Maddie nodded at the question, looking back at her dad “I tried but dad’s not very good at the turns.”

Cole shook his head, smiling at Skye, “I tried but I’m just not very graceful.” He wondered if they would have some time alone, maybe after Maddie went to bed if she wanted to stay that long. To actually talk, about things between them. The time they had apart was not done purposely but it had helped Cole realize that he really wanted to give things a fair chance and maybe finally explain to her where his hesitation lied. He didn’t talk about Maddie’s mom much, but Skye deserved him being open with her. He was going to try.

“Thanks for coming to paint with us,” Cole said as Maddie moved over to her paints. He wrapped Skye in a hug, “I missed you.” @kingkillmongerwrites

“Thanks for inviting me” Skye responded as she returned his hug, instantly feeling like she was going to melt in his arms. “I missed you more”, she said. Gently grabbing Cole’s hand she moved to sit next to Maddie.She wanted to say alot more in that moment and ask him the hard questions about their situation but decided to hold her tongue since now probably wasn’t exactly the right time to dive into their issue, at least not while Maddie was sitting there. “So... what are we painting first?”

Cole just finished get dressed when his phone buzzed, and now he was just mixing paints. Skye was going to be here in just a few minutes, and he was strangely nervous. It had been a while since they’d seen each other in person for obvious reasons, but more than that he had to consider Maddie. He hadn’t dated in quite a few years, and hoped that his daughter would be okay with this. Luckily Skye and Maddie already had a bond so this wasn’t going to be entirely new to her.

When the door knocked, Cole watched Maddie zoom past him. “Dad! The door! The door!”

Cole had to laugh, seeing his daughter this excited was adorable. “I heard Sunshine, I’m getting it.” Maddie was practically bouncing when he opened the door for Skye. “Hi, long time no see, come on in!” @gleekywolf1x1 @kingkillmongerwrites

Skye’s heart was racing the moment he opened the door, “I know, right.” she responded nervously. She’d thought she had her mixture of emotions and excitement of not seeing him in so long under control until actually seeing him. But her saving grace was the little one who’d ran up between them. “Hi Maddie” Skye greeted excitedly, giving her former student a hug. “Have you been practicing and keeping your dad in shape?” she giggled.

Hi Again || Cole and Skye

A lot had happened in the past 6 months that had Cole stressed, with the pandemic and Maddie and bills to worry about he’d been a little more uptight than usual. So seeing as it was the weekend he decided it was time to have a little fun. So he’d woken up before Maddie as always, and put down the tarps and got the painting supplies out. He found painting relaxing and lucky for him his daughter found it fun. As much as he worried about her, Maddie was a good kid, smart and kind and spent way too much time worrying about him. Maddie knew that he and Skye were dating now and seemed okay with the idea. Cole was prepared for a lot on that topic but the ease in which his 7-year-old had taken the news threw him off a bit.

His surprise only grew when it was Maddie who suggested that Skye come over to paint with them today, seeing as it was strictly a father daughter activity up until now. So he asked again as Maddie had her breakfast, and he sipped his coffee. “Hey Sunshine, are you sure it’s okay that Skye comes over to paint with us today?”

Maddie smiled, nodding furiously “Yes! I want to show her my painting station!”

Cole laughed a bit, “Well we can pick out you colours after we change out of our pyjamas, Skye will be here in a few hours.“ @kingkillmongerwrites

Skye was pretty excited to see Cole and Maddie, Since the dance studio closed because of the pandemic and her last fight with Cole, she hadn’t physically seen him but they kept in contact through text and face time. Skye couldn’t really find herself mad enough to not contact him at all, no matter how she felt, she could understand where he was coming from, it was a tough situation.

Taking a little extra step to get ready as she wanted to make sure she was appropriate and casual for painting and getting messy but also cute enough for Cole, So a sleeveless hooded crop top and a pair of sweats it was. Almost typical dancer gear honestly.

She glanced one more time in the mirror, and made she she wasn’t wearing anything she cared too much about and headed over to Cole’s. “Hey, I’m on my way. Should be there in about 20 minutes” she texted, to give him a heads up.

Cole put his hands in his pockets, he wasn’t upset she had a point but he knew what was best for Maddie. At least he hoped he did. “Look the last time I dated anyone maddie wasn’t old enough to form words let alone opinions. It’s just a little difficult. Especially lately.” She’d starting asking about her mom recently and Cole while he knew it was coming eventually was not really sure how to handle it. He’d done his best though, lying to his daughter seemed shady. But the truth was have been earth shattering.

