I've recently been making a lot of custom desktop icons to fit the Windows 95/98/2000-era aesthetic. I've always had a hyperfixation for that kind of retro look, so I try to style my desktop and any web browsers I use with that aesthetic in mind. Something about the process is very satisfying.

I just finished this one, and I'm pretty proud of it.

I try to stay faithful to the style of icons from that era, so that means sticking to a 16-slot palette and smashing together parts from actual old Windows icons. Not sure if I've been successful in hunting all of the old .ico files down, but I have a lot of old icons to work with when it comes to imitating the style.

Been thinking of starting custom icon commissions, since these don't take too long to do. I could charge, like, 5 bucks a pop and have ten of them done in a day. Wait holy shit I might be onto something here.

Anyway if anyone's interested I can set up a ko-fi page? Still have to look into usage rights and all that shit but feel free to inquire, I guess.

I 100% think categorizing the Gadsden flag as a racist symbol is a bad fucking idea. It's a symbol that predates the American identity, a symbol of civilian militias. It quite literally stands for community defense and unity. It follows the Join, Or Die comic that called for the colonies to unify in order to establish their own rule. The rattlesnake is an animal that is not aggressive and only acts in self defense, with a warning, only demanding its boundaries respected. The Gadsden flag is something that has been used by every fucking corner of American politics since its inception.

Again; it is literally a symbol of community defense. It is a symbol with a very specific meaning, very specific language. It is the foundation of American identity, for better or worse, and it is the foundation of the ideals of rebellion and self-governance and liberty that everything in our culture is ostensibly based upon. Making all these edits of it with various characters and symbols squishing the snake is just communicating "fuck you I am a tyrant" within the language of the symbolism. It's just fucking dumb. And it's fucking dumb to not exploit the nationally-foundational language of the symbol for your own purposes. That's literally why it's so popular with fascists! nothing about it is aligned with fascist ideology! It's just a piece of cheese wrapped around a fascist pill to convince more dumb guys to become fascists without realizing it! Fascism is aesthetic! It not only propagates through symbols, it IS symbols! To surrender the symbol altogether it is to empower fascism! It is to surrender the pre-built American ideals of rebellion and self-protection and community defense to fascists!

Optics are important! Symbols are a legitimate language! They are a foot in the door! Saying you understand this symbol and what it means is a bridge to people who otherwise wouldn't listen to you! You need to exploit these inroads! This is how politics work! Stop being fucking dumb!

The swastika also needs to be taken from fascists straight up. I don't give a fuck what anyone says. It's the biggest attraction that started the present wave of fascism. People wanted to be an edgy, evil guy. They wanted the arcane mystique of the Nazis, the terrible stormcloud that lingers over such symbols. The Hakenkreuz is itself a seed of fascist ideology; fascism replicates through aesthetic. The fascist context of the symbol simply needs to be eradicated. Forgotten and overwritten with the swastikas and fylfots of the last several thousand years of human history. The Nazis need to be reduced to a footnote in history, not a force so powerful and evil that they still dictate how we build our cultures from beyond the grave. That is what allows fascism its power.

This has been a thing people have been doing since at least the 90s, and it ebbs and flows, but its gotten so so so so so bad over the last couple years. It's absolutely downstream from a boom in "punk" being an aesthetic-commodity on tiktok. That likely being since, like everything else that was commercially successful 20-30 years ago, there's a HUGE marketing boom for so-called "skate punk" and pop-punk. Festivals, clothing, new music, etc for bands that everybody stopped caring about like 15 years ago. So now you have people going into any online space discussing punk rock and insisting 00's nu-metal and walking your dog and supporting small businesses are punk as fuckkkkk. Literal children's books are being written on the premise of "being kind is punk." Its a horrible, horrible time to like fasty-nasty underground suicidal shithead geetar music. Especially since """hardcore""" has recently had such a big moment which thankfully seems to be fading.
