christmas ball costume; if wizards had Goodwill, life-saving waistcoat, boy, are those jeans?
Xeno raised his eyebrows in a ‘well duh!’ expression. “Because who would want to be around a so-called nutcase? Which I’m not - I just think I’m more open minded, it’s a heavy burden. And Dorcas?” Xeno frowned, trying to picture her face in his mind. “She’s in my house, and that’s good - we Ravenclaw’s are known to be party animals.” He joked. “Why don’t you go with her this year?”
He breathed in and settled on the mindset of the month; it couldn't matter unless he made it matter. Sirius wrung his hands together, entwined fingers and cause for distraction, before craning his neck to look back at the Ravenclaw. "I'm sure Dorcas deserves more than a filler for the night. She's worth the full package, waltzing and flirting and kissing-- she really is. Besides, this year, I'm going with... well, a boy. Alternating the supply and demand, I guess."
Anthony smiled lightly as he rubbed his irritated eye once more. It would be nice to go to the ball with someone, a pureblood, that shared the same views as his own. Anthony was certain that Sirius would understand the pressure to conform to the ways of the pureblood society, and the fear he has of becoming a blood traitor for not wanting to follow the rest.
Anthony looked at the ground, nodding ever so lightly at the boy’s offer. “Shocking purebloods is what I live for so yes, I will go with you.”
He tucked his imminent surprise under a smile, far more self-satisfied than Sirius intended to reveal, and nodded his way through a poorly built answer. "Right-- okay. Shock night it is. I'll see you in front of the Ravenclaw tower, then."
"Good for you." He smiled, looking back up at the notice board. Xeno frowned at his babbling, not really sure what he was talking about - but he didn’t mind. "Sorry, can’t help you there. Not very good at catchphrases." He added awkwardly. "Um, who did you go with for the last ball? I mean, the Halloween one? I didn’t attend y’see - just curious."
"Didn't attend? Why? Oh, I went with Dorcas. She's a wonderful thing to have by your side, especially when the room is half crowded with people you'd rather don't see."
"Do you honestly think that I would go with someone like you? Looks like becoming a bloodtraitor made you loose the few braincells you had. Pity.”
"Now, that one was uncalled for. Don't worry, Vans, I'm just fixing up random polls and asking next to everyone to go to the ball with me-- a lucky guess has to happen sooner or later."
Just exactly how mad do you think I am, Black? I wouldn’t go to the ball with a disgrace such as yourself even if that means I’m doomed to boredom and the embarrassment of having no partner for the whole night.
Wha-- Fuck me, I've heard something about this from Amos, but I thought he was laying it on thick. Just what the hell happened to you, Alice?
Anthony, eyes still swollen from a day spent crying, looked at the pureblood Black with a strange curiosity. Though the events that lead up to his sister’s disappearance had indeed happened, Sirius was right, he needed some time to forget about them and just have fun- at least for a night.
Rubbing a red eye with the back of his wrist, Anthony replied, “Erm, was this invitation even directed at me, hm?”
Contrary to popular beliefs, Hogwarts didn't swarm with students Sirius had noticed and consequentially dated. Every affair he'd ever had tasted like replacement, so it didn't take long to bolt the need for affections, controlled step by step. Eying the Ravenclaw now, all bloodshot eyes and misplaced feelings, Sirius wanted to believe that this late interest was due to his sister's disappearance, that he somehow wished to help, but there's a line between deluding yourself and downright hypocrisy. Anthony was pretty, and that's all it went.
"Well, it's a lovely day for being irrational. And getting called a filthy blood traitor, of course. Forget I said anything-- but if you ever want to shock a good amount of purebloods, let me know."
"A ball, huh?" He chuckled lightly, turning to the person next to him. "Who do you think you’re going with?"
"No one. I'm a lone wolf, Xeno-- wait, that would be Remus. Right, I'm a staggering stag-- Prongs again. Okay, I've got no catchphrase here."
"Why do you feel compelled to bore me to death?"
"It's my go-to hobby, Worms. Partly because, by Merlin, I can't imagine a living thing that wouldn't bore you to an early death."
"I'm not saying we should ignore everything that happened and totally foxtrot over the fact that there's an axe above our powdered necks, but still-- isn't that just what purebloods do? And while I don't know about yourself, I'd rather go pureblood on this one. So... come to the ball with me?"
Sirius Black did not spring from the womb with a lion’s mane; he was, once, the decided Heir to the Noble and Most Ancient House, the celebrated boy who would become a great man.
When he was still a rebellious little star boy who charmed company and loved his mother, Sirius had a best friend, the strong first daughter of his father’s sister, a star girl in her own right.
