The Legends (2019) Full Review
My review of the first 30 episodes of the drama can be found here.Ā
This is more of a rant than a review. The drama should have wrapped up at episode 35. I was able to tolerate it up to episode 42 when the wedding was, but by episode 48 itās a total mess.Ā
If only this scene was as epic as the picture makes it look. But alas, this was just a dream sequence, and by this point in the finale, I was already bored and scrolling through instagram on my phone. If only they really did have a love-hate relationship. But this is an angst-free drama.Ā
Inconsistent character arcs
The FL and ML have become incredibly weak, both in terms of abilities and personality. The changes just donāt make sense for their characters.Ā
Zhao yao is no longer the badass she once was, and Iām actually fine with that. Moving away from her demoness persona is part of her growth. BUT, she no longer has a goal in the drama (except when she finds out that Mo Qing has an inner demon. Then, her goal becomes finding a way to expel the demon). But in the last quarter of the drama, she doesnāt really do anything of importance. She lost her sword, but she doesnāt actively go and find it. Instead, Mo Qing and Jiang Wu are the ones who took initiative to hunt it down for her. And when Lin Zi Yu got away with it, she doesnāt bother thinking about finding her sword again?? I mean girl, you lost your sword. Your only weapon. Why is that not at the top of your list of priorities? Is this the same FL who had risked it all for the Wan Jun sword?Ā
(I miss the demoness)
Her tolerance level for things that annoy her is just so out of character. Zhao yao used to be someone who always fought back against anything she didnāt like. But when it comes to Jiang Wu, she seems to have unlimited tolerance for him. Yes, he saved her, but owing him does not mean letting him be a menace. Like when Jiang Wu sucked the life energy out of Ah Dai. All she did was try to restrain Mo Qing from attacking Jiang Wu, but she didnāt spring forward to prevent Jiang Wu from killing Ah Dai. I mean, the cause of Mo Qingās rage was Ah Dai dying. Shouldnāt you go address the root of the problem? Instead, she just sits and stares and lets Jiang Wu kill Ah Dai instead of doing something. And then thereās the scene in the library when sheās asleep, but Mo Qing is wrestling with his inner demon, and then the Wan Jun sword kills the 2 guards on duty. She just sleeps through the entire thing. Wasnāt she once the most feared conqueror/demoness? Isnāt she a warrior? How can your senses not be alert when thereās so much ruckus around you? Someone on MDL said that she became a glorified baby sitter for the ML, and while I donāt agree that itās as extreme as that, I can see their point. All that Zhao yao does after the wedding is try to reign in Mo Qing to prevent him from going into full-on demon mode. She holds him back, tries to calm him and soothe him, rinse and repeat.
Speaking of Mo Qing, his current personality is just rage and jealousy. At first, it was kinda endearing seeing him jealous, but soon his entire arc was just about him being consumed by jealousy. The writers try to justify it by saying that heās always had low self-esteem and been unconfident about himself because of his upbringing, and the growing demon energy inside him is exacerbating these thoughts, making him more unlike himself, but youāre telling me that everything that he and Zhao yao had gone through together was all for naught? This would have made sense 5 years ago, but weāve seen that he has greatly matured since becoming sect leader. During the earlier episodes, he was able to see right through Zhao yaoās mask. He teased her, flirted with her, scolded her, and basically proved heās her equal in every way, and he did it all with easy confidence. And now suddenly, all of that growth reverses, and heās insecure and sensitive again. This character progression just doesnāt make sense in the context of everything thatās happened. I would have loved to have seen more of the introverted and unconfident Mo Qing at the beginning of the drama. But instead, we only got a handful of scenes before that part of his character arc was cut short and we skip ahead 5 years later and then another 5 years later to when heās the sect leader. There was honestly no purpose for Mo Qingās suffering. He just suffered for the sake of suffering. In other xianxia dramas, characters suffered for a purpose. It was a price they had to pay in order to protect someone they love. But this suffering is just pointless. It does nothing for this character arc. And they kept replaying the same montage of him sleeping on the dragon. As if itās not already clear from the last 20 episodes that heās being haunted by his fatherās demon.Ā
Villains and supporting characters
