Tried to draw him for. reasons..
Can you find me? 🌑🩸
I took a detour in my drawing to make him even more sad (now back to finishing the actual one)
bro looks skyward as if there is any peace left for him above the blood

Names...
It's funny how some names survive when others don't.
I had a strong vision for this one.
I haven’t drawn gore in forever but this was really fun practice for some upcoming art
I've had enough of Eel monster Simon. With all the friendliness in the world.
Where is the SHADOWMAN in everybody's fics ??? Y'all forgot about his existence. This is what the Eye predicted Simon's future form to be if the tree hadn't mutated. THIS IS CANON MONSTER SIMON.
STOP BEING COWARDS. 🗣📢
OP your art is wonderful and deserves a gold star.
Hallucinations and Foreshadowing--the SM-8 and the Blood Eel
Towards the the end of Iron Lung, Simon is hallucinating and coughing up blood, and really just not in good shape. At timecode 1:42:17, he takes a picture that looks like the blood eel on its side with all its teeth just absolutely barred.
We get this amazing camera work with his head tilting to the side as he tries to understand what he is seeing.
Then Simon takes the photo again, and it is now clearly the remains of the SM-8.
When you look at the two pictures side by side, there is a lot of visual overlap.
Look at the broken metal in the picture on the right and how it is so similar to the teeth of the monster in the left picture. The darker, negative space on the left of both pictures is very deliberately made to look much the same.
What we have here is really clever visual storytelling and foreshadowing. Simon sees the SM-8 submarine as a monster for a moment, which allows us to understand how damaged and ill he is. Especially when juxtaposed with the shot of his head tilting mechanically to the side, we're getting a good idea of the visual distortions he is seeing.
But we also get foreshadowing of the SM-13 turning into a monstrous thing that attacks him later on. The eel screams at him that "Your ship is alive, and it will never let you go!" These two photos give us a hint of that eventually happening. (It can also be foreshadowing the SM-14 being destroyed by the eel shortly after this when Ava comes down in a failed attempt to rescue Simon. I find that less convincing, but it is food for thought. And, of course, it can be foreshadowing of the SM-13 meeting this same fate once the eel gets hold of him.)
This paired with the fact that the SM-13--and we can assume the SM-8 since they were able to repurpose its instruction manual for the SM-13--was designed to have attributes like the eel including vents on the side like gills, and broken metal near the porthole reminiscent of teeth, is smart, carefully conceived movie magic. The submarine is just as dangerous to him as the eel when you pull back and look at the scenario, which makes it fitting for it to have this design.
You can read about those design choices on Molly Brown's website, Deadlymelodic. It's very worth looking at. She's insanely talented.
There are so many instances of wonderful visual storytelling in Iron Lung, and every time I take a look at it, I see something new to appreciate. I can't believe how terribly clever these two photos are. It could have been handled in an abrupt, cliche jump scare like in many horror movies. Those scenes where there is a shadowy figure in the room, then lightning flashes and it's just a coatrack, something like that. But Markiplier gave us this scene with subtle terror and none of that dreck. Big preesh, big preesh.

Look, tits aside, this man is DIRTY.
Like, black patches starting to build up on skin type dirty. Dude hasn't showered in several weeks.
I know Simon just got back from prison, but that aside, the standard level of grime on people must fucking suck. The COI folk were certainly cleaner than him. It must be pretty bad in a scarcity crisis like this.
But, aside from being freshly banged-up, I actually don't see any major scars (that line looks like an impact with the wall/hot pipe. We know the Iron Lung's walls were hot enough to boil condensation drops).
Since we know about how effective the Butcher was... yeah that checks out. I seriously doubt he's been overpowered often, considering literally everyone else is in some kind of calorie deficit (supposedly), and Simon is massive. Any time I try to explain that, it doesn't point to anything good:
Simon either stole enough food to stave off withering away in jail (which means he was playing dirty in there... I don't put that past him)
The COI was genuinely feeding him (I don't buy it)
He was eating good on Eden (equally as frightening to think about), and didn't spend much time in COI custody before getting put in the Iron Lung
Paraphrasing Markiplier, he wanted Simon to have a "rugged survivor build", hence getting into the best shape of his life for the role.
That also implies Simon was lowkey in the best shape of his life for this expedition (or possibly Filament's Battle). Dude was absolutely hogging the gym in prison. I laugh at the thought of Simon walking in there and everyone else getting up to leave immediately because they don't want to deal with his erratic bullshit LOL
EDIT: I've been corrected multiple times, so I'm putting this down for self-reference. He's probably jacked because the COI used him for labor/work. Directly implied by "how many times are you going to use me before you let me go?"
I assume, then, that Simon had been doing risky stuff for them for a hot minute, and the SM-13 was just more of the same. Of course it wouldn't have clicked in his head this was an execution at first. He probably "came back" from several various excursions in the past. Most likely, less extreme as this.
Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach as Simon 'The Convict' Iron Lung (2026) dir. Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach
I got inspired to color grade my copy of Iron Lung to have a 70s film vibe! Watching it with everything neutralized and less green has my eyes relaxing at last. 😵💫
(Markiplier please don't come to my house I'm not distributing it I'd never diss you like that)
Also, I did some stylization. Like the cherenkov blue lights, real punchy reds, and a soft off-white terminal. I gave it a little grain, some bloom, toned the oranges down, and adjusted the shadows to "true black." There's also a smidgen of chromatic aberration in there as a treat!
I want this guy to be a total lunatic
“Hello everyone, my name is Markiplier-“ or what I think he would say ‘cause I never watched his videos on YouTube, but I for sure loved his movie!
Close up
Oh fuck, oh god. I'm scraping Iron Lung again looking for details. I haven't even named or added these files to the master reference yet, I just had to throw this down immediately.
The millisecond Simon believes for sure that he's going to die, his eyes go straight down to his Eden pendant. Not to the side; not to the monster; not to the burning hull.
The pendant.
Simon's last thought, what Simon believed would be his last thought, was
of home.
Fuck you, Markiplier. I'm sending an invoice for emotional damages to your manager. /j
Grace gets too excited about the science behind Simon’s mutations and forgets what personal space is

something that's getting me right now is just how hopeful simon is. he goes down in the sm-13 in the hope that he'd be set free, he keeps trying to negotiate them bringing him back, he hopes he'll find a way out, etc.
even when he's talking about the quiet rapture, it's a hopeful outlook, that everyone else is still there and wondering where the space stations went
and the bit that rips out my heart is when he gets contact back with ava and asks to get brought back up. he wants and hopes so bad that they will, but everything in his body language is screaming that he knows they're gonna say no, even as he's trying to throw out a different reason why they should while still bracing for that no. and still crumpling in when he hears it
the end too, the hope that the black box will have something on it even if he's never going to leave the bottom of the ocean
simon, even after everything, is still fueled by hope
