Inverted AU Character Introductions !!!
|| In this AU Deku never wanted to be a hero, nor did he ever want a Quirk. He grew up unloved in an orphanage where he met one of its sponsors, Yagi Toshinori, also known as number 1 hero All Might, who insisted he was meant to inherit his Quirk One for All. He didn't even want it, but All Might said if he did it he'd get out of the orphanage and get an education at a good school, UA, which would help him get a bright future as a hero. Now Deku may not seem like he cares about much, but all he really wants is a life outside of the old decrepit orphanage he was raised in. And so, he agreed.
Deku in this AU struggles with empathy, so the whole "saving lives" thing that comes with hero training was rather difficult. He's far too cynical and would definitely gamble someone's life if it meant saving his own. Throughout his training he often has a voice in the back of his mind saying, "what if this person isn't worth saving? What if they hurt other people? Would they really save me if the cards were dealt differently?"
When it comes to Kacchan, he definitely has some sort of bond with him, but instead of it being admiration, it's more toxic and co-dependent than that. Deku grew up being the underdog, the black sheep, the weakling. And so he gets a large ego boost by simply being around someone so pathetic. But he makes sure people, including Katsuki, know that he is there because he is wanted, not needed, and somehow that makes his ego feel a little safer and more secure.
I said before I wanted to keep one thing from the canon versions in these alternate counterparts, and Deku's relationship with Bakugou is one of them. I just made it much darker to fit the theme.
|| Bakugou in this AU is a weak, small, frail person. The only thing that gives him a shot at UA is his incredibly powerful Quirk. Deku often makes a note that without it, he'd be nothing. Bakugou honestly isn't proud of his Quirk at all. It's loud and obnoxious while he is meek and fragile. Unlike Deku though his dream was to be a hero, and to save those who were weak like him.
Though the one thing he has in common with his canon counterpart is his bravery. His only driving force is the thought that someone could be in danger. This is what gives him the motivation to fight back and be strong. Deku feels rather intimidated by this even if he doesn't show it. So he makes an effort to drill the idea in Kacchan's brain that he is still weak, calling him a wimp and such.
|| This version of Uraraka has a temper, she's spoiled, and sees herself as above other people. Her family owns a large construction company so they are very wealthy. Though this company has been facing allegations of abuse from its workers, who say they are being mistreated in the workplace and are not being paid fairly. It was the CEO of the company, Ochaco's father, who told her that these people are below them. However, she does know that these people are helpful cogs that keep society moving. She believes that you must be a useful tool to society to be of any worth, which is one of the reasons so clashes so heavily with Deku. Seeing as he is a poor Quirkless orphan, Ochaco feels that he is worthless to society.
However, there is still some hope for her. If you've seen my latest comic you'll know that she seems to have a soft spot for Bakugou despite not knowing anything about him. Deku says she simply wants him as a lap dog or a passion project, when actually, Uraraka has a sort of empathy for weak people. She believes that the strong should help the weak. But she sees two types of weak people: weak people who have the potential to be useful, and weak people who don't, and most often pretend to be strong. She sees Katsuki as the former and Deku as the latter, which solidifies her impressions of them.
|| Now out of all of them, Todoroki is the one I haven't thought much about yet. I know he's annoying, he's a tease, he's very happy go lucky and he likes to torment Katsuki for fun. His whole family drama is a little hard for me to navigate and form into an inverted version for this AU, so give me some time. For now, think of him like Najimi from Komi Can't Communicate or Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs. He's the same kind of annoying.
