Dolly’s absolute amazingness aside… She is who she wants to be, and shows herself as she wants to. Anyone who sees her as a joke is in fact the joke themselves and I’m quite happy to laugh at them.

She purposely does this, y’all. I have been fascinated by her for years and she has purposely crafted this and people reacting like this is her intention. She is a master. Like, how many country artists can get away with openly being a queer ally and funding AIDS research and COVID research and all this other stuff and yet still I defy you to find a person–no matter how conservative–who will say anything worse than ‘she’s trashy’ to you–but it can’t even insult her because she says she’s trashy!! Being from the same town where she grew up, I can assure you she is our QUEEN, and I don’t say this lightly. Any local you meet will swear up and down that she’s “kin” to us somehow. The road in front of my high school is “Dolly Parton Parkway” really and truly.

You know about her from the time you’re born because her (now expanded) Imagination Library provides 1 book per month from birth to age 5. She started this because she was made aware of the despairity of children who have been read to versus who have not before they even begin Kindergarten. So she started the program in 1995 focusing on the children of Sevier County. I still have all my books!

She provides a $15,000 scholarship every year to each of our 6 county high schools to 1 deserving senior.

Until recently, she came “home” once a year to be the grand marshal in a parade held annually in her honor in Pigeon Forge, as well as smaller parades inside her theme park where she invited the marching band from her alma mater, Sevier County High School, to lead her through playing 9 to 5. I had the opportunity to meet her 5 or so times by doing these parades.

There are parts of my hometown (and current home) that are considerably less than progressive. This was a major reason I chose to return home to teach in the same district I once attended. I’d like to think I’m encouraging my students to be like our beloved Dolly. To embrace each other’s differences, respect each other as you would your family, and never settle for anything that doesn’t “sparkle.”

hahahahaha, i can’t stop thinking about a hypothetical film adaptation of midnight sun where poor 30-something year old man rpattz once again has to don the hair gel and body glitter and play an immortal high schooler, but now that he’s been in, like, damsel and the lighthouse, he absolutely CANNOT and WILL NOT dial down his terrifying manic energy and fathomless eyes