I didnāt really care for the villains? Luo Mingxuan is still alive, but doesnāt do anything until the last 5 episodes. I eyeroll whenever Lin Zi Yu is onscreen. Jiang Wu is the only one whoās interesting and he serves as comedic relief.Ā Ā
And then there are all the unnecessary deaths. Itās like theyāre killing off all the good characters one by one. What was the point of killing off the doctor? He was the only character who could scold both Zhao yao and Mo Qing. The drama felt so empty without him.Ā
But on a good note, I really liked most of the supporting characters, from Zhiyan to Shi Qi to Ah Rong to Gu Hanguang. They were also the most consistent characters in the drama.Ā
On a bad note, the drama spent tooĀ much time on the backstories of supporting characters. I did not care to watch Suruo mourn Luo Mingxuan and remembering how they fell in love, and this happens for pretty much all the couples in the drama. Itās because Zhao yao and Mo Qing have a very simple romantic arc thatās resolved very early on, so the writers had to throw in fillers to drag out the drama. And the consequence is that our leads end up getting not enough screen time.Ā
The final 2 episodes
Oh boy. The last 2 episodes were a hot mess. In the final battle, everyone kept attacking and stabbing Luo Mingxuan, but he just wonāt die?? Heās like Wolverine. He just comes back stronger. It just kept dragging on and on, and I completely lost interest. And I felt bad for Xu Kai. He was standing on the sidelines for most of the battle, just watching and shooting worried faces at Zhao yao. I hate to say he was useless, but it just felt like the writers did him dirty. Even Jiany Wu, who had already died by that point, was given a brief re-appearance. While Mo Qing, the ML, was forced to sit out on the action.Ā
Iām also so over the will-he-wonāt-he be evil plot. I keep saying this but Iāll say it again. It. Just. Keeps. Dragging. Iāve watching longer dramas, but this one felt to go on forever. We get it. Youāre being tortured by your inner demon, but love will conquer all.Ā
The editing is also weird? Some of the scenes arenāt in chronological order, and thereās no separation between dream sequences and reality. I also never liked the preview at the beginning of each episode. I also hate how they cut some crucial scenes from the TV version thatās on youtube, forcing me to hop onto doboku, which buffers.Ā
Honestly, the last episode felt like a hallucinated dream sequence. In one scene, theyāre all sitting around the table saying that the need to seal the Wan Jun sword before Mo Qing gets out of the control, and then it suddenly cuts to black with a title card that says 5 years later (donāt get me started on how often they overuse the ā5 years laterā plot device. Why is it always exactly 5 years?) We then see that Zhiyan is now the sect leader, and weāre told that Mo Qing has sealed himself away, and Zhao yao has been waiting for him to return. We donāt see them say goodbye to Mo Qing before he seals himself away. No scene showing a handover to Zhiyan. Weāre just forced to go with it and imagine these scenes ourselves.Ā
Zhao yao, with a new hairstyle and new clothes to signify the time skip, watches Zhi yan and the sect from the distance. She then goes to visit other people, like Sima Rong and Liu Cangling. Liu Cangling and Zhiyan are the only couple who were able to move on from each other, and honestly, good for them. We then see Zhao yao sitting in the cave, pouring wine onto the cave floor, and then it cuts to black again and a sword flies through the air and wedges itself on the bedrock and we hear Mo Qing say Zhao yaoās name in a voiceover. And then it cuts to a scene where theyāre both in the cave wearing their clothes from 5 years and Zhao yao has her old hairstyle. You assume this is a flashback to when they sealed the sword. And then we see Mo Qing in another realm where he lowers the sword in to the water, presumably sealing it. And then it cuts to both of them on the street buying food, wearing their old clothes and hairstyles.Ā
Does this mean he got out of the seal? When in the timeline is this street scene? How did he get out of the seal? Did he just walk out? Was Zhao yao there waiting for him, or did he go and find her? Itās typical for there to be a long period of uncertain separation in xianxia and wuxia dramas, and these dramas usually end either ambiguously where you donāt know if the couple will reunite, or they end with an emotional reunion, like in Ashes of Love, Eternal Love, Love and Destiny, and Love and Redemption, and famously in Return of the Condor Heroes. But what in the world was this ending?? The hell happened? That was so anticlimactic. If the scene on the street really was theirĀ āreunionā after he got out of the seal, does that mean Zhao yao changed her hair back to 5 years ago? Why is the costuming so confusing then?
