The two smaller wolves cower under the stare of the towering onyx alpha, tails tucked and ears bowed. A low rumble emanates from the midnight wolf's throat, not a growl, but a warning. In no time five other wolves had gathered, all different colors and looks but equally terrifying all the same.
As your gaze sweeps the clearing in a panic, you feel gusts of hot breath down your neck. You turn your head and find the chest of a towering midnight canine, the alpha. He doesn’t turn his head down to you, keeping his gaze on the other wolves. The tense silence continues, none making their moves. The other seven wolves seem to know the one that is hovering over you, if they were strangers they would all be growling and baring their teeth. But no, they all seem to know each other. Suddenly a soft cracking echoes through the clearing and you turn to the source.
There, where a deep brown wolf once stood, was a soft looking boy with blonde hair, you couldn’t make out much but you could feel the warmth radiating from him. As he steps closer the wolf behind you bristles. The boy sighs and speaks in a voice not sounding like it should come from him. “Chan, I won't hurt her. I’m not a monster.” His deep Australian tinged voice rolls off his tongue like honey. The wolf above you huffs, but seems to relax a bit.
In the moments that follow, the cracks become more frequent as the others do the same, they all have striking differences but damn are they all good looking. There’s a boy that has messy wavy hair with soft brown eyes, a quiet one with a puppy looking face, one of them is noticeably shorter but he makes up for it with his muscle, one with striking eyes and a beauty you didn’t know a man could have, one with a feline like set of eyes ironically enough, one of them has sharp eyes and an even sharper jaw, he looks like a fox, and now that he’s closer you can see the first boy from before has freckles scattered on his cheeks.
The wolf that had been looming behind you steps back, now seemingly at ease, and soon cracking filled your ears. Right behind you. You don’t have to turn to see him, instead he walks to your side to grab clothes from the bag the fox eyes boy had gone to grab. Once they’re all dressed, they finally notice you’ve been rooted in the same spot in terror. Your gaze slowly shifts to the presumed alpha only to find him already looking at you.
“You don’t have to be afraid. We won’t hurt you.” His voice is like honey too..you hadn’t had time to listen earlier. What did that boy call him? Chan..? The one with feline eyes suddenly speaks “Speak for yourself Hyung…” the freckled one smacks him “Minho-hyung stop that! He’s harmless, I swear.” The man, presumably Chan, huffs “They’re stupid. But yes, harmless.” you gulp “How can I…trust you..?” The chubby cheeked boy shrugs “I dunno! I’m Han though. You can call me Han or Jisung.”
“Han..?” you mumble softly. The pretty one steps past the others and walks right up to you. “You guys are acting like she’s toxic or something. I’m Hyunjin.” you don't answer. Just staring blankly, to which Hyunjin remarks “Chan I think we broke her..” The blonde boy walks up “Hello! My name is Felix, what’s yours?” his honey voice helps to relax you slightly. The first man steps forward “I’m Chan, as I’m sure you’ve heard. I’m the alpha.”
Everything processing in your head clicks at once. Standing a few feet in front of you is the most feared wolf of your time, the alpha of The Strays. The others introduce themselves, trying to ease your stress. “And the one poking at the dead rabbit is Jeongin. He’s the youngest.” Han points to Jeongin, surely enough poking at the rabbit with a twig. His ears twitch and he looks up, “It twitched! I swear it twitched!” Chan rolls his eyes and everyone's eyes settle back on you.
“Um..Y/N..I”m Y/N” Felix’s eyes light up “That’s so pretty!!” he beams, bouncing over to you. “Please don’t be afraid of us, we’re nice I promise.” The wolves spend several hours attempting to get you to warm up to them, and you come around mostly. Eventually the sun begins to set, and they walk you back to the border. “Bye Y/N! See you next time!” You doubt there will be a next time.

You’d always compare it to the Hunger Games. The way they choose the maiden that goes to the tree every year. First they have a doctor make sure you’re still “pure” it’s invasive but at least the doctor is always female. After that they make you all put your names in a huge bowl for the alpha of the pack to choose from.
You have to be at least 16 and the cutoff is 29. Just your luck it was you this year. You’d just turned 25, and you’d been safe the other 9 years so why would it be you this year? Just your luck. They treat it like the Hunger Games because it basically is. It’s a huge risk. The tree lies at the very border of territories. Where both clans can go. It’s the only place you have the chance of running into a Stray. And now you have to go. Fuck.
