at the risk of sounding like a bit of an idiot, i want to ask what steampowered giraffe is. because it looks interesting from what you post but i dont... quite... understand
Oh goshness, there is no sounding like an idiot on my blog! You are completely fine for asking! Now, if you will, I shall write probably a very long description of what Steam Powered Giraffe is, because they’re like, my favorite band ever.
Steam Powered Giraffe is a steampunk band that formed in 2008, which was founded by twins David Michael Bennett and Christopher “Bunny” Bennett (We always call her Bunny, because it just fits, you know? And she is in the middle of transitioning to a woman, so we call her a she, and she is quite a foxy she indeed uwu) the band originally had two member who was Jon Sprague and Erin Burke, but those two have gone and left for reasons. Now to replace both Jon and Erin is Sam Luke, who used to be their drummer. The band’s music genre is hard to say, but according to the wikipedia for them, they’re vaudeville, funk, folk, and rock, which I guess could be them in a nutshell. They’re really hard to describe!
The whole idea of the band is that they are automations built my Peter A. Walter, who originally designed these bots to serenade a girl that he really liked back in 1896, and with many upgrades since then, are now playing for everybody to entertain all. So these guys dress up like robots, with make-up and outfits and everything, and pantomime (act) as robots! It is absolutely amazing to watch them, like seriously.
What I LOVE about Steam Powered Giraffe is that there is one big backstory to the band, and since I’m terrible at describing things, you can go right here and learn about the backstory of the bots, and then come back to this message once you are done uwu
Back for more information? Fantastic! Since that backstory failed to mention any information on the robots themselves, now I can try my best to tell you about them!
This is Rabbit, the oldest of the bots, but seems like she’s the most immature at times. She is played by Bunny Bennett. She is a copper clockwork bot and since she’s the oldest she tends to malfunction quite a bit (she often breaks down during a song and has a stutter at times), and her metal as gone through a bit of oxidation, hence the blue.
(As you can see, Rabbit’s make-up is GORGEOUS and I CRY ALL NIGHT ABOUT HOW PRETTY IT IS. She also changes it all of the time, so you never know what she’s going to look like next! ) Anyways, Rabbit sings lead and backing vocals, and plays melodica, accordion, and the keytar. Everybody in this fandom pretty much adores her because she’s a cutie is a total dork on stage, and since she is the oldest, she tends to malfunction a lot. Like I said before, Bunny is in the middle of transitioning as a woman, so when you look up SPG right now, you will actually see her looking like this!
(Mm mm mm what a babe)
Okay MOVING ON BECAUSE I CAN TALK ABOUT RABBIT ALL DAY.
NEXT is The Spine, who is played by Bunny’s twin brother, David Michael Bennet. He is more the straight guy in the band and doesn’t fool around much, if not ever, but sometimes the band members can squeeze something playful out of him every once in a while. He is a futuristic dieselpunk robot with a titanium alloy spinal column, and along with that, The Spine received new adaptive programming. Instead of being an old fashioned automaton, The Spine was reprogrammed and redesigned to more closely represent a human. Oh yeah, he is also a total chick magnet too.
(I picked the hottest picture I could find of him on purpose okay)
He also has the biggest fucking voice range I have ever heard in my entire life and holy shit dude just listen to his voice (Excuse the weirdness of the video) His high voice makes me swoon, and I am definitely not the only one who does that. He sings lead and backing vocals, and he plays guitars, bass, mandolin, and the keyboards.(Here’s an extra picture for you since Rabbit has two uwu)
Okay okay last but not least, the newest bot in the band, Hatchworth! Who is an art deco robot made from an old iron cast stove. He was supposedly one of Colonel P. A. Walter’s original robots, but was locked away until The Jon (Who was one of the original bots in the band when they were simply busking in Balboa Parks) left the band. He is played by Sam Luke.
Yes, that mustache is totally real.
Hatchworth is the biggest dork I have ever seen okay? Like, he’s even more of a dork then Rabbit is. He is also rather naive, but what can you do when you’ve been locked away for years upon years? He had been kept in storage for many years due to a leaking and dangerous power core, but was recently repaired and put to use as the Walter Manor’s butler. He has a hatch on his chest that can conjure whatever he can think of, like in the war he would conjure different weapons that him and the bots could use, but now that the war is over, he just likes to make delicious, mystery sandwiches from it. He mostly sings background vocals, but does sing sometimes, he also plays the bass and drums.
(He’s also crossed between both of the Mythbusters and a walrus.)
Okay omg this message is getting WAY TOO LONG. So I guess the rest you can go and find yourself! (Like information on The Jon and such, which you can easily find around wikipedia, Tumblr, Youtube, and other places! He was a big part of the band, since he’s in the first two albums, but I thought I would go ahead and just do the main three, since I had a feeling that this was going to be way too long.)
Now that you now know more about the robots, I can now link you to some amazing videos! (All of these videos include The Jon instead of Hatchworth, sans the last two, because they have yet to make an official music video with Hatchy)
Honeybee (Their most famous song. I swear, everybody loves this song. Even people who don’t like SPG seem to love this song.)
Brass Goggles (another song that the whole fandom absolutely loves, and is pretty much their theme song)
Automatonic Electronic Harmonics (Another song that showcases The Spines great vocal range)
Captain Albert Alexander (One of my personal favorites, and this video shows you how they are live, and you also get to see how adorkable Rabbit is and how great is miming is!)
Hatch Fever (Finally, a song with Hatchworth! This is how they introduced Hatchworth back in 2013, and I have to say, it gets incredibly catchy and will probably get stuck in your head.)
Fire Fire, (Which is not yet an official Steam Powered Giraffe song. It is a song that was written by the guy who plays the The Spine, but it has yet been studio recorded and put on an album, and we don’t know if it’ll ever be, but we’re hoping that it’ll be on the next one.)
Oh my golly gosh I am so sorry that this message is this long! There is just so much to tell about Steam Powered Giraffe! I hope you enjoy what you like and you’re not bored with my reply! If you made it this far, thank you oh so much. UwU
after The Jon “disappeared”, The Spine got his most favorite plectrum (◡‿◡✿) I wasn’t really going to finish this so it’s quite messy and sorry for horrible art
omgosh i clicked it to make it bigger and it became like whole new picture. :’(
OH MY GOD I LOOKED AT THIS SO OFTEN BUT I DIDN’T EVEN THINK OF THAT (click and drag works too but not as beautifully)
Ohmygod!

Zinc is 95% finished! We did a makeup test this weekend and are very pleased with the results. All I need to do now is sew wig clips into his skull-cap (not pictured) and then either alter his shoes or whip up a pair of spats. :)
So this is pretty fucking spectacular
