All while Yuuta and Toge deal with this... thing they've always had that's only gotten bigger since Yuuta's return. CH 1: The One with the Prodigal Son - Yuuta returns from his study abroad in North Africa and Toge has some feelings about it.

CH 2: The One Where Yuuta Washes his Socks - Yuuta has to remember how coin laundry works, and Toge makes him do a TikTok dance in public.

CH 3: The One About Figures of Speech - Yuuta thinks a lot about malaphors: blends of two figures of speech, like "we'll burn that bridge when we come to it."

CH 4: The One With Coffee and Cardamom - Toge takes Yuuta on an adventure across the prefecture to try to help him with his reverse culture shock.

CH 5: The One About Yuuta’s Closet - Nobara decides to do something about Yuuta’s lack of fashion. Yuuta experiences yearning.

CH 6: The One with Toge's Boy Juice - Toge has some trouble with his shot. Thankfully, Yuuta’s there to help. It requires a LOT more touching than Toge is prepared for.

CH 7: The One Where Maki Destroys Sports Equipment - The ref really has it out for Maki at one of her final college lacrosse games. Maki gets big mad about it. Yuuta tries to be the best friend he can be to her.

CH 8: The One with Dance Dance Revolution - The kids go to an arcade and Toge remembers how good Yuuta is at dancing. A repressed memory of the first time they almost kissed comes back to the surface. Toge channels the energy into trying to win something for Yuuta.

CH 9: The One Where Yuuta Gets a Hobby - Yuuta comes to terms with some truths about his mental health; Toge decides to help him get a hobby. They have some real conversations about depression.

CH 10: The One with Organic Chemistry - Yuuta comes up with a plan to help Toge study for organic chemistry. The pining starts to become a real problem for Toge.

CH 11: The One With Toge's Bedroom - Yuuta pays Toge a surprise visit at work and starts to accept his feelings for his friend. They rearrange Toge’s bedroom and the tension of his acceptance starts to cut him for real.

CH 12: The One Where Toge Loses His Arm - Toge loses one of his arms—Yuuta is there to help him through it. Toge makes a realization about his feelings for Yuuta. “There’s only one bed” trope.

CH 13: The One With Wax Flowers (Part 1) - Toge’s body breaks down in the fall, so Yuuta decides to take him on a little adventure to cheer him up.

CH 14: The One With Wax Flowers (Part 2) - Yuuta takes Toge on a platonic date to the botanical gardens. "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley plays vaguely in the background while he watches Toge be a nerd about plants.

CH 15: The One With the Snake - Toge and Yuuta pay for another round of body modifications. Toge makes aesthetic choices fully based on getting Yuuta’s attention.

Theres a sentiment I'm noticing in the tags that I'd like to address. I dont think learning to love bugs with all your heart means forcing yourself out of discomfort you have with them overnight. It's about observing a different sort of being going about its life and deliberately trying to reframe your observations through a sense of wonder and delight. It's about cultivating a positive interest and curiosity for their ecology and behaviors. It's especially about trying to uncouple the value we find in them from how 'convenient' they are to us; to face head on the part of us that wants to assign moral evil to another organism who just happens to live life in a way that is not harmonius with ours. You can love insects in this way and still recognize your own health and safety needs. We are animals living side by side within a biosphere. This is how it is, sometimes.

I think this is important to cultivate because, if you are alive at all, you are coming into conflict with countless other people and things that dont owe you an apology for their existance and needs. If you are alive at all, you are encountering countless other people and things that harmful bias and personal discomfort have made repulsive to you. This is about bugs, but its also about way more than bugs.

It's hard to explain to the uninitiated that you can just go for a walk just about anywhere with a bit of green (and sometimes even in the heart of a city) and find like a dozen neat little unique guys if you're patient and observant.

People get really into bird watching but here's a secret: bugs are WAY easier to find than birds and they let you get a lot closer.

Try to approach the world with wonder and curiosity rather than fear and revulsion. Bugs are a great place to start.

the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.

Some context: Texas and Arkansas share a corner border. Now, Texas is FECKING HUGE and there are many, many parts of Texas that cannot visit Arkansas overnight, but there are parts where it’s no trouble at all.

However, those places of Texas that are close to Arkansas, do not include “close to Fort Smith, Arkansas.”

The closest Texas gets to Fort Smith is about 185 miles (about 300km), at “a little closer than Texarkana.” (Dallas, fwiw, is about 275 miles/450km from Fort Smith.)

So the dad in this story drove at least SEVEN HOURS round trip, to pick up a bushel of plums for his little girl, in the hope that some almost-out-of-season fruit would convince her to go on living.

So I looked up the author of this book, Cherry, and it’s a memoir. Mary Kate grew up in Groves, Texas. Which is nowhere near the Arkansas border.

Seven hours wouldn’t even get you all the way there.
