He always treated Sigrúnn with honour, not because he thought she stood above him, but because he admired what she had done for Iona. She had been there for his wife when he had not and, as such, he owed her a great deal. Without her, everything might have gone entirely different, and he did not want to think of other outcomes and what they might have been. That she had asked him to join her in the flower shop, however, had come as a surprise. Despite the fact he had always treated her with respect, he knew she was wary of him for what he had done. Her reasons were just.

The bell tingled when he came in, and he pushed through the door. “Hello?”

                   “I know. What the Gods desire, they get. But perhaps it is not her time yet, and perhaps there is something we can do…” he was not pleading, not truly. But his mother was all he had left, and without her there would be nothing to return to, either. Even the sheep had started wasting away. Many people thought it was strange that, over the course of years, he had not found a wife somewhere, but he had been fine with his mother, tending to the animals, to the hunting grounds.

              And now he felt alone. “But I will accept whatever you can help me with, even if that means I will have to let her go. I simply did not wish to… have done nothing. I had to try, and I hope you find it in your heart to understand that, too, Seeress. It is not my disrespect of the Gods that I do not yet wish to miss her.”

                CRIMSON DREADS FELL OVER HER SHOULDER     -as she tilted her head in his direction. For a second or two she just watched him, the way his mouth would move and his features change while speaking his mind. She read people, their eyes while she kept her own hidden behind the veil that covered most of her face.

           “I would never run off,” she vouched, solemnly, sitting on her bum next to the red haired woman. She didn’t see her grandmother often, and sometimes she felt like the woman liked Vali and Angie better than her, but that didn’t stop her from trying to cosy up to the woman. She thought that maybe it was because Sigrùnn was special, and so were Vali and Angie, and maybe she thought that Ás was not.

                 Well, the little girl would show her that she was, very much, special. “But he has slept all night. Why would he be tired? I am not.”

                 THE WOMAN OPENED HER EYES AGAIN     -her hands closing and pulled back towards her stomach before she allowed a deep breath to fill her lungs. She took her time, but always listened to Ás’ words. Sigrúnn adored what a mother her own daughter had become. Perhaps she even felt a little guilty that she never had been a proper parent for Helga, although even now she found it somewhat difficult to open herself up to her grandchildren.

     ❝ Because he is a grown man, and he does not have the kind of energy a child has. ❞    Not something that was easy to explain, unfortunately.     ❝ Would you not want to sleep in after a long day of work ? ❞

            The command briefly unnerved him. He was not used to be spoken to like this and much less by a woman. Torstein did, aside from his mother, not meet many women during his days in the field and asking one for help had seemed counterproductive, maybe almost unnatural. But she might be the only one that could aid his mother, help her, as she laid on her bed, sick with the pest that had gotten to the sheet first and her second.

            “I have been here before,” he spoke, hesitating. “I have been here before with my father, and then my mother. And now my mother has fallen ill. She told me that if anyone knew how to cure her, it might be you. Please,” his voice faded, momentarily. “She and the sheep are all I have left.”

            He had not meant to beg but it came easy where his mother was concerned. She was amongst the most important things in his life. She had taught him everything he knew.

                 SON OF STEINAR     -yes, he had been here before indeed. It were the voices she remembered, not so much the faces. A face could change, a limb could be chopped off. His voice had grown lower, but the way in which he spoke had not changed much. He was nervous, she could hear that. In a way it annoyed her when people came to her with the idea she would hurt them. Never had she hurt anyone, a blood sacrifice was only done when someone truly wanted to sacrifice for knowledge. If not willingly, a proper prophecy could not be made.

     ❝ I do not know what ails her. ❞     She needed more information to determine whether she truly could help him, or not. She remained calm, one of her hands reaching out to grab one of the bones lying in front of her.     ❝ You have to understand, Steinarsson, that a cure can not help everyone. If the Gods want your mother, they will take her. Nothing shall be able to change that. Is that a fate you are willing to accept ? ❞

                SIGRÚNN COULD ONLY BOW HER HEAD TO THE QUEEN     -a most unlikely friend, although not as unlikely once you would look at the gifts both women shared. Speaking of a prophecy like this was never easy, and deep down there was a wish that death would change her mind. A foolish wish, especially for a woman like her. Not even her bony fingers would be able to pluck at and change the fate woven for them at birth, merely speak what the Norns allowed her to see what challenges the future would face them with.

     ❝ I am not to thank. I believe none should be thanked for what is about to come. ❞    Sorrow dripped from her tongue as she spoke. Anger even arose, disbelief after replaying the images in her mind. Blood trickled down her fingers, a sacrifice brought. Still, she reached that hand out towards Aslaug.                   He was young, younger than most of her customers, and yet she had seen him before - he was the son of Steinar, the smith just outside of the village. This time, however, he was alone. He was tall, the fur around his shoulders making him more bulky than he probably was underneath, and he looked at her with an expression that told her he needed help.

          “Lady Sigrúnn,” he started, a little out of his depth. In the past, he had waited outside while his father spoke to the seer, but his father was not here and he had come, all alone, with nothing more than the bag he could carry. He needed her help, her insight, her guidance.

           His mother had told him the Seeress would always guide him. And his mother’s words had never proven to be untrue.

           "I hoped you had the chance to help me today.“

             PAINTED LIPS DID NOT MOVE    -eyes hidden behind a veil. She would not look at him directly, but the urgency in his voice certainly did not go unnoticed. She did not like it when people came to her with urgent matters- preferring to do things at her own pace. None could command her gifts, not even she could access it when the Gods did not allow her to.

     With a wave of her hand she motioned him to step inside, but was quick to move her attention back to the bones and runes laid spread before her on an old rabbit skin. Yes, she did things at her own time and her own pace. People had to wait for her would they want a proper answers from her, and the Gods who spoke through her.

     ❝ Help you with what, exactly ? ❞     Her tone of voice wasn’t exactly curt, but it wasn’t warm either. Her thoughts dangled between this world, and plenty others. She offered him a seat in front of her, briefly curious what was in the bag he had brought with him.     ❝ Speak ! ❞