And the last scene where they have the same actors play their kids? Um, no. Thatās just plain weird. You built up the chemistry between the 2 actors, and then in the end you make them play siblings and re-enact the scene of when their parents met? For what? To make the audience reminisce about the budding romance between the leads at the beginning so that things come full circle? But, these characters are siblings?? Youāre trying to make us emotional over a scene of two siblings pretending to be lovers?
There was just no point in doing that. It doesnāt tell us anything about the charactersā married life now. I donāt care about their kids. I care about the characters and what theyāre doing now. What a strange and uncomfortable way to end the drama. Not satisfying at all.Ā
It would have been better if they had left it ambiguous. The amount of times that Zhao yao came back from the dead showed that they can defy the impossible, so even if it was an ambiguous ending, youād still be able to believe that theyāll be together again. But this mess just ruined the chemistry. Ugh. I reallyĀ miss the first half of the drama.Ā
Overall Impression
Iām mad about how chaotic the last few episodes were. While the beginning of the drama wasnāt without its flaws either, it was still very promising and intriguing. The beginning of the drama felt like they knew where they were going with the story, even if you didnāt completely like the direction that it went. So yes, I echo the other critiques saying that this drama had a strong beginning and a weak end.Ā
When I got to episode 35, I thought, how bad can this get? When I got to episode 42, I was still holding out hope that maybe other people were just harsh and maybe Iāll actually enjoy it. But no, the final 10 episodes are really as bad as everyone says it is.Ā
The romance, which was the only reason I stuck to the drama, also felt a little underdeveloped. I wish we got to see more scenes of them pre-episode 30.They were so cute then. Everything post-episode 30 was just them being constantly worried about each other.Ā
At least there was no angst. And the comedy was great. So thereās that.Ā
I give this drama a 7/10 for the characters and the premise. The plot is not worth watching due to terrible editing, pacing, and consistency, but itās also a drama that wonāt take you long to watch since you could skip most of it anyway and just go to the scenes with the leads. Itās my first drama watching Bai Lu and Xu Kai, but Iām def now interested in more of their work, like Arsenal Military Academy.Ā
The Legends (2019) - Halfway Review (first 30 episodes)
So far, this is a drama that I skim-watched, and I have only watched the first half. I keep hearing how the second half is even worse and goes downhill, so Iām bracing myself for it. But here are my thoughts about what worked for me and what didnāt.Ā
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
Plot Summary (this is kinda long, so skip to the next section if youāve already watched it)
I actually really like the premise of the plot and think itās different from your typical xianxia/wuxia/xuanhuan romance drama. The plot opens with a naive and innocent girl,Ā Lu Zhao yao, who lives in a remote mountain forest with her grandfather. Their ancestral duty is to guard the seal of the Demon Kingās son. Lu Zhao yao, our bubbly FL, is lonely. She wants a companion because it has always just been her and her grandfather in this empty and lonely mountain forest.Ā
One day,Ā Luo Mingxuan from the Immortal sect breaks into cave in the forest and attempts to attack the Demon Kingās son, but the son escapes and Luo Mingxuan is injured. The FL finds him, heals him, and falls for him. Luo Mingxuan is intrigued by her too. He tells her to be a good person and to be a keeper of peace of harmony in the world. He leaves, and she is determined to be a good person who saves people and helps the weak.Ā
Meanwhile, the Demon Kingās son is bullied by the villagers and is soon captured by the Immortal sect who wants to execute to prevent him from becoming a harbinger of evil. Zhao yao saves him as her first good deed, defeats all the sect leaders, and proves herself to be far more superior than any of them. She is unbeatable, and therefore makes an enemy out of all of them.Ā
The Demon Kingās son cares for her wounds, and she teaches him to stand up for himself and protect himself. She names him Mo Qing. She tells him her dream of wanting to build her own sect to help keep the peace in the world. He takes in everything she says with rapt attention. But she then tells him that she needs to leave him to find Luo Mingxuan, the person who inspired her to be a good person. She tells Mo Qing not to wait for her because she wonāt come back. Mo Qing watches her leaves. Despite her telling him to start a new life, he never leaves the encampment that theyāve created because he has nowhere else to go.Ā