And what’s even worse they make you go at night! Your parents seem ecstatic that their daughter got picked for such a “noble” duty. More like a death sentence.
The hours pass as you’re prepared, your hair is pinned back with crystals combs and pins, a lengthy flowing white dress that hugs you curves is draped over your figure. Your elders believed in looking your best for the ancestors, so they made sure you did. “I look like easy prey.” the voice in your head remarks.
As dusk falls, you’re led to the edge of the forest, the cage holding the rabbit clutched in your hand. Your mother hugs you and sees you off.
You step into the forest, walking for hours. It’s surprisingly silent and peaceful, that is until you get about 3 miles in. The branches start to warp, turning darker. This part of the forest feels like you thought the whole trip would.
You’re getting close. You can tell. The biggest downside to this trip is the smells. There’s too many different scents from plants and wildlife for you to be able to pinpoint anything, even with your enhanced sense of smell.
The Strays can though. They have the senses of a vampire and a wolf. It’s enough to smell anything over the concentrated smells of the forest. Unfair advantage.
As you attempt to evade the sharp rocks and branches, one manages to nick you. “Ah-shit.” you clasp your right hand over the injury on your arm and keep trudging along. The walk is creepy but somewhat peaceful, no half breeds yet!
Your foot catches on a root and you stumble, hitting the ground hard. All your weight lands on your palms. You wince “Mmm-fuck-” You stand slowly, starting to brush yourself off, ensuring no stains remain on your pristine white dress when..SNAP..your eyes shoot up at the echoing sound of the branch snapping.
Your eyes scan the area frantically, your breath quickening. It’s too dark for you to see anything without shifting, but it’s too dangerous to shift without knowing what’s there.
Your eyes flit around and something catches your eye. No. Someone. Someone catches your gaze. Your eyes lock with another set. Eyes such a bright brilliant blue they almost glow in the dark. They hold a look unlike anything you’ve ever seen, burning with hatred so pure it could light the forest ablaze and a predatory look that sends a chill to your bones, one that would send Silverback himself -The most powerful alpha ever known- scrambling in the other direction.
It takes a step forward, revealing a powerful frame covered in onyx fur and teeth so sharp they could slice easier than a razor. It emerges completely, those piercing blue eyes remaining locked onto you with that predatory look. Your instincts react before you can think. You take off full speed in the direction of the Ancestral Tree.
You curse yourself immediately as you hear a low growl that quickly turns into a snarl, seconds later thundering booms quickly approach. Powerful jaws snap beside your arm and then fall several feet back. This happens 4 times before you realize, lunging and snapping, lunging and snapping, even going as far as to lick your arm. The realization hits you like a brick. It’s playing with you. It’s having fun.
As soon as you realize the beast seems fed up with the little game, and suddenly lunges forward, the muscles in its hind legs rippling with power as it flies through the air. You turn from the silence just in time for massive paws to meet your chest, forcing you down with hundreds if not thousands of pounds on muscle and pure power. Your back slams into the ground with a sickening crack, knocking every ounce of wind from your lungs. The cage lies forgotten somewhere on the forest floor.
You come face to face with the largest wolf you’ve ever seen, snarling down at you as drool drips from its canines. Its massive claws dig into your flesh, not breaking skin but coming close. Close enough to make you yelp. The wolf hesitates for a moment, shaking its head before it sniffs your face.
A low growl emanates from its chest before it opens its powerful jaws and begins to descend them upon you. You can’t help but scream in fear. The wolf stops completely. It steps off of you, growling again. Though this time it sounds more resigned.
You don’t dare move, staying on the ground, panting heavily. Until you hear a familiar crackling, the sound of a transformation. You shoot upwards and come face to face with a man, sporting a t-shirt and shorts he’s obviously just thrown on. His eyes aren’t that piercing blue anymore, they’re brown. They would almost make you feel at home if he wasn’t just trying to rip your throat out. Almost.
The longer you stare, the strange feeling in your stomach intensifies. The man tilts his head with a soft smirk, chuckling softly. “Why are you here pup? You shouldn’t be.” you can’t help but be offended. PUP!? You’re a fully grown woman! “I am not a pup. And I’m here to do my “Sacred” duty to my pack.” He chuckles again, deeper this time. He seems to relax almost imperceptibly, his accent becoming more prominent.
