James Whale was born on July 22, 1889, and was an English film director, theater director, and actor. Today, he is best remembered for having directed several classic horror films, including Frankenstein (1931), The Invisible Man (1933) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). He directed other genres of film too, including, Show Boat (1936) which is considered the best film adaptation of the stage musical. Whale lived an openly gay life, and he lived with his partner, film producer, David Lewis from 1930 to 1952. Whale died by suicide by drowning himself in his swimming pool on May 29, 1957, at the age of 67. A somewhat fictionalized movie based on his life, Gods and Monsters (1998) starred Ian McKellen as Whales.
