These meticulous #swarovski crystal collages by our client Julia Roshkow -@cartesiangraphics are a beautiful showcase of how our #Epson P9000 11 color printers are able to precisely match the crystals she hand places on the color grids. Since we do print in #RGB we are able to print color ranges that CMYK printers used by other NYC print shops could never achieve (#CMYKsucks). “Value” by Tahir Carl Karmali

Karmali’s installation seeks to engage audience ideas on ‘value’, a concept more layered than first glance indicates. “VALUE” presents a series of provocative images evaluating ‘value’ from financial, utilitarian and moralistic vantages, forming a picture that is anything but tidy, yet more complete from the effort.

Nairobi Male Sex Workers have carved a place for themselves within Kenyan society, but their practice is far from taboo-free. The city’s Male Sex Workers (MSW) exist in the darkest corners of Nairobi’s imagination, contending daily with entrenched ideas on homosexuality and male role stereotypes. “VALUE” is not simply a cataloging of those in the sex industry, but an active force in articulating, shaping, and contesting their ‘value’ within the public sphere.

Each subject is photographed with their most treasured possession, leaving the viewer to perceive the object’s value through the subject. This confrontational approach to empathy forces the viewer to take stock of the MSW value system as well as their own. What makes worth, and who determines the consequences?

In a series of black and white photographs, Me As Her, Judith Henry continues her long-standing practice of remaining hidden/masked within her work. She reimagines herself behind masks of significant and accomplished women who have died. The photo-masks themselves reveal very little about the personality they depict, underlining the truth that there is little any of us can know about who we see and who sees us. The photographs are shot in natural light on location within a one-mile radius of her home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The appearance of Henry’s hands is itself a reflection of her own aging process and an important signature of each piece.

By putting on a mask and becoming someone else, artists reveal—and reinvent—the hidden truths of the world around us.

We are excited to announce that Disguise: Masks and Global African Art is now open at the Brooklyn Museum! This exhibition features twenty-five contemporary artists from Africa or of African descent whose work draws on the history of African masquerade as a source of inspiration. Using a wide range of media, these artists work to reconnect masks and bodies with performance to address key questions of our current moment—the potential and limits of cross-cultural understanding, women’s agency, queerness, and others—while inviting us to experience the heightened awareness that masquerade provides.

For many African artists, masquerade has historically been a means for public engagement. Sculptors and dancers use masquerade as a platform for artistic creativity, inventing new genres or interpreting existing ones to tackle important issues of their time. However, when masks have become collected objects separated from the act of performance, their larger critical and artistic messages have often been lost.

Expanding on an exhibition conceived by the Seattle Art Museum, this installation showcases over 100 contemporary artworks in dialogue with 27 historic masks—most from the Brooklyn Museum’s collection. Performances will occur throughout the run of the show (including at our next First Saturday!), so check back for more details.
