Noragami Chapter 58 Translation Notes

I had to run off right after posting the chapter this afternoon so didn’t have time to put the notes on the main post, so here they are. The chapter itself had a ton of notes in the margins already, but I can expand on them more here. Note that page numbers refer to the number on the pages themselves, not the numbers as given by manga aggregate sites, as full-page spreads that cover two pages throw their numbering off.

WTF: 10,000 people have signed a petition to strip Caitlyn Jenner of her gold medals

Because some people are the absolute worst, a petition to revoke Caitlyn Jenner’s gold medal from the 1976 Montreal Olympics is gathering supporters on Change.org. And you guessed it, it originated on 4chan. Jenner’s getting the last laugh though.

In all honesty at the time those metals were won by Bruce. An unaltered Bruce. Caitlyn didn't win the Olympics. Caitlyn is a voice for human rights. Don't shit on Bruce now that he is gone. Caitlyn is a new person and amazing that one individual can live essentially two different lives in one lifetime. You can't strip Bruce of the titles because at the time Bruce was Bruce and this is after the fact.

Fun fact: Though being gay in the 40s sucked, being gay in the military was easier, and pretty common. There were apparently, at one point in time time so many lesbians in the military that when they tried to crack down on it, the girls wrote back and said “Look I can give you the names, but you’ll lose some of your best officers, and half your nurses and secretaries.” And they pretty much shut up about it unless you were especially bad at subtlety. Sergeant Phelps worked for General Eisenhower. Four decades after Eisenhower had defeated the Axis powers, Phelps recalled an extraordinary event. One day the general told her, “I’m giving you an order to ferret those lesbians out.’ We’re going to get rid of them.”

But I think the general should be aware that among those women are the most highly decorated women in the war. There have been no cases of illegal pregnancies. There have been no cases of AWOL. There have been no cases of misconduct. And as a matter of fact, every six months since we’ve been here, sir, the general has awarded us a commendation for meritorious service.’

Things that you generally shouldn’t bring up:

People’s gender. If they’re not talking about it, you shouldn’t be either

People’s weight. Seriously, even if you’re trying to say something nice or complimentary about my weight, bringing up the fact that I am bigger than I used to be will make me want to throw you off a cliff then jump off myself

Things that people are quite obviously sensitive about like acne, stretchmarks, crooked teeth, etc.

Things that people can’t change. Is my make-up smudged? Yeah, tell me, I need to fix that shit! Do I have a giant crooked man nose or tiny boobs? Yeah, probably don’t need to point that one out, unless you’re willing to pay for the damn surgery I don’t need to know

Its just common sense people.