Cole looked over at Maddie who had found the after practice snacks he’d packed in his bag. She walked back over with a bag of goldfish. “Got my shoes on. Can we have ice cream?” Maddie have him her best puppy dog eye stare. Cole had to laugh, “Maybe. We’ll see Sunshine.” Actually that wasn’t a bad idea… Cole rose a brow at Skye “Did…you want to get some ice cream with us?”

Skye thought for a moment about Cole’s proposal and as hard as it was to say no, she kept thinking about the situation at hand and how she may have been a bit pushy and she definitely didn’t want him to invite her out of guilt or anything.

“I... I don’t know, I got a few things I still need to finish up here and I wouldn’t want to keep you guys.” She replied, smiling softly. “How about a raincheck?”

Cole smiled down at Maddie before getting down on one knee getting the small water bottle he always carried for her and twisted the cap off.

“Thank you,” he gave Skye a smile. He should talk to her, about when he was going to tell his daughter. In truth it was supposed to be today but now he wasn’t so sure. He undid the bun on top of her head. Watching as she shook her head furiously letting her hair frame her face. He smiled “Better?” Maddie nodded back with a smile that put her missing bottom tooth on display. It was adorable.

“Sunshine why don’t you change your shoes. I just have to talk to Miss Skye for a second okay? I’ll be right back.” Cole got to his feet moving a few feet away to talk to Skye.

“Hey, look I’m going to tell her about- I just it’s harder than I thought. I mean she’s a great kid I’m just worried she’s going to take it badly. Not badly I just don’t want it to be difficult…” The reason he was hesitant actually had nothing to do with Skye but he didn’t feel like explaining that to her right now. “But I will soon. I just don’t want you to think I’m avoiding it or anything.” Although he was kind of avoiding it, the subject matter was delicate.

“So... you’re not having the talk today” Skye asked for reassurance, trying not to sound upset. Even though she understood why he was so hesitant, the situation still sucked. She just wanted to finally feel like she didn’t have to hide and could be comfortable in their situation.

Yes, this could possibly effect her job, her relationship with the students and parents. but it was a chance she was willing to take.

“I just... I just want to be able to be excited when I see you- and show it! Be able to show affection and not care who’s around or what anybody thinks. But I can’t, and I get it, its easier said than done but I just hate feeling like I’m in middle school trying to hide from my parents that I have a boyfriend.” Skye spilled, her jaw clenching slightly as she spoke, trying to keep her voice down so Maddie wouldn’t hear.

Taking a deep breath and a quick moment to think, Skye looked Cole in the eye and nodded “I’m sorry, its okay... I get it. Theres a lot on the line and it effects all of us in some way, especially Maddie.” Skye smiled softly and stepped back a little, giving a bit more space between the two of them. “If it means anything, take all the time you need.”

Cole was on time for once, he’d gotten off of work 20 minutes early which meant he had enough time to make it to Maddie’s ballet class just before it ended. Jogging up the stairs to the second floor rehearsal space he spotted his daughter quickly although she seemed focused. Her eyebrows were creased just as they were in the mornings when she was choosing between the cereals.

He stood against the wall with a few of the other moms, he’d come to know by name offering the ones that looked his way a smile. Cole took his eyes off of Maddie and they drifted to Skye. They’d only been dating a few months, he hadn’t told Maddie yet although when he asked if she would mind if he had a new friend his 7 year old shrugged, and told him that she thought he didn’t like having friends. So, his own daughter thought he was hopeless, that would be funny to him if it wasn’t accurate.

But Cole knew he would have to say something eventually, but the thought of doing so after class like he’d planned on the walk here, suddenly had his hands sweating.

Wrapping up class and giving some of her final tips and goodbyes to the other students, she spotted Cole as he walked in. A warm feeling rose within her and she tried to keep a goofy grin from spreading across her face. Focus at least until everyone leaves, she had to tell herself. Especially in front of the other moms, they notice everything.

Although it was inevitable that they found out, it also worried Skye just a little bit because she didn’t want people to assume she was playing favorites to Maddie just because she and Cole had been seeing each other.

Helping round up the last of her students and sending them on with their parent, Skye then helped Maddie gather her things and walked her over to Cole. “Mr. Richards” She greeted with a smile, her hands on Maddie’s shoulders as the tiny girl stood in front of her.

“Ummm... Maddie was great as usual” she began, not sure if she should still be keeping things professional in front of Maddie still or if it was okay to stop pretending.
