I’m just going to add my two cents in; most people, when buying an exotic animal to be a pet, are made aware of what they need to do to satisfy the animal’s needs. Never have I ever heard of a story of someone buying an animal like a Serval who didn’t know that they couldn’t feed it canned kitty food. As far as I know, people who buy these animals are made well aware of the risks owning an animal like this can be—it is the same with buying a puppy, and animals like wolf dogs. Nobody selling would leave out details about its diet, living habits, and any other embedded routines it may have. When buying a puppy, an adopter is told that the puppy will absolutely eat anything on the floor it deems edible, regardless of what it is. The puppy will need a lot of training to be house broken and crate trained (if it already is not), and it will need to go to puppy classes.
The same is for an exotic cat. A breeder, or seller will say that it is a carnivore. It will not feed on much else. It is a territorial animal and may be recommended to be the only other pet in the house. It is nocturnal, so it will be less active in the day. Certain things might bother it, it may not be well around babies and small children; etc. People usually will not buy these animals just for kicks, because once they find out how much work is needed to care for it, they will probably realize they are not ready for such a high-maintenance animal to be in their family. There is also the case that it can be illegal in the area they live in.