“That’s interesting. I’m assuming it has to do with Bugs Bunny here?” He holds up the cage containing the rabbit, shit you must’ve dropped it when you fell. “Yes. It has to do with the rabbit.” His smirk turns into a small smile, his sage scent getting slightly stronger. He sits the cage at your feet. “Run pup.” He snickers. “One minute headstart~”
You don’t need to tell me twice. You grab the cage and run. You run and run. Several minutes pass with no thundering footsteps. “Did he let me go…?” you murmur softly as the tree comes into view. You place the cage down and take the rabbit out, grabbing the knife from the cloth you take a breath. “I’m sorry bunny..” you place the rabbit at the roots of the tree and drive the blade into its skull quickly, ensuring there’s no pain. You drag the blade along the neck of the creature and lay it in a comfortable position.
From the still quiet suddenly bursts snarls from 3 separate directions. “Fuck..” you murmur. The rabbit's blood must’ve drawn them. The wolves step out, you can only imagine they’re Strays, you’d grown up hearing that hybrid wolves were more intimidating than purebloods, because of the unnatural glow of their eyes but you never believed it. But with 3 pairs on you at once, the rumor is gaining some traction.
One of them, a brown wolf with amber eyes, suddenly lunges. It flies through the air with practiced precision, now only 3 feet away from you when suddenly, it’s on the ground. Another wolf towering over it, snarling like never before. The wolf from earlier! The one that chased you and then let you free! But why would he protect you…? He’s a Stray..
You catch a glimpse of the look in his eyes. Pure rage. He looks feral as he pins the other wolf down. The other 2 immediately back down which leads you to one conclusion. The black wolf is the alpha. But why would he…the realization strikes you. Has he…imprinted on his enemy…?
The Winterblooms and the Strays had always been enemies all because of one striking difference. The Strays were hybrids. Wolf and vampire. The stories go back decades. Centuries even. It all started when the treaty was broken. The treaty was what kept them in peace, forbidding either side from attacking the other. The treaty was broken because a girl named Ella from the Winterbloom pack fell for a man named Seth from the Strays. Seth’s father found out about the relationship and wasn’t happy but made no move to stop it. But when Ella's father found out she was pregnant, she was slaughtered for treason against the pack.
This sent Seth into a frenzy and he slaughtered Ella’s father in the name of revenge. What he didn’t realize in his crazed state was that he just breached the treaty. After the Winterblooms sent Seth’s body back to the Stray territory, it began. This incident sent the clans into an all out war. It was bloody, gruesome, and both sides lost many. It ended in a draw, both sides weakened.
That was way back in 1825. 200 years ago. There have been minor battles and scuffles since then nothing as gruesome as the war. They call it the Battle Of The Blood Moon, because it is believed that the amount of blood spilled tinted the moon that beautiful yet horrifyingly brilliant crimson that has appeared every two years since.
After the battle, crops ran dry. Your ancestors believed it was the gods wrath. A penalty for spilling so much wolven blood. For embracing the carnage without repent. Therefore, every year since, on the eve of the battle, a pure woman must go to the tree of where the ancestors were laid to rest and make a sacrifice. A pure white rabbit.

You’ve just gotten the break you needed for your job, you're an accountant at an office, saving up so you can afford to become the artist you want to be.
This promotion at your job means you need to move 4 hours away from your hometown, you’re sad of course but you’ve been dying to get out of there anyway and this is the perfect excuse.
After a lengthy sweet goodbye with your mom and a quick one with your father, you head to his house and say goodbye to his mom, not bothering to say goodbye to his father before you leave.
Packing your stuff into his car that she'd bought for him when he turned 16 that belongs to you now because his mother didn’t want to sell it and you needed a car so it made the most sense to give it to you. She wanted you to have a piece of him anyway.
After weeks of house hunting you could only find one within your budget, it’s an old house, it looks straight out of a horror movie if you're honest. The moving men only help move the heavy things into the old dusty house before leaving you to yourself with the container outside. You're too tired to arrange anything but your bed before you lay down and fall asleep.