A month later, Zhao yao returns to the encampment, bloodied and jaded. When Zhao yao had gone to the Immortal sect to find Luo Mingxuan, he chained her up, tortured her, and forced her to reveal the location of the Demon Kingās son. She refused to surrender because sheās adamant that she did the right thing in protecting an innocent boy who did no wrong. Luo Mingxuan says that sheās going down the path of evil and prepares to kill her. Her grandfather shows up to save her, but is killed by Luo Mingxuan. She then realizes that everything that Luo Mingxuan had said about being a good person and upholding peace and justice is a lie. Out of spite, she reasons that if everyone thinks sheās an evil person, then sheāll show them what it means to be truly devil and despicable. She sets out to become the most evil person they have yet to see. Sheās hellbent on revenge, and no longer believes in love and in the goodness of people. I just love her petty attitude because I can relate to it so much. You think this is bad? Okay, Iāll show you bad.Ā
For the next 5 years, she builds her fearsome sect. She recruits a group of loyal followers, and is now known as a cruel and devilish conqueror. Mo Qing stays by her side as a quiet guard and gatekeeper of the sectās entrance, watching her from the sidelines. On the day when Zhao yao tries to take the Wan Jun Sword, she tries to take advantage of his feelings for her and tells him to distract the people from the Immortal sect so that she can take the sword. But the sword instead calls out for him and wants him as its master. This causes the cave to collapse, and Zhao yao is buried in the rubbles, her last words accusing Mo Qing of betraying her.Ā
We then have another time skip of 5 years. Zhao yao is resurrected when her body comes into the contact with the blood ofĀ Qin Zhiyan, a disciple from the Immortal sect. Their bodies are now connected; whenever Zhiyan is hurt or injured, the same injuries are manifested on Zhao yaoās body. To other people, they both have Zhiyanās face, and only Zhiyan can see Zhao yaoās true face. Zhiyanās personality is the exact opposite of our FL. Zhiyan is meek, clumsy, kind, and not clever, which means that Zhao yao becomes the bossy half of this blood-connected duo. Zhao yao is determined to return to her sect and get revenge on Mo Qing whom she not only mistakenly thinks killed and betrayed her 5 years ago, but whom has now taken over as the leader of her sect. She wants to reclaim her position and restore her clan to its prior glory as a sect to be feared.Ā Ā
Pacing
All of this happened within the first 4 opening episodes. To be honest, the first 2 episodes were slow. Episodes 3 and 4 were when the deaths, time skips, and Zhao yaoās rise and fall happened.Ā
Despite a slow first 2 episodes, the drama overall had a strong opening. We got to see a reversal of power dynamics where the FL is evil and powerful, while the ML is the quiet and demure ādamsel in distressā who secretly crushes on the FL. Itās different from the usual underdog storyline.Ā
But after Zhao yaoās ādeathā, the plot slows down. The power dynamics reverts back to what we typically see in xianxia dramas: the ML becomes the almighty powerful sect leader, while the FL has lost her powers and her identity, and has to now pretend to want to be his disciple in order to slowly regain her power so that she can kill him and get her revenge.Ā
From episode 5 onwards, the FLās arc is about how she and Zhiyan have to pretend to be the same person. This means that sometimes one of them has to hide (usually Zhiyan) so that no one sees both of them. However, this also means that we see more of the actress who plays Zhiyan than Bai Lu. While the second lead actress is good and is able to pull off playing both roles, I didnāt choose to watch the drama because of her. I had just started to get used to Bai Lu as the FL, and now suddenly, Iām forced to see the face of another actress as the FL. I imagine that this is when the drama loses most of its audience. It really tests your patience. In the comment section of these episodes, I saw a lot of people asking when the FL gets her face back because if the switch doesnāt happen soon, theyāll drop the drama.Ā
I was also *this* close to dropping the drama. It felt the Bai Lu barely had any screen time, and the SFL had very little chemistry with Xu Kai (which I guess was the point). And speaking of screen time, Xu Kai only appears for like 10 minutes per episode.Ā
The leads also felt very removed from all the plotting and scheming that was happening amongst the sects around them. So not even 10 episodes into the drama, the plot felt like a drag.Ā
When you realize that Zhao yao wonāt get her face back anytime soon, you begin to wonder how the romance between her and Mo Qing will progress. Will he fall for her personality even though she has Zhiyanās face? Does this mean that heāll fall in love with both Zhiyan and Zhao yao because he thinks theyāre the same person and doesnāt know that thereās 2 of them? Is this going to turn into some kind of moral/philosophical dilemma about what is means to love someoneās soul? Is this going to turn into some messed up love triangle?
