My petition to Heated Rivalry fans to read the You Could Make a Life universe:
Have you read through the Game Changers series and are looking for more hockey M/M romances?
To me, the You Could Make a Life universe by Taylor Fitzgerald (@youcouldmakealife) is the ultimate hockey romance universe. I have been reading the books in this universe for like over a decade now (the first book was officially published in 2015, first came out on AO3 as original fiction in 2013). It has so many wonderful couples and stories that I would encourage people look into!
Important note: Taylor always uploads her work first on AO3 for free and then publishes her work. She also has exclusive content on her Patreon. I'll share stories she's written that are both published and on AO3, depending on which avenue interests you.
The Published Series:
The OG story: You Could Make a Life. Marc is the star player and Dan is a fourth liner on his team. They are a delight, and serve a role a lot like Skip in Game Changers, as the first out players in the league. Their story of coming out is more complex than what I understand happens with Skip and you really get time to live with these characters. I haven't read this one in a long time but I will probably pick it up again soon.
The rivals to lovers story: Coming in First Place (followed by sequels And Then and Between the Teeth). David and Jake are hands down my favorite couple in YCMAL 'verse, David is my favorite character. Heated Rivalry fans will find the base narrative very familiar: two top tier hockey players who are drafted 1st and 2nd place in their draft year and are set up as rivals vying for Calder [btw despite similarities, this was written before HR!]. David is a shit. An autistic-coded, angry, very closeted shit who I love so badly and unfortunately so does Jake. Very much black cat and happy-go-lucky Labrador relationship. David's story is as much a romance as it is David figuring himself out.
Rookie and enforcer: Thrown Off the Ice. This is an age difference romance wherein rookie player Liam takes a shine to his teamās enforcer. It also dives into the consequences of an enforcer's job and post-concussion syndrome.
The AO3 Series:
Hotshot star and NHL prospect: Impaired Judgement (and other excuses). Bryce and Jared are a fantastic way to dip your toe into Taylorās works if you want to see if theyāre for you. Bryce is a mess, a star player whoās been in the media for all the wrong reasons. He meets Jared at a prospect camp heās forced to do to clean up his image and Jared goes on a campaign to torment him that goes sideways (and horizontalā¦) fast. Bryce has to do a lot of work dealing with internalized homophobia. Jared is a bitch but we love him for it. Particularly strong supporting cast in this one and probably second favorite couple after Jake and David. Content warning: Underage - Jared is 17 and I believe Bryce is 21 when they first get together. Jared's parents are appropriately Not Here For It.
Childhood best friends to lovers: No Expectation of Returns: Gabe and Stephen, who later feature prominently in Bryce and Jaredās story, were childhood best friends and both pros. Until Stephen experiences a career-ending injury on the ice. Short and sweet, especially great to read before IJ because you see their relationship after they've settled into being a couple.
Other AO3 stories to consider:
Besties to lovers: Itās a setup. Note that an inciting incident of this story is Joey getting outed nastily by an ex.
Besties to lovers (the ace version): Vinny gets a life
Captain and the messy, often dirty, player who gets traded to his line: cards on the table (ongoing, and references other stories, but I really am enjoying these two). Very autistic captain and his ADHD menace boyfriend coded.
Additional notes:
The stories are all at least loosely interconnected, with many of the characters showing up or being referenced in other stories. Spoilers wise, I personally feel YCMAL is the one that is most spoiled by others, as the circumstances of how they came out are often referenced to as the first out players in the league.
Here is a handy reading guide that does a better job going through the different stories and their relation to each other than me.
This is an alternate universe NHL, so Taylor has played around with what teams exist, such as the North Stars and Kansas City Scouts
In comparison to the Game Changers series, YCMAL is more plot-forward. While there is absolutely a fair amount (and definitely more than a fair amount in some) of sex scenes, I would say her work is more plot heavy than GC and less focused on explicit sex scenes.
Resource guide -- characters, stories, timelines, etc -- available on the wiki.
