Did you know that Afghanistan has stronger laws against child marriage (including a minimum age of 15 no matter the circumstances) than 17 states in the US currently have? These states not only do not have a minimum age to marry under certain circumstances, but 172,000+ minors were married to adults in the past 15 years. We are talking children as young as 10 being *legally* married to adults in their 20s, 30s, and even 60s in a so-called "1st world country" which prides itself on being one of the greatest countries in the world. In the past 4 years, over 16,000 minors were married in Florida alone. Moreover, in some of these states (such as Massachusetts) being married does not even automatically emancipate the child or increase their legal rights meaning they may not have the rights to legally get a divorce, file for a restraining order, or enter a shelter to escape abuse. This leaves children "locked" into marriages they cannot escape for years until they are old enough to access these *adult* services. Sometimes these marriages are between a child and their abuser as a legal loophole to avoiding prosecution for sexual crimes already committed against that child. This is unbelievable. And tragic. And has to stop. Seriously, America, get your shit together. #banchildmarriage

The 17 states are: California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