Thankfully, Mo Qing figures out whatās happening pretty soon (around episode 11), so he knows that Zhao yao and Zhiyan are distinct people. We donāt really see his thought process for how he is able to figure things out, but we just assume that heās able to put the clues together. It seems that at first, he might have assumed that they inhabit the same body (like a Stephanie Meyerās The Host kind of situation), where Zhao yao takes over at night, but then soon he figures out that Zhao yao is actually just invisible during the day, and appears at night with Zhiyanās face. But then he gives Zhao yao her old necklace, which allows him to see her in her true form during the day and night, even though she doesnāt know it.Ā
The Good
This brings to me to talk about what I do like about the drama. Both the ML and FL are clever people. Theyāre able to see through peopleās schemes and are always one step ahead. We also see that Zhao yao, the fearless conqueror/demonness, has met her match, which makes their interactions really cute to watch. Zhao yao used to be his hero that he could only admire from afar. She was the haughty sect leader that he could barely talk to because she her attention was always occupied by other things. But now, heās her superior and the one giving out orders, while she has to put on an act to please him because sheās now his disciple. But at the same time, she keeps trying to kill him, and he knows it, and heās always amused by her attempts because itās a reminder that Zhao yao has really come back to him. He simultaneously enjoys and is hurt by her hate for him. Talk about being masochistic.Ā
Iām also a sucker for reincarnation/ghost plots. While Zhao yao isnāt exactly reincarnated (but more like reawakened), and she isnāt exactly a ghost but is invisible, the way that the plot plays out is similar. Both the ML and FL metaphorically have a new life: heās a sect leader when he was once someone who was bullied and persecuted and couldnāt protect himself, and sheās now just a disciple who needs his help from time to time. Itās always funny when he respectfully refers to Zhao yao in the third person to other people as the previous sect leader, even though sheās in the same room with them. And itās also funny how she calls him that weird ugly kid, her first nickname for him when they first met, whenever heās not in the room with her. The way they talk about each other in reference to theirĀ āprevious lifeā is such as contrast from how they currently treat other when face to face.Ā
The invisibility plot point is also fun, especially in episode 21 when he follows her around town. Itās also the first time when weāre explicitly shown what he sees from his point of view. Zhao yao is like a hologram, and with a bit of magic and concentration, Mo Qing is able to lift the invisibleĀ āmaskā that covers her to see her in her true form. Zhao yao is always startled when Mo Qing seems to be looking right at her.Ā
But between episodes 12 and 20, the plot stagnates. Itās not until episode 21 when it picks up again because all the subplots and backstories finally start to come together. And so far, episodes 21-30 have been good. The leads are finally getting involved with the larger plot. They actually make things happen. There are important consequences to their actions and decisions. Zhao yao stillĀ doesnāt get her face back, but everyone finally knows that there are two of them, so Zhao yao and Zhiyan donāt have to keep playing the hiding/switching game. Luo mingxuan finally wakes up from his slumber, so the original villain of the drama has returned. It turns out that Jiang Wu is just a manifestation ofĀ Qin Qianxuanās lust for Zhao yao. Lu Shiqi, a teenager(?) raised by Zhao yao, reppears again for the first time since episode 4. Mo Qingās inner demon is starting to come out. Zhao yao finally finds out that Mo Qing already knew that she had come back from the dead and that she is invisible during the day all along. She also finally starts to accept that he has feelings for her and her for him (That line in episode 30 though: āIf you fight, Iāll be your sword, if you retreat, Iāll be your shieldā). The plot is finally getting good. But Iām just worried about how itās going to be handled from here since I keep hearing how weak the second half is.Ā
I also like Zhao yao and Zhiyanās relationship. Yes, theyāre blood-bonded so theyāre forced to look out for each other, but I just really like how wholesome their relationship is and how much they do care for one another. They have to share their secrets with each other because itās them against the world. Theyāre a unit, and their survival depends on them cooperating and trusting each other.Ā
The Meh