Waking up later than you would have wished to, you pad down to the kitchen to begin unpacking. you had thought it better to start in the kitchen so you had food. Looking around to determine what box to start with, you see one of the boxes labeled “Glass Dishes” on the island that you could have sworn you set on the floor. “That’s weird. I must have been too tired to remember”
You reach into your purse to get the knife you always had on you for protection, Han had given it to you for your birthday one year after he saw you gaze at it too long in a shop window. Gripping the knife you slice into the tape holding the cardboard down and remove the bubble wrap protecting the fragile glass
As you fill the cabinets with the glass cups, one slips from you hand falling and shattering into sparkling pieces on the wooden floor
“Shit” you mutter as you attempt to pick up the pieces and a shard slices your hand open “Fuck!” You shout holding your bleeding hand
You run up the stairs to the bathroom where you had the box with medical supplies before digging through the box with one hand “Where the fuck is it!?” You begin to panic as the blood runs down your raised arm dripping from your elbow leaving droplets of blood that you’ll have to clean later
You decide to check your room for the kit you had in your nightstand box. As you rummage through the box you swear you hear a groan then feel a gust of wind
When you look up you find the small med kit you had been searching for on your bed and you were certain you had not left it there. You hadn’t touched the bed since you woke up.
You walk back to the bathroom to take care of the injury and wince when you realize it’s deeper than you first thought
After cleaning the wound and dressing it you start to clean the trail of crimson you had left behind but find an abrupt end to it in the dining room. You could’ve sworn you had cut yourself on glass in the..”Where the hell is the glass?” You gasp softly as you look into the kitchen to find a perfectly clean floor with no glimmering shards of glass
You must have cleaned it before going upstairs. You scoff at yourself for having believed someone was in your house and forgetting yourself.
You finish unpacking with a slight struggle due to the hindrance of your hand, the dishes are put away but you still have no food.
“Well the kitchen’s done. I should probably go get some groceries”
You search the house for your keys but can’t seem to find them “What did I do with my keys?”
You’d resorted to patting yourself down at least 7 times before you hear a loud bang upstairs
‘What was that?’ so many thoughts ran through your mind as you padded up the stairs. When you arrived at the location the bang had come from all you found was a box on the ground and your keys lying next to it “this is starting to get really weird.” you looked around then bent down to pick your keys up.
‘I'll just call Felix when I get back, this place must be haunted or something. He’s into that spiritual occult stuff’ you thought before you almost tripped on something going down the stairs
You bent down to pick the item up, it was the knife han gave you ‘I don’t remember leaving this on the stairs, I must have dropped it when I ran up the stairs’ you pondered. You slid it into your purse and headed out the door.
You got into your car and started off to the market after punching it into your GPS. You park, go in, grab your groceries, and head back out to load them. You might as well have played a game of tetris with how many bags you had to fit into the car.You get back home and put them all away.
You spend a few hours unloading the living room while ranting to Felix on call about all that had happened “It’s definitely either a ghost or a vampire!” he yelled after thinking for a moment “Felix, don’t be ridiculous! Vampires don’t exist and neither do ghosts.” you chuckle as he goes off on a rant about how they are real and that the movies are wrong and that most of them aren’t dangerous “Y’know maybe Han turned into a vampire and he left to protect us all!” he chuckled but quickly stopped when you turned “Felix. Stop that. It isn’t funny at all.” you said angrily stopping what you were doing to look at your phone propped up on your tv stand you placed against the wall only to see Felix staring behind you “Felix? What are you looking at?”
This seemed to snap him out of it “I- um- I saw- Nevermind. I’m sorry” he shakes his head “No Felix, what did you see?” he frowns “I-I thought it was Han. I thought I saw him behind you.” you sigh and put your hands on your hips angrily “Felix! That really isn’t funny! It’s so messed up you would say that! Han is gone and you wouldn’t even know what he looked like! It’s been years!”
His bottom lip jutted out “That’s why I didn't want to say anything! I knew you wouldn’t believe me!” you shake your head “Felix there isn’t anyone here” you shake your head and look back at Felix's face but he now looks terrified “Y/N do not back up” he says suddenly
You begin to back up from instinct “Felix? What are you talking abou-” Your back hits something sturdy and you freeze
A low rumbling voice speaks behind you “He isn’t far off.” before you can register what they said you grab your phone and run upstairs locking the door and dialing 911, but right as you start to press the call button a chilled breeze runs past your body and your phone is gone from your hand “Whoa whoa calm down! It’s me!” you feel them press against your back, they’re so close you should be able to feel the heat radiating from them, but you feel nothing except a chill.
You turn to look at the offending figure and see something you never thought you’d see again..

This chapter is mostly angsty backstory stuff (Forgive me🙏🏻)
Your life had been bleak ever since his disappearance. You had met him in 1st grade when he moved to your school. You had been selected to show him around because you were top of your class and the only girl who wasn’t drooling over him at your young age.
