Oil-and-gas wells produce nearly a trillion gallons of toxic waste a year. An investigation shows how it could be making workers sick and contaminating communities across America.
The author of this story in Rolling Stone, Justin Nobel, is writing a book about oil-and-gas radioactivity.
Background: “Brine ” is a naturally occurring waste product that gushes out of America’s oil-and-gas wells. About on trillion gallons a year are extracted from these wells. It collects in tanks, and like an oil-and-gas garbage man, a disposal truck picks it up and hauls it off to treatment plants or injection wells, where it’s disposed of by being shot back into the earth. This Rolling Stone story focuses on Peter, one of the truck drivers who hauls brine from wells in southeast Ohio to disposal sites.
Excerpt:
The Earth’s crust is in fact peppered with radioactive elements that concentrate deep underground in oil-and-gas-bearing layers. This radioactivity is often pulled to the surface when oil and gas is extracted — carried largely in the brine.
Peter started quietly taking samples of the brine he hauled, filling up old antifreeze containers or soda bottles. Eventually, he packed a shed in his backyard with more than 40 samples. Through a grassroots network of Ohio activists, Peter was able to transfer 11 samples of brine to the Center for Environmental Research and Education at Duquesne University, which had them tested in a lab at the University of Pittsburgh. The results were striking.
Radium, typically the most abundant radionuclide in brine, is often measured in picocuries per liter of substance and is so dangerous it’s subject to tight restrictions even at hazardous-waste sites. The most common isotopes are radium-226 and radium-228, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires industrial discharges to remain below 60 for each. Four of Peter’s samples registered combined radium levels above 3,500, and one was more than 8,500.
“Breathing in this stuff and ingesting it are the worst types of exposure,” [John Stolz, Duquesne’s environmental-center director says]. “You are irradiating your tissues from the inside out.” The radioactive particles fired off by radium can be blocked by the skin, but radium readily attaches to dust, making it easy to accidentally inhale or ingest. Once inside the body, its insidious effects accumulate with each exposure. It is known as a “bone seeker” because it can be incorporated into the skeleton and cause bone cancers called sarcomas. It also decays into a series of other radioactive elements, called “daughters.” The first one for radium-226 is radon, a radioactive gas and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. Radon has also been linked to chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Peter’s samples are just a drop in the bucket. Oil fields across the country — from the Bakken in North Dakota to the Permian in Texas — have been found to produce brine that is highly radioactive. “All oil-field workers,” says Fairlie, “are radiation workers.” But they don’t necessarily know it.
With fracking — which involves sending pressurized fluid deep underground to break up layers of shale — there is dirt and shattered rock, called drill cuttings, that can also be radioactive. But brine can be radioactive whether it comes from a fracked or conventional well; the levels vary depending on the geological formation, not drilling method. Colorado and Wyoming seem to have lower radioactive signatures, while the Marcellus shale, underlying Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York, has tested the highest. Radium in its brine can average around 9,300 picocuries per liter, but has been recorded as high as 28,500. “If I had a beaker of that on my desk and accidentally dropped it on the floor, they would shut the place down,” says Yuri Gorby, a microbiologist who spent 15 years studying radioactivity with the Department of Energy. “And if I dumped it down the sink, I could go to jail.”
“There is no one federal agency that specifically regulates the radioactivity brought to the surface by oil-and-gas development,” an EPA representative says. In fact, thanks to a single exemption the industry received from the EPA in 1980, the streams of waste generated at oil-and-gas wells — all of which could be radioactive and hazardous to humans — are not required to be handled as hazardous waste.

Lottie sang softly to herself as she cut out the shapes of little people in the cookie dough, any if her children would know her homemade gingerbread cookies, sure it wasn't Christmas but Lottie had always argued that Ginger snaps were the same just not people shaped so they should be about year round.
Of course she decorated them different this time they were going to be super heroes this time. Besides she was making extra to bring over to Jane and will, she knows Jane prefers the blood tastes but a sweet treat would make for sweet children! That was what she had always learned anyways. She heard he door open and didn't sense an enemy as of late it wasn't uncommon for their door to open
"in the kitchen," she called besides she was in a kitchen surrounded by spells, knives and spoons she was fine.
Will poked his head in, “hullo Lottie,” he smiled. “Jane is taking a nap so I thought I would come over and see how you both were doing. Also wondering if you have seen our favorite Anti-Christ and his beloved Queen of Hell?”
Lottie smiled and looked up "will! Do me a quicj favor and grab he tray from the oven with the mitts?" Lottie asked as she sprinkled a little Ginger onto the cookies
"fraid I haven't in a bit, was thinking about whipping them up a batch of my famous cookies and inviting all of ya for tea but hadn't gotten that far yet"
Will did as he was told, “that’s the thing, Crowley is missing, Aziraphael too! Hades and Kit too name more. Now I can’t find Aurelia and Puck and that means trouble but even more who is running Hell?”
"probably the other princes less they were dumb enough to try to bring lucifer back" Lottie said not at all concerned by her own statement as she started mixing some colorful frosting as well
"we'd likely know if that were the case by now though wouldn't we? Besides they're all adults, the only ones ya should be worried about are the princess and her little friend"
“Maybe so but all of them going missing around the same time?” Will said sneaking a cookie but offering a smile. “You are the best baker I swear Lottie, Olga is blessed to have you.”
“On that we both agree,” Olga said coming in. “I thought I recognized the sound of William Shakespeare.”
“Giving Jane a quiet house to rest in, her hearing is twice what it usually is and it is already superb. She can hear me in the garden.”