The villains havenāt really been a threat to the leads, and theyāre not that interesting tbh. I always skip the scenes when theyāre scheming (which are a lot of scenes), and Iām still able to follow the gist. Like I already mentioned, up until episode 21, the leads felt so removed from what was happening in the other sects. Despite being a sect leader, it doesnāt feel like Mo Qing really does much besides interact with the FL, and the FL doesnāt do much besides stir up antics. She doesnāt actively try to figure out how to get her face back. She just thinks that if she gets Zhiyan to do more good deeds in her name, then sheāll wrack up more underworld credits, and sheāll be able to buy the pill that will help her restore her powers. But itās also a little odd that her credit count is increasing so slowly when sheās done a lot to help Zhiyan.Ā
Mo Qing and Zhao yao have a really cute romantic arc, but Mo Qing is a very typically ML who unconditionally loves the FL and sacrifices everything for her. He doesnāt really stand out from the other xianxia MLs, and his character isnāt given much to work with (especially with so little screen time). Compare him with Sifeng from Love and Redemption or Ye Hua from Eternal Love who had to express so much pain and suffering. Maybe the angst just hasnāt happened yet in this drama.Ā Ā
Mo Qingās love and devotion to Zhao yao was also a little hard to believe at first. They only really interacted with each other closely for a handful of scenes over a period of a few days, but I guess when you take into consideration that he was abused and abandoned as a child, and then bullied and nearly executed, then the fact that Zhao yao was the first person to care for him, be his friend, and give him a name, itās no wonder that heād go to the ends of the earth for her.Ā
There is a very little character development, and the world building stagnated after the first few episodes. I guess we start to see some growth in Zhao yao and Zhiyan in the 20s episodes, where Zhao yao learns to be more caring and tender, and Zhiyan learns to be a bit more confrontational, but for the most part, it feels like things are happening to them and theyāre just reacting to it. Zhao yao may seem assertive, but she doesnāt cause things to happen. Her being invisible does hinder her agency and makes her more of an observer in the drama. It feels like sheās been laying low for so long now, so Iām looking forward to seeing what she does in the next episodes now that Luo Mingxuan has awakened.Ā
I remember when this drama first came out in 2019, I had just finished Fuyao a few months prior, so I didnāt want to watch what seemed like a second-rate version of Fuyao. But this drama has a completely different premise, so I guess it goes to show not to judge a drama by its name.Ā
I also wasnāt in the mood to watch a drama where the leads are my age. Iām still getting used to the idea of people my age on screen, while Iām watching them at home, still having no idea what I want to do with my life.Ā
In terms of plot, itās hard to compare Fuyao and Zhao yao since theyāre so different. Fuyao works her way to becoming a powerful general, while Zhao yao starts as a powerful general and then loses everything.Ā
Overall halfway impression
People say that you should watch this drama for the romance between the leads, and while yes, the romance is watchable, I donāt know if thatās enough to carry you through this drama since the romance progresses very slowly. The leads only have a few scenes together in each episode, so youāre skipping most of it. Essentially, this is a very skimmable drama. Iām hoping that Iāll skim less as the leads become more involved in the sect politics, and I wonder if Iāll still be invested in the romance when Zhao yao and Mo Qing officially get together. Stay tuned.
Update: So Iām on episode 35 now, and it seems like a good place to end things. Is this where things start to go downhill because theyāre going to drag it out to 55 episodes?Ā

This is the story of a master and discipleās unknowing, strange and cheesy process of falling in love.

Personal review:
- I FREAKINā LOVE THIS.
- Epic story spanning across northern ancient China, involving taking down monsters, killing zombies, hunting ghosts, solving murder cases, training teenage cultivators, raising children (okay, maybe not thatā¦) and so much more.
- Slowburn romance that is just perfect because it is, yes, so slowburn. And have I talked about how much I love the couple?
- Prepare tissues because itās so gonna hurt.
- Excellent cast of supporting characters. (Jiang Cheng I love youuuuuu)
- The sheer amount of ambition from the author. She smoothly blends so many issues including politics, the grey area of morality, redemption, hatred and forgiveness into a beautiful romantic tale.
- What are you doing?!!! Just drop whatever you are doing and read this!!!

