Season 4 thoughts! My favourite Tardis team yet - give the Doctor more friends and less potential loves. Donna’s energy is amazing and I really like how clear her growth is and how heartbreaking it feels when she loses it. And as I’ve jumped to the end, Stolen Earth / Journey’s End really is the foundation of the MCU, proving a crossover can work for a big audience. I think it has ambitions above its station like all Davies’ finales but ends up being the least egregious partly due to the personal scale.
This really is the best season yet - so many great one off adventures (Fires of Pompeii, Unicorn and the Wasp, Midnight) as well as some real character growth for the Doctor which feels earned - the Sontaran two parter into the Doctor’s Daughter (my underrated episode for the season) is crazy! We see the Doctor start to reckon with the fact he makes soldiers, and how bluntly he talks about the time war in The Doctor’s Daughter is some of Tennant’s best work. Sure, it has some cringe, but it’s great to see him get to heal and is amazing knowing what happens in Day of the Doctor.
We also have the Library two parter; non-stop chills. I love River’s intro, I love the digital world, and I love the horror. Most Moffat is peak but this could be peak Moffat.
So… yeah, the rewatch is going well. It’s not like we have bunch of specials I’m mixed on before the next season or anything…
Today on our Doctor Who rewatch we start my favourite modern Doctor! It feels right to watch The Eleventh Hour on the 11th
I finished Star Wars Legacy last night! It felt amazing to see the sequel characters get some love again, and I am really interested to watch The Rise of Skywalker again with this background. We also got a new all timer Star Wars character in Meepka, who I need to see again.
I’ve finished what I’m calling Stephen King Phase 1 (The books up to Night Shift) and this is my current ranking, best to worst:
‘Salem’s Lot, Carrie, The Eyes of the Dragon, The Stand, The Shining, It
Salem’s Lot and Carrie are all timers, give them a try!
As for Night Shift, my favourite stories were I Know What You Need for a good post-Obsession incel horror fix, The Last Rung on the Ladder for a crashing reality, One For The Road as a great epilogue to King’s best book, and Quitters, Inc. and Children of the Corn their great pacing and narratives.
Next I’ll be starting another Star Wars book binge with Legacy by Madeleine Roux!
Season 3 is impossible to talk about without addressing Martha, the companion I think gets the hardest time with the shows writing. We start strong with her being older and more accomplished than Rose, a good contrast, but her personality quickly becoming pining for the Doctor. A lot of my personal issues with Tennant’s incarnation come from this season where he not only gaslights but fully mentally attacks Martha, between kissing her, making her share his bed, or constantly threatening to drop her home like she’s nothing. Luckily their relationship gets a bit better in the seasons second half, and the first block of stories are good enough to pass even with these issues, but it’s a case of Russell and me having very different senses of humour (more on this when I talk about the specials…)
Moving on from Martha, this is the first season I’d say has no bad episodes! I know Lazarus has its haters, but 42 is my underrated gem - Chibnall’s first story is a fun, classic Doctor Who adventure and helps move Martha’s character on from her crush. This then leads into the Human Nature two parter and Blink, the shows strongest run of episodes yet and all personal favourites. It makes me wish I liked Utopia more, but while it and The Sound of Drums are good, they do step down from the three proceeding episodes.
And in what will become a Sja catchphrase, I do think the last episode drops the ball - Last of the Time Lords has some fun ideas but it also has a lot of weird choices (why does 10 become Gollum?). Still, at the end of the day love wins and Martha leaves in her stride with too much trauma.
Season 2 opinions may be controversial but I am not on that 10th Doctor hype. It’s a step down after season 1 and has possible the two worst episodes of RTD1… but it also has 10 and Rose growing closer - they were a lot of people’s first ship for a reason!
It also has The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit which I ranked as my favourite Tennant story this rewatch; religious horror is my jam, and as a kid this was the scariest story not to have Moffat’s name on.
My most improved episode is another controversy with The Idiots Lantern. Do I hate how it tells you to forgive your abuser? Very much so, but is anyone is gonna tell you to hold your dad close it would be Rose Tyler and setting of the coronation is great for a flagship British show.
The biggest upset for me is how poorly I think the finale has aged. Daleks and Cybermen meeting is fun for kids but I’m shocked how many of the memes are actually in this writing. Army of Ghosts gets an ass but hopefully this is the only Doomsday to let me down this year…
I’ve been rewatching Doctor Who with my friend to find out what the most “New Who” New Who episode is - we have a checklist and all. We finish season 4 on Wednesday so I wanted to share some of my highlights so far.
Eccleston owns the first season as 9, it’s hard to imagine anyone else leading the return. Him leaving at the end of the first season was also probably the best thing for the shows survival getting new audiences used to regeneration right away, although it’s sad to see him go.
This season is also full of great episodes - Rose is a great intro, the Empty Child two parter gets us used to Moffat’s smart writing and horror tendencies, then Father’s Day is the first example of the more soapy heart. The real highlights of this season however are seeing 9’s rage as he faces the Daleks in both Dalek and The Parting of the Ways. We really get a sense of a man who’s been through hell, but it also shows that he has the ability to grow.
I’d also like to highlight a “most improved” episode from each season - one that’s grown on me - and with this season we are going with the first trip to the past,The Unquiet Dead. Dickens is a great historical figure, and the Gelth refugees are a great set up for 9’s time war guilt.
Starting Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fuled for the first time; big fan of the drifting but the “daily rewards” and constant unlocks are putting me off. I don’t know how Mario Karts stop themselves feeling like mobile games but this hasn’t passed that test. Also, it is so tight to get first!
I just saw Brand New Day for the second time. I enjoyed it as much as Thunderbolts* and it’s probably in my top 3 Multiverse Saga films!
Semirealistic transparent Sun and Moon starters! So challenging but I had so much fun with them at the same time.
