traditionally in my sketchbook and the inking was done digitally.

Inktober Day 6: Pierce

As an artist, I challenge myself to think of creative ways to interpret the Inktober prompts.

Sometimes I do inktober illustrations using my ocs. Rather than drawing a simple sword or dagger, I chose to draw a syringe piercing Frankie. In my story Frankie has the ability to regenerate after any injury. Her blood is thought to be magical and is highly sought after.

I’ve decided I’m only doing the #inktober prompts that speak to me. I’m not 16 anymore I don’t have endless amounts of free time to do a drawing each day… but anyway I liked this prompt.

So here’s a lonely little siren drifting through the sea. Now if only someone would risk life and limb to dive down and comfort her.

what do artists mean when they say "don't take inspiration from my art"? i figure it's to prevent people obviously ripping off their art but, what's the problem with someone being loosely inspired by you? someone wanting to play around with your ideas in an otherwise unrelated context? that just sounds like an incredibly overprotective thing to say about your work. it's cool to be legally distinct

Full stop it's an ego thing. I have seen this more so from artists that rely heavily on commissions, because if another artists creates a similiar style then that's monetary competition. Also young people who got too use to being the only person in their class that could draw well.

My drawing process often involves studying photo references, especially to learn how to draw tools, clothing items, animals, and other things I’ve never drawn before. For this digital art piece, I studied various significant objects from Yemeni culture in order to make this Yemeni shepherd boy character.

—My oc Frankincense, the reanimated. Frankie is the daughter of a jinn mother and human father. Never quite fitting in with humans or civilians, Frankie opts for a nomadic lifestyle. She’s been fending for herself for as long as she can remember. Frankie makes her living as a professional thief and is one of the most feared criminals in the red desert.