You two had hit it off instantly, chatting about your favorite places to visit with your parents and your favorite shows or toys. Normal things for first graders to talk about. As the years went by you grew closer, by 4th grade you were inseparable and by 5th grade you would go everywhere together. By this point you had all but forced your parents to become friends. They hit it off well anyway, boasting about how proud they were of you both and how happy they were when you became friends as neither of you had any luck in that field before each other.
You had also grown close to his parents, thinking of them as a second pair to yours. Thats why it hurt so bad when his father blamed you. At 5th grade graduation, you and Han were standing together when the photographer the school booked approached you “a photo for the yearbook lovebirds?” she asked innocently “Oh me and her aren't a couple” Han had laughed in despite the blush spreading down his neck. “Oh I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to-” “It’s alright” you had gently cut her off before she skittered away embarrassed.
After that you started to see him in a different way. Especially watching him grow from a boy to man through middle school.
You watched as his jawline grew sharper, his eyes rounder, his body growing in height and build. He had started working out in 7th grade along with your mutual friends Chan, Minho, Changbin, Hyunjin, Felix, Seungmin, and Jeongin.
You had developed this group near the end of 6th grade after you caught Felix crying in a corner about ice cream and tried to comfort him, for which Chan had thanked you profusely.
You don't know when you realized you loved him, truly loved him. Maybe during summer break before freshman year when you had all played spin the bottle. Of course your spin had to land on him, you’ll remember that kiss for the rest of your days.
You don't like to talk about freshman year, the memories to bittersweet. It’s the year he went missing. The last time you had seen the most important thing to you before he was ripped from your grasp with no chance for goodbyes. The party was fun at first, drinks, loud music, and your friends. At some point you were pulled from the dance floor by Hyunjin who said it was time to go. You were getting cold in your rather skimpy outfit your sister Gina convinced you to wear so you agreed.
You agreed to meet the boys outside after your favorite song ended and they agreed, saying they would be in the cars waiting. After dancing to your favorite song you began to leave stepping out into the chilly November air, when you noticed a group of boys from your grade staring. You walked past them before hearing one of them catcall you, it was the darker vibed one. He always dressed in black and wore hoods,he scared you honestly. You had gotten used to being catcalled at this point, the curves your mother gave you were a blessing and curse, you’d been played with and harassed but never physically. So when he grabbed you, a slap rang across the surrounding area. Before you knew what happened you had slapped him clean across the face. You just slapped Jayce.
Jayce, with a shocked expression on his face throws your wrist out of his hold before approaching you menacingly as you close your eyes tightly. “You dirty little slut.” as he raises his hand a loud thud sounds in your ear. You open your eyes and Jayce is laid on the ground, an enraged Jisung huffing beside you with bloody knuckles. “Han?” “Go to the car Y/N” Han growled “Han you’re coming with me. You have to” Jayce begins to get up clearly pissed off “No. Y/N go to the car. I’ll be fine i promise.Just go and I’ll take my car when I’m done” you nod and run to the car “Han said to go, he’ll take his car home.”
After you get home you get a text from Han
Han: I’m fine and I’m home princess
Y/N: Ok Han goodnight
Little did you know this would be the last text you’d receive from him
Han didn't show up to school the next day, you tried texting him but to no avail. Days turned to weeks which turned to months. Finally your mom allows you to go to his house now rid of the fear of Han being sick and you catching it. You run the 28 minutes to the Han residence before not so kindly pounding on the door. Hans' mother opens the door “Oh! y/n what brings you here?” you're still panting from running “Is Jisung here? He hadn't been at school and I'm very worried” you pant in between words. Han’s mothers face drops instantly
“Oh honey, your father didn’t tell you? Jisung has..been missing since that party..” she says while tearing up you shake your head “N-no he can’t be missing. He texted me. He said he was home!” “He did, but he went out again. He said he forgot something in his car and never came back” she pulls you close petting your hair and consoling you when a deep voice sounds behind you “How did you not know? It’s your fault my son is gone, you left him.” his father says coldly
Mrs. Han smacks him “Now stop that! It isn't true!”
After she drove you home you got into a heated fight with your father. He knew. This whole time he knew and he said nothing. He listened while you talked about how worried you were and did not say anything.
The boys reacted the same way you did, heartbroken sobs, anger, hatred. For the next 3 years you all worked with the police to look for him. Until one day the police chief calls, “Hey kid” he sighs “I know this means a lot to you but I'm sorry, the search is off. The kids' case is closed, we can't spend anymore time on this, we've done all we can.”
You argued with the chief but to bo avail. It was over. Han Jisung was gone.