James’ tongue was forming some teasing words, but kept the silence as Sirius cut him off, unconsciously spinning some filled with anger words. What came next made James’ blood run cold. Stunned by his friend’s behavior, his mind ceased to work properly, frozen for the moment in a blank pathetic stare. He wanted to shake his head in order to gather his thoughts and react, but it was like he has lost the control over his own body, utterly astounded. He didn’t even flinch as Sirius threw his sharp purist remarks, but shock was written all over his face, along with a hint of disappoint. But then, all of a sudden, as if he got his powers back by a miracle, James stretched out his hand and punched him in the face, not so much to hurt him, but to wake him up. The look on his face didn’t falter for a second, remaining as cold, surprised and let down as initially. ”You aren’t them, Sirius, so stop trying to make me believe otherwise. Mocking the muggleborns? Beneath you as well.” the Gryffindor muttered, rubbing his fist.
Sirius lapped at the blood, licked and smeared and smudged it with his sleeve, ultimately averting his eyes, anything to make the red go. He steadied on the same armchair (a mistake ever getting up) and curled his arms around himself, a cruel smile inching towards the boy's lips - something he barely opposed. The student raised a sticky hand, crossed by tiny streams of blood as if it was cheap marble, and ran it through his hair. "Can't say I didn't deserve that." He wondered whether that was the first time he'd said the words. Cowering to James, for James, it was one thing, but backing away in front of Orion would have been unforgivable even in hindsight. "Yeah, 's oddly familiar. Sirius Black, elected most punchable Gryffindor. Not Prefect, but still-- still. Maybe I judged my old pop too harshly, huh? Poor sod couldn't resist the worldly spread temptation of swinging a lefty." It hurt if he laughed - must have Prongs aimed for the mouth, truly? - but then again, when didn't it? There are jester and there are circus clowns, which as for Sirius often proved a difference, and he held no delusions about where he belonged. "I'll make my apologies after I sober up, don't worry. I would have gotten back to the person who trashed what I love just the same." He propped his feet on the coffee table, the world outside dying along with nightfall, since alcohol escapades always ended here, a dormant final of the previous act. Sirius closed his eyes and shrugged altogether, a wince tangled on his features. "Last time someone did, I left them."
Xenophilius gave him a genuine smile. Never has someone taken interest into the things he loves. “Well, y’can’t see them unless you wear spectrespecs, see. Basically they fly in through y’ears or nose and they make y’brain go fuzzy. I think the buzzing stops when they die, which is usually after a day or two. But sometimes it can last for weeks, depending.”
Wait, you're saying that out there, in the big green world, some creatures are casually existing, and these creatures have the ability to fucking inhabit my brain? And they just live there?
She must have a soft spot for you, Black. She certainly doesn’t have anything of the sort for me. Didn’t even give me the chance to withdraw the books I was using before she tossed me out the door.
I'm not saying your inner seductive side has kept room for improvement... but sometimes I can't tell the difference between you and a broomstick.
"Holy—" she bit back the second part of what she was about to say and sent an unamused look towards Sirius. "This is a classroom, Sirius, in case you haven’t noticed it yet, you can other things in here apart from… what you’re doing." She turned her focus on the two girl. "Look, I know that on paper, it sounds cool that you got to have Sirius Black for a night to all yourselves, but you’d really wanna be one of the many nameless faces?" She took a short pause. "No? That’s what I thought, too. Now off you pop."
"Actually, Lice, not everyone shares your desire for... absoluty--absoluteness." Sirius let his cigarette dangle in the corner of his mouth, grinned against the spinning room. That one move, though, clearly looked better on paper, since it fell off as soon as he set on mumbling something. To prevent the company from leaving, chances were. When the slurred words died down, he glided his hand over the surface of a desk, and shifted in his seat, eyes bloodshot after studying the door. A dapple could of dust swallowed its wooden frame, and with the sound of slamming still present in his ears, Sirius turned to the other girl. "Well? Now are you really about to leave me alone in this state, oh, mighty defender of the nameless faces?"
