the janitor scrubbing this shit off the wall:
Honestly if JKR had just stayed in her lane she would be remembered and thought of fondly as someone who wrote one of, if not the most culturally influential book series of the century and known as the only person who’s gone from a billionaire to a millionaire for donating so much to charity
But nOOOOOOOOOOOO WE CANT HAVE THAT
It’s exceptionally depressing because, also, in many ways JK Rowling saved the fantasy genre in a BIG way. The reason the market is now so saturated with novels that are very much like and inspired by Harry Potter–just as her influencer J.R.R. Tolkien was the developer of modern fantasy as we now know it… like I’m only just now starting to understand the ripples of her works’ legacy. Amazing children’s fantasy authors like Diana Wynne Jones weren’t even being printed anymore but because of the success of HP, they were brought back on the shelves. She is insanely–INSANEELLYYYY–influential. Also she should be in her golden phase of just sitting back and letting people go over her Harry Potter series with a fine tooth comb and pointing out her 1. Insane gift for plotting, 2. Her literary components where she is writing literary fantasy just like Tolkien often did–deep symbolism, foreshadowing echoes are are bewilderingly intricate and from the get-go of her novels, 3. an undeniably huge tale that will be in the not-forgotten echelons along with Narnia, Oz, LOTR, etc…. it’s just flat out brilliant.
BUT instead of sitting back and chillin’ she’s out here on these streets embarrassing herself and it’s frustrating. Her undeniable success is a huge deal in an industry that often tries to devalue women’s work, and instead of celebrating this, we’re all at home cringing.
Also, the rags-to-riches story of a poor, single mother with suicide ideation using writing to cope with her depression and getting her story rejected by 12 different publishers before it becoming a worldwide culturally influential sensation?
It’s unbelievably inspiring and made her one hell of a role model.
It makes me so frustrated just thinking about it.