I hope someone find this helpful to them as they go into a Heated Rivalry drought while we wait for season 2!
Always in tandem has to be one of the most gut wrenching pieces of fiction ive ever read and I think about it constantly. Everybody say thankyou Taylor Fitzpatrickā¦. These two are all ive been thinking about recently so heres some old art from a couple months ago . More to come
More assorted always in tandem fanart !! ! ! They break my heart i love it so much .
i know it's bad when we look out, but bad, bad people, they don't live in our house.
š Heated Rivalry S01E01 Rookies š„
i think quite often about the implications of shane growing up in nowhere ottawa, a cottage at the edge of the woods, and ilya hailing from the cold, salt-stained streets of moscow. the way those two childhoods never stopped existing inside them. the way they surface in quiet, domestic moments.
shane kills the bugs in their house without thinking. he doesnāt even hesitate. just a folded paper towel, quick and clean. ilya, who flinches at the sound of loons on the lake, watches from a safe distance, faintly horrified. he has never been an exterminator. he has never needed to be.
ilya offers to hire someone to change a lightbulb. to replace a lock. to fix something small and ordinary. shane just blinks at him, slow and confused, because it costs ten dollars at home depot and then you do it yourself, ilya... thatās the whole point. thatās how itās always been done.
but ilya knows how to endear himself to the local bakery. he leans on the counter, soft voice, easy smile, and every time they leave there is something extra tucked into the brown paper bag. being a millionaire means nothing here. every grandmother pinches his cheek anyway. every owner insists he take more.
he doesnāt need google maps when they drive through the city. he knows instinctively how streets bend, how neighborhoods breathe. he has every app for taxis, deliveries, reservations, tailoring. he knows how to argue, too -- sharp and precise -- when someone tries to take advantage of shane. no, you are not ripping off my husband. no, you will not get away with it (shane's no idiot, but yuna famously handles all his business, simply taking his interests in mind).
(by the same vein) shane, who barely knows how to negotiate a contract because someone else always did it for him (yuna, an agent, etc), knows the sky instead. he knows the constellations. he learned them standing beside his father, neck bent back, the dark stretching endless above them. (he was a boy scout for exactly 1 year before quitting bc it cut into hockey time). sometimes they lie on the patio furniture now, deep in thought, and shane points them out one by one, voice soft with certainty, and ilya listens like heās being told a story (it reminds him, at first with a shock, of his mother, of bedtime folk stories told once by the first russian mother to the first russian child. of cannabilism and children being stolen by devils in the middle of the night, but it was still funny & sweet anyway, bc irina swore to always protect him before tucking his little toes in)
ilya fills their kitchen with beautiful, lavish, complicated things. heavy clay pots. expensive japanese knives. a coffee machine that hisses and gleams like something alive. the tv room with state of the art speakers & a remote system that takes shane 3 days to figure out how to use. shane brings the deck pillows inside before the first snowfall. he checks the seals on the windows. he knows which mornings the frost will come early.
they are both, in quiet ways, teaching each other how to live.
(and, more quietly still, carrying small, invisible pieces across that shared space between them. ilya learns to rotate his own tires. shane cooks his first stir fry. and what a beautiful thing that is -- for someone to look inside you and, somewhere in the shape of who youāve become, recognize the person you love most).
it is strange, sometimes, to see the ghosts of who they were before this. the boy in the woods & the boy in the city. all those instincts, all those small private competencies, surviving into this shared space
and maybe thatās what love is. not becoming the same thing, but making room for the person shaped by somewhere completely different. letting their world fold into yours until neither of you is ever alone inside it again.
They are asking (respectfully) to see your coin collection (no intentions of taking to add to their horde)
Another quick piece of Robbie and Georgie. Robbie being the main centerpiece for this. Really enjoyed the back and forth of them being at BU and Washington early in in their story which mainly inspired this.
Been listening to Dhruv while drawing this and I think really fits the vibe, his two songs Speed of Light, and How? Are two great ones
Hopefully more to come of Robbie and Georgie⦠ā¤ļø