Personal review:
- Even more epic than Mo Dao Zu Shi in terms of scale. Spanning across 3 realms - the Heaven, the Human World and the Underworld.
- Splendid blend of humour, mystery, war drama and, beware, so much angst.
- A love story that took 800 years to unfold. 800 YEARS!!! Their love is so pure it will strike the deepest cord in your heart. Ragpicker Crown Prince Heavenly God uke (yes, you read that right) x Extremely Loyal Thick-skinned Demon King seme. What a combo.
- Also with those 800 years, you follow Xie Lianās journey through the most remarkable ups and downs. What he goes through in 800 years is a humbling tale of a person who has probably seen it all. Make sure you embrace yourself for this. It really is going to hurt.
- Even the supporting cast have really solid backstories. And most of them are truly adorable. Basically all of her works have great supporting cast lol.

Some fantastic additional information I thought I should also share:
- The Scum Villainās Self-Saving System: A donghua adaptation has been confirmed and production will probaby start next year.
- Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: As I have always screamed about, thereās a manhua, an upcoming donghua, an upcoming live-action series, and an audio drama. And a game adaptation has been confirmed!
- Heaven Officialās Blessing: A donghua adaptation and a live-action series adaptation have been signed! Looking forward to more news in the near future.
(You probably start wondering how much money the author makes⦠yes, I wonder that tooā¦)
(and rumour has it that Moxiang Tongxiu ie the author just barely graduated college (!!!) )
In any case, with the info above, I hope you have something good to read and to look forward to. Come to this Moxiang Tongxiuās abyss, fangirl and scream with me please!!!

Short Story: A Date Under the Moon (YaoLan)
***This is a short Zhao Yao AU story where all the happy Wan Lu Sect family members survived. Zhao Yao and Mo Qing are happily married after all the events that happened, and plan on leaving the sect to Zhi Yan. I apologize ahead for any mistakes. I hope this can help soothe some hearts. I donāt own any of these characters or people and they belong to their respective owners.***
Description:
Mo Qing spends an entire day searching and worrying about Zhao Yao, which leads to a sweet date under the moon at the entrance of Wan Lu Sect.

The Usual Shows I am Watching List
For the next week or so at least (obviously, I am unlikely to watch every single one on the list, but they are all in the running; itās like a preview for posts I am likely to make).
The Abyss (Korea) - I am a few eps behind and, frankly, the drama about two dead people brought back into different bodies, hunting a serial killer and finding love, should be more engaging and smarter than it is, but itās a pleasant easy watch and I am very fond of the two leads.
Angelās Last Mission (Korea) - I am only two eps in, but the gorgeous intensity reminds me of old-school kdrama melos that I love so much. A bitter blind ballerina and an angel who is supposed to help her find love but falls for her instead is probably doomed for disaster in terms of happy ending, but I will be eating up all the pain!
Arthdal Chronicles (Korea) - grim (but not too grim) cool and otherwordly fantasy. I still donāt care for any characters, but the drama itself is great to watch.
Cage of Love (China) - surprisingly, not a BDSM tale. Hawick Lau wears amazing outfits and seeks revenge while trying to clear himself from being framed on a regular basis and dealing with heroine who sometimes loves him and sometimes thinks he is the resident serial killer. I started it years ago and now feel like continuing.
The Crowned Clown (Korea) - I need a sageuk in my life and watching Yeo Jin Gu in the pretty inferior Absolute Boyfriend made me remember how impressed I was by him playing both a psycho king and a sweet acrobat doppleganger who replaces him, so I restarted it.
Good Omens (UK) - loved the book when I read it a gazillion years ago and the first ep was good!
Heart of Stone/Hua Jai Sila (Thailand) - basically a 1980s romance crack about a pimp who comes back for revenge on his stepmom and falls for his childhood friend, this is insane! But addictive! Also make-outs!
Here to Heart (China) - itās on my list and I may or may not get to it. I like the angsty premise and credits (they used to be lovers until she broke his heart in what I am sure is either a misunderstanding or noble idiocy), now he is mega rich and she is hired as his assistant, but Zhang Han has never clicked with me for some reason. Heās good-looking, heās an OK actor, but for whatever reason he just doesnāt have thatĀ āitā for me. Maybe this drama will change that.Ā
Just Between Lovers (Korea) - when it was airing and people were falling madly in love with it, I was in a kdrama slump that no kdrama could cure. But now - oh, this is so achingly, perfectly, emotionally gorgeous. Only one ep in, but I already know this will be a keeper.
