Fey stared off into the air as she listened to Ana speak about her experience, as though an idea was forming afloat in front of her…

“I think I might, actually… I haven’t done a very good job yet, myself, at distinguishing H20 from other molecules in the air, but… They are still the only part of the air I can affect. It might not be exactly where you want to get to yet, but it might be a good place to start if I can cause vibration in the water vapor enough for you to separate it from the rest and alter the humidity… Does that make sense?”

Ana furrowed her brow as she contemplated the concept proposed by the Hydromancer. After a few moments of silent pondering of logistics, “I believe I do.” She breathed, a small smile formed on her lips with bright eyes filled with excitement. “I think it’d help with the distinguishing factor. Kind of like.. training wheels, per say.” She chuckled lightly. With a deep inhale, she straightened her posture. “I’m ready whenever you are.”

“You know I can’t help but notice you seem a little at war with yourself here.”

“Hardly.” Ana breathed, her focus centred on maintaining her poise and neutrality. “And you call me, nosy. But please, do tell me what kind of war you believe is brewing.”

“.. I don’t know. Maybe? How long have you been thinking about this?”

Fey smiled as the girl sat beside her, glad that she had made the right choice in location and that Ana seemed so excited for this. Fey was excited herself, but for her own reasons. That was for another time, though. Right now, she just needed to gain a little trust and see if she could help out a fellow witch.

“That’s just fine… And I guess… I don’t know. You said you were working on trying to change air composition, right? How much practice have you had actually connecting with air on a molecular level?”

“Right. In theory, plenty. After all, any kind of kinetic manipulation is practically a physical influence of molecules.” She stated as a matter of fact, utilising what knowledge of her affinity she had gained from research and discussions with her professors. “In practice..” She hesitated, a small sheepish smile formed on her lips. “Not a lot. It’s the ability to distinguish, that seems to be my greatest challenge. It would be an easier practice to physically seperate out the molecules, like moving the Oxygen content out of the air, rather than try and change said Oxygen molecules into more Nitrogen.” She paused for a moment. “Not that removing Oxygen from air is easy to practice. The whole ‘needing oxygen to breath’ whilst performing magic makes it difficult to practice. Though, if you’ve got any advice, I’m all ears.”

“I was almost starting to think you weren’t coming,” Fey greeted as she finally spotted Ana coming up the rocks.

She remembered that Ana had been nervous about causing any damage to the school or students, traumatic history and all, so Fey thought it would be a good idea to go out to the lake for their first session. There was a spot up on the rocks that she liked to go, out of earshot of anyone who might have come out to the shore, so she had been sitting up there with her legs dangling off the edge, waiting for her new training partner.

It had taken longer than Ana had anticipated to reach the secluded lake. But as she ventured from the security of the school buildings, a sense of calm settled over her. She was aware of the dangerous nature of going to a remote area with someone she barely knew, but the intrigue the witch sparked within her was something she could not ignore. Ana was not one to shy from mystery, or academic pursuits.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting, I got a little lost. But I’d rather it be this way than being close to campus.” She offered apologetically as she perched herself next to Fey on the rocks. “I must admit, I’ve been looking forward to this all day. I couldn’t have left Spell Writing any faster. But now that we’re here - how does this.. work?”

Seeing the witch’s deep blush made Logan grin, almost forgetting she was still on fire. “Where’s the fun in being classy?” she responded dryly to Ana’s insult. Logan’s brow furrowed as the other girl went for her water bottle and proceeded to toss contents onto her. The small amount of water did little to help, instead resulting in a bit of steam blowing of Logan’s person. “A water bottle? Come on Carrots those brains are better than that,” Logan began laughing loudly at both the attempt and her comment. She wasn’t sure what exactly was making her laugh so hard, the feeble attempt or the way Logan got under Ana’s skin. But whatever it was had allowed her to mentally relax just for a moment, and perhaps that’s why a moment or two later the flames extinguished themselves. 

Frustration brewed as Ana stood her ground, not daring to give an inch or any indication of amusement as the flaming girl laughed. Her clenched jaw began to relax as she watched the fire simmer on its own. “With any luck, you’ll make it through the week without burning this place to the ground.” She jibed through pursed lips. “And just when I think I’ve got a handle on you, you throw something new my way. Always full of surprises.” She breathed as she slung her bag over her shoulder once more. She refused to drop her gaze, arching her brow as she examined the witch. “I would like to think that this is the whole reason you’ve come here. But if you’ve taught me anything, it’s not to assume. So, what does bring you here, Logan?”

“No, no, no, not like that. It’s just–well, I used to do a lot of bad things. A lot of stupid things, like smoking. I’ve been trying to stop, but it’s not really working. And I just don’t want to get in trouble anymore.” He felt nervousness creep up on him. “I was kind of known for getting in trouble, actually.”

“I’m not here to judge, it’s okay.” She reaffirmed gently. “You hardly seem like the type to cause mayhem. All I see is - sweet. I can keep a secret, don’t worry about that. But so we’re clear, what kind of trouble are you referring to?”

