Jeremy Gilbert is sixteen years old and a human. He is commonly mistaken for Steven R. McQueen and is very much taken.
I've kept too many secrets for a family that barely exists.
Jeremy has always sort of felt like he just didn’t quite fit in with most people. He always felt like the outsider looking in, even among his friends, not that he had very many of those to begin with. And if he looked back on just why he always felt so alone, he’d have to pinpoint it to about a year after his dad died. Elena had been off at cheer camp and his mother had somehow convinced him to help clean up the guest room for his Aunt Jenna to move in when he found it. The birth certificate that was for two children. Baby Girl Flemming One and Baby Girl Flemming Two. After a very long and very loud conversation with his mother, Jeremy learned that his sister, or at least the girl that he always believed was his sister, was actually his cousin in a strange way. What was worse? His mother begged Jeremy to help keep the secret from Elena. As much as he just wanted to scream it in his “sister’s” face, he couldn’t do that to his mom. So he kept her secret, only after she swore she’d tell Elena the truth before she turned eighteen. Because if she didn’t, he would. Well, her eighteenth birthday came and went and Jeremy wasn’t able to tell his mother’s secret. Mostly because his mother wasn’t really around to keep her promise. So instead of outting his dead mother and father, Jeremy just decided that pulling away from everything else was the better alternative.
It worked for a long time. In fact, he’s pretty sure that at some point during his pull back from society, he’d fallen in love with a random girl. There was only a couple problems with her: One, he was pretty sure he’d never be able to keep her around. Two, she never wanted them to be seen together. Three, she broke up with him. And four, he’s not entirely sure that she’s real. In his own defense, he had started smoking way too much pot since his parents died in an attempt to just sort of forget all about it so she could have been a figment of his imagination. He knows this and he would readily admit to that, if he was willing to actually admit anything about her. Jeremy knew that if he said anything about her, no matter how little he actually still remembered about her, he’d sound completely crazy. And it was strange. What was stranger was that as the days passed on, he forgot more and more about her until all he could remember was her big brown eyes. That is until he finally meets Baby Girl Flemming Two and he knows that the other girl was definitely a figment of his imagination. No, he doesn’t think that girl was his subconscious warning him about Katherine coming into his life, but he definitely doesn’t think that it’s weird that it all sort of fell into place like that. Truthfully, Jeremy just wanted everything to fall back into place and he wanted his family back. But that wasn’t going to happen. He knew that but he still wanted his family back and he always would.
Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce → When Jeremy was little, he hated having an older sister. Elena was always such a pain to him in his stupid boy mind, but when he got older and found out his mother's secret, he didn't know how to feel about Elena. What was weirder? There was another one of him! Six year old Jeremy is screaming out from insanity and confusion while sixteen year old Jeremy just wants to know what's going on. His sister is really his cousin? And his cousin has a twin sister who looks exactly like her? Jeremy so desperately wants something to make sense, and ironically, Katherine is kind of more fun to hang out with Elena. And she doesn't make him feel like he's doing something wrong every five seconds. Maybe he can deal with two Elena faces running around. Maybe.
Matt Donovan → Matt and Elena didn't date very long. The poor sap had the unlucky timing of starting his relationship with Elena not long before their father died, and that kind of killed their relationship. However, it didn't entirely kill the budding friendship that Matt and Jeremy had started to form. They were close enough in age and played the same sort of video games that it was just sort of natural for them to form a friendship. Now if only they could have kept it going. Now Matt is just another guy who keeps watch over him for his sister that still sort of has him wrapped around her finger.
Ariadne Medici → Ariadne was the reason that Jeremy knew so much about Greek mythology. When they first became friends, her name fascinated and confused him so much that he had to figure out just who the Ariadne person that she was named after was. Unfortunately, when his mom was killed, he couldn't be around her anymore. She just gave off an aura that made him feel like his mom was going to walk through the door with some weird snack that Aria liked. It was painful to deal with, but he can't ignore the nagging feeling in the back of his head. He misses her. Desperately.
Isaac Lahey → Best friends weren't things that Jeremy has truly had in a very long time. In fact, one of the first he ever lost was Isaac Lahey. In the back of his mind, he kind of felt like he was responsible for the whole tumbling downward spiral of Isaac's life. Sure, it was a bit narcissistic. But he was the first person to fall out of Isaac's grasp. However, his current life doesn't seem so horrible. He has friends and his crap dad is out of his life, so he doesn't need Jeremy back. Right?
Charlotte Fell → Jeremy started attending tutoring sessions at the request of his mother. He did have to admit, after the death of his father his grades did start to slip, but who did she think he was? Elena? No. He was going to let himself slip into something dark, but at the same time, he couldn't say no to his mother. Enter Charlotte Fell. She became his tutor and after a few rather unproductive sessions, they struck a deal. Twenty minutes and then they go off and do what they need until the last twenty minutes. For him, it's like a god send. And for her? Well, he doesn't really care...