Kimse Bilmez (Turkey) - the one Turkish entry on this list! Starts on Tuesday, promises angst, women in danger, macho traditional men who defend them blah blah blah. As a modern feminist, I should probably be appalled, but I like what I like and gimme gimme gimme!
Le Coup de Foudre (China) - I just want to see the aristocrat daughter and the hot constable from An Oriental Odyssey be an OTP, all right?
Legend of Fuyao (China) - am on ep 22 I think. Itās pretty and shippy and I wonāt stay awake freaking out about characters or plot twists, but watching Ethan Ruan worship the ground Yang Mi walks on never gets old.
Legend of the Phoenix (China)Ā - on ep 4! Get subbed quicker for my sanity, pls. Love story, scheming courtiers, angst, period costumes. What more does a girl need? Jeremy Tsui looking scrumptious, apparently.
The Legends (China) - finally hit ep 20! I like it and itās a relaxing, fun, cute watch. Though if Zhao Yao figures out Demon Boy likes her before at least a dozen eps pass, despite him doing everything but carvingĀ āI love Zhao Yaoā into his chest, I would faint from shock.
Letting You Float Like a Dream (China) - I am excited Young Lord from Minglan gets to be the hero of his own story and get the girl he wants (even if he has to reincarnate a couple of times first), plus look cool in 1930s duds. This is very much my thing.
Likit Ruk/The Crown Princess (Thailand) - sometimes a lady just wants to watch a good, old-fashioned princess x bodyguard romance, especially when said princess and bodyguard are hot enough to set the Chao Praya river on fire.
Listening Snow Tower (China) - on ep 38 now. Gorgeous visuals, awesome fights, and the Victorian duality of the chaste and almost unspoken but frighteningly intense romance is so my jam. But if they kill the hero, I will riot. Let him and Lady Badass wuxia into sunset together, pls.Ā
My Absolute Boyfriend (Korea) - I am all up to date with this one. Which is weird because I am not up to date on other dramas I like more. This is a giant meh emotionally, and wastes some really good actors, but it is so good-naturedly unoffensive, I canāt even complain. Still, perhaps the story of a lady buying a lovebot should have stayed solely in manga form because Iāve never seen an amazing adaptation of it.
Pretty Man (China) - I liked the first ep, and you have no idea how rare it is for me to say that about a contemporary cdrama. Childhood loves who find second chances yes pls.
Princess Silver (China) - Yuu Watase, is that you? Did you write this? Cracky, not too serious, but seriously addictive, this is a chocolate bon bon in drama form. PS Pls cure the prince of his touch phobia through LOTS of skinship, princess!
Siege in Fog (China) - romantic dysfunction reigns supreme, even more so than gorgeous 1930s outfits and people. Elvis Han and Sun Yi boil my blood in amazingly pleasant ways as two people in a marriage of inconvenience, where he pines for her but wonāt show it and she loves another, until she wakes up and realizes that HELLO ITāS SEX ON LEGS ELVIS, I NEED TO GET SOME OF THAT! And the civil war says,Ā ānot so fast!ā
Too Late To Say I Love You (China) - I started it years ago when it was not fully subbed and loved it because in my secret heart-of-hearts, I too want a mega hot warlord who looks like Wallace Chung and has stylish 1930s cars and a private army to sweep me off my feet and obsess over me in an unhealthy but hormonally incredible fashion as if I am the only woman in the world. SiF reminded me of this so here we are.Ā
Tried and dropped:
The Plough Department of Song Dynasty (China) - watched one episode, felt my brain leaking out of my ears and bailed. Granted, I watch plenty of dumb stuff so far be it from me to act high and mighty about a bit of brainless fun, but I donāt like mysteries, there was no angst, and I couldnāt care less if all the characters fell into a giant pit, so here we goā¦
Well Intended Love (China) - people didnāt like it because the male lead was a sociopath. I didnāt like it because it was cutesy and boring and nobody in itĀ bothered to act (or couldnāt.) I bailed long before the dysfunction, thatās how bored I was.Ā