"let's hope her appetite is good too, I thought she'd like some cookies" Lottie said to him smiling a bit and ignoring his thieving hands as she
"how's the pregnancy going? Morning sickness being ok?" Lottie asked him she did think it was a bit strange but perhaps they were planning a surprise? It was a big city they could be anywhere
“Morning sickness subsided, now she seems ready to give birth anyday now.” Will said patting one of the fey animals that did roam the house. Occasionally they would end up in his house’s yard.
Lottie was surprised and opened her mouth to ask before she paused to think seeming to debate
"Crowley?" She asked knowing the impatient demon had mentioned how long it took which was kind of funny coming from a guy who didn't marry his husband for six thousand years
“Yes, which you can now understand as to why I would be wondering at the location of said demon. Something tells me she won’t give birth till he returns.” Will frowned softly. “Which has me concerned.”
Lottie nodded understandably she supposed if he was this worried ti should be something that they should look into
“Alright, let me finish prepping these last cookies for the oven and i’ll prep up a location spell. You’ll need something from at least one person each to try and find them.” Lottie told him dusting some flour on her apron and putting the new tray into the oven before she also playfully poked Olga’s cheek smearing some leftover flour on it with a smirk as she walked around the island and headed for the supply cupboard
Will nodded, a scarf left by Crowley, another by Aziraphale, Drac had left his glasses there at Wil’s house. Jane had borrowed some heels from Honey some months back, and Aurelia had a dress and where Aurelia was Puck would be. He set the items down, “now what do you need me to do?”
“Stand back Bard for the witch is to take the stage.” Olga patted his back then snuck a kiss to her wife.
Lottie smiled at her and handed Olga all the components she’d need for the spell and grabbed a couple of maps from the closet the first one was of the city they were likely somewhere around here in the city though it was possible Honey and Drac had gone to his home as well and hades likely could be in hell but she didn’t think he’d bring Felicity there again if he could avoid it
Will watched Olga sipping the tea he had been given.
Olga used the essences of each person that had been left residually on each belonging. Scrying for each person not one of them were in the city anymore. “Odd they have moved beyond the city.” She frowned. “Even the fairy Princess.” She went to the globe which began spinning and whirling, stopping suddenly on the axis revealing Greece. “Why would they be in Greece?”
I can’t wait to get married because its like a sleepover every night with your best friend.
That’s the cutest description of marriage I’m not even joking
Lottie smiled as she woke up and cuddled close to her wife, already feeling the chill of the air before she got out of bed even. She wrapped her arms around Olga and kissed Olga's cheek before she snuggled closer to her and shut her eyes again
" 's cold," Lottie murmured Olga was always so warm, it must have been her slavakian blood
Lottie shut her eyes and relax letting her wife's healing hands go as they pleased
"good, thank you" Lottie said to her Olga was right about one thing she definitely had magic hands
Olga pulled out some lotion and smoothed it over her hands till it was warm once again putting pressure on the knot and the surrounding area. “Good.”
Lottie took in a sharp intake of breath when Olga hit a tender spot but relaxed again as it passed
"thank you dear, you're so amazing" Lottie told her smiling
“You are amazing yourself Lottie,” she kissed the back of her wife’s head keeping her hands working on that knot and the surrounding area. “No one can make a home feel like home like you.”
Lottie chuckled a bit
"you give me to much credit love, you know I'm nothing without you my dear" Lottie told her glancing over her shoulder
"And I am without you? I think not," she kissed her wife's cheek. "You are the light of my life love."
Lottie smiled as she woke up and cuddled close to her wife, already feeling the chill of the air before she got out of bed even. She wrapped her arms around Olga and kissed Olga's cheek before she snuggled closer to her and shut her eyes again

Olga magicked another blanket on top of her wifey. "Darling it is always cold this time of year, thank the stars you have me my darling." She shifted and rested her head on her beloved. "Now then why don't we get some hot tea while we cuddle?"
Lottie shook her head a little
"no, stay here. So warm" Lottie said she kissed Olga's cheek and a small smile graced her face as she snuggled close
“Lottie, if you squeeze me any harder I might just pop.” Olga shook her head but made no move to change the way her wifey held her. “I love you.”
Lottie smiled and opened her eyes looking up at her
"ya love it," Lottie told her giggling she kissed her cheek but she did loosen her hug a little
"love you too," Lottie said reaching out and brushing some hair back from Olga's face
Olga stroked the soft hair of Lottie and kissed her gently. “I believe I love you more.” She booped her wife’s nose.
Lottie shook her head a bit
"if you start this argument my love we may never make it outta bed" Lottie told her giggling a little bit
"Oh no dear what ever shall we do?" Olga tackled her wife, "you know I don't think we have had a moment alone in quite some time."
"by that do ya mean ever?" Lottie asked quirking a brow at her
"between the fae constantly coming to me fer help and yer family, not ta mention the boys and Ava"
"I think we have earned a day in bed," Olga smirked and kissed her wife soundly. "Massage darling I saw you nursing your shoulder and we both know I have magic hands."
Lottie smiled at her
"why do I get the feeling you're not thinking of my comfort?" Lottie asked quirking a brow before she did anything though she texted her errol and told him to take care of the creatures in the basement, he would know how and enjoy it.
Lottie then turned on her stomach so Olga could reach her back
"give it your best shot love"
Olga gave a mock look of offense, "I have your very best interests at heart my dear." She proceeded to move her hands giving pressure in the right areas to relieve the tension if Lottie's muscles. "How is that dear?" She asked after a moment.