Here comes the moment to fight | Sirius &Marlene
All that could be heard was screaming. Incoherent screaming coming from everyone who tried to fled as the dark figures dived from the sky and the light of the flying curses shone through the darkness. The blonde didn’t follow the example of many other who run away towards shelter, no she never backed away from danger. She made her way through the crowd while managing to defend herself and show them from what she was truly made of. If they wanted to play well, they have toyed with the wrong person. “This is the best thrill of all, come on who’s next for another game of cat and mouse? I am just getting started.” She remarked as her eyes scanned the area. As much as she would love to fight she knew that the main interest of everyone was to get into the castle but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have her fun at first. They were trying to hurt innocent people, people that might actually were close to her and her sense of morality couldn’t hold that weight upon her shoulders. She didn’t care for her safety at the moment even though she could sense the danger all that mattered was to fight those lunatics and hex them back to hell from where they have come from and bind them there. With that thought she stopped abruptly when she recognized one of the familiar troublemakers, her fingertips clutching her wand tightly as she ran towards his way.Other would have probably yelled to get his attention but Marlene was rather a girl of actions than words so she grasped him from the collar of his shirt and pushed him towards the stone wall of the alley as a curse hit where he previously stood. “If you haven’t noticed, you’re in the middle of a fight. So the wisest move is to keep your eyes to the surroundings.” She reprimanded him while she let out a breath of relief, the rash of adrenaline still cursing through her veins.
Her eyes for the first time focused on the emotionless tiny form that lied in the ground, her blood starting to boil. The resolution that such a young life was lost for a reason that yet remained unknown fueled her desire to fight. “I don’t know about you but I really want to hunt some hoods tonight.” Determination filled her voice as tension emanated through her body stature like an animal ready to attack. As a dark figure appeared just behind them, it seemed that like the opportunity to do exactly that was presented by its own and she was not certainly going to miss it.
He was still feeling the boy's fingers gripping his wrist. Don't let me die. At that point, the person who had uttered the words could have been himself as much as the other. A whirlpool of fright had spiraled through the entire street, the village, the world, and possibly for the first time, Sirius didn't stumble in reticence when he stopped to recognize his fear. It was there, weighing down the balance of those cold, bony fingers, smaller than the twigs they stepped over on their way to Quiddtich practice. Where do lives stand, after all, if not in balance? The Gryffindor breathed against what seemed like cloying smoke and death, a stench he only whispered about, in his foolishness and egoism, a stench he thought he'd known. Sirius bent over, almost ready to throw up, or scream his proof for living, something next to choking but not suffocating altogether, as if the air itself teased them all to hell.
He discovered he had been hitting his fists against the wall so hard, that tiger stripes of blood were smeared across concrete. The student left the battle in the eyes of a corpse, for nothing but a moment, and the child didn't talk back, no clue of a light before his fall, an answer after the tone-- and none of that now. He looked at Marlene, wild and fire and a wand seemingly grown glued to her hand. Where was his wand now? He wished the child had taken it. He wished the child had taken him.
Biting on the inside of his cheek, Sirius bolted forward, both hands lapped around his wand, shaking with the ferocity of yellow fever. He didn't grin and he didn't dance; James wasn't here to know the tune. But he did nod to Marlene, once, stepped over the boy's limp body, disarmed someone near his blind spot, and yelled. It was unintelligible, but when had death ever been otherwise?
James watched him distantly, trying not to pull a skeptical look on his face and ending up pressing his lips together into a thin line. He knew Sirius well enough to know he must have been particularly sad to hook up with random older ladies, and normally he would have pushed his luck to the point where he asked if that they were paid hookers, but he wasn’t sure it was the right time to be all witty and ironic with his very drunk and irritable friend. “Yes now, Sirius.” he replied sharply in an authoritative manner, looking him straight in the eye. He listened to all Padfoot had to say and it probably was the longest amount of time James Potter has ever kept his mouth closed, but then, with a filled with anger tone, he began, “I regret bursting your bubble, but you’re stuck with me. The deal with the demon is already sealed and you sure as hell aren’t gonna escape me.” He headed to him, rolling his eyes, looked at the two girls wearily and almost shouted, “Go! He is young enough to date your children. Go already.” causing the two of them to grab their robes in the blink of an eye and get out offended, slamming the door. James stared at the now closed door realizing that he couldn’t care less about those cheap whores. “What the fuck? Prostitutes? It’s beneath you. What the fuck?”
"What the fuck indeed, damn right!" He clasped his hands on the floor, pushing himself upwards to stand still, wobbly but fuming in his own ethical misjudgement. "I paid good money for those, you know, money I don't exactly have. Who the hell gives you the right to stride in and see them off?" Sirius would have gritted his teeth if he could feel his jaw properly, so he had to settle for an erratic growl instead, the student's fists clenching helplessly at his sides. "Beneath me? Are we champing at the bit to go there, what's beneath me, beneath us?" The words came undone like old ashes on his tongue, so earnest and avid to be breathed into life again. It always took him just enough to remember the threaded tunes of right and wrong, but now, it was really only...- this. "Well, they might be. But so are muggleborns."