Raina nodded in agreement with the witch. In the years that she’d spent at Brattington so far, she’d already learned so much. At her inquiry, Raina hesitated a moment before answering, “Well, essentially I can sort of transfer my own energy, or rather life-force, to you or anyone else. But that also means that I can take someone else’s life-force. It can be small bits of the energy or it could be all of it. So I have to be very careful and always have control when I’m touching someone.”

The hint of hesitation, the carefully crafted phrasing of her explanation, they reminded Ana of times when she was prompted to speak of her own affinity. She tried to reassure the girl as gently as possible, a small smile falling across her lips as she nodded along. “I suppose sneaking up on you is a less favourable thing to do. But equally, how remarkable. I’ll admit, I have limited experience with energy and life affinities. So appreciate you taking the time to explain.”

Fey smiled at the girl’s attempt to joke about her difficult past. She was clearly the strong type, and Fey could admire that, but oh was she going to have fun seeing just how strong this girl really was…

“Perfect. Let’s exchange numbers, then,” she answered with a grin as she took her phone out of her bag and and held it over to the girl.

Ana took hold of the phone, and with nimble fingers, added her number to the contacts before sending a text message to her own number to ensure she had the witch’s number. She held the phone out to return with an assuring smile. 

“It all seems in order. I suppose I can admit, more came of this than I expected. I’ll be awaiting your text.”

“Yeah, of course! It’s almost like this was fate,” she chimed, mentally gagging over the word fate. She hoped she wasn’t overdoing this whole sweet and hopeful thing she had going on, but at least it seemed to be going okay. If the witch did agree, then Fey would already have a chance to meet her again and really pick through the girl’s brain.

“As long as you’re up for it, I think we could really help each other out.”

As if a spell had ceased its hold on her, the word fate resonated with a wariness within her. She was not one to believe in fates, the alignments of the stars, or even bother using the horoscopes in the paper as anything more than fire kindling. In Ana’s eyes, such a belief spoke to a mindset lacking control, one of whims on illogical principles. 

An almost imperceptible quirk in her brow appeared, quickly followed by a gracious smile. An opportunity to find out more about the witch had presented, and she found herself wishing to know more. Not to mention, using her expertise.

“Well, then you’re on. Sometime in the next few days, after class. And somewhere secluded, you know, just in case. I can’t add another school to my tally.” She teased light-heartedly.

The witch’s idea sparked prime opportunity, and the excitement was plain as day in Fey’s eyes. 

“Actually… I think that could be great,” she began, eagerly shifting in her seat as she prepared to continue. “Think about it. I’ve had plenty of practice with changing an element’s state, so I know how to channel energy through the molecules… And I’m sure you know plenty about air and all that makes it up… We could really help each other.”

Her strong sense of perception was again set on edge, as the clear excitement in the hydromancer’s eyes made her smile for the most inconceivable of reasons. Ana found herself in the orbit of someone who was infectious, a far cry from the solitude she had often imposed on herself in the pursuit of focus. But as Fey explained the reason for her eagerness, it all seemed so perfect. “When you put it that way, it would be a most effective use of our time.” She mused in agreement, clinging to the logical nature of her reasoning. “And you’re willing to do all of this?” She questioned, an element of disbelief in her tone as she arched her brow.

“Manhattan. Not the nicest place.” It could have been, if he weren’t himself. But unfortunately the Upper West wasn’t his style. “Disappearances aren’t great, but most people are safe, and there’re more protections in place now.” It also could have been a choice. Not everyone disappeared willingly, but perhaps some had. He did it all the time. Adam had almost decided to disappear from Brattington as well. He would eventually, too. But not yet.

“It’s a give an’ take, and I’m not the nicest. Most people who’ve found out about it haven’t on purpose, and didn’t exactly do it nicely. And not many people are magical. Definitely freaks people out when they break their nose and you bleed for them.” Or when you cut yourself and they did. Although it was useful in a fight. “Guess I’m playing nice today, though.” Adam’s brows furrowed as he said that, realizing that he was a lot more open than he had been in a while. He stiffened, unsure as to why. Or where to go from here. A nervous laugh escaped him.

“I wouldn’t really know, if I’m honest. I’m unfamiliar with the area.” Ana spoke candidly, unfamiliar with the nuances of the American cities. She had spent minimal time in that country, preferring to remain in the sanctuary that Brattington provided. “I suppose so, but until we know what exactly is going on, can you truly feel safe?” She asked with a genuine curiosity. The question had gnashed and gnawed on any spare thought in her mind, polluting her pure curiosity with a darker shade to her wonderment and speculation. 

“If you weren’t explaining it as patiently as you are now, I could see how that could be confronting. But all of that, it strikes me close to home.” She admitted softly, for something about his honesty charmed her, and loosened her tongue. “I like it when you play nice, if that’s any consolation. And don’t worry, I can keep a secret, if you’d rather keep a brooding persona.”

At the sight of Ana skirting the blast zone, Logan couldn’t help but groan. The last person she wanted to see her having a magical breakdown. “I don’t know find something to put me out before I catch the grounds on fire?” She called out. Logan fought the urge to laugh at the girl’s next statement. “I’m more of a fingering girl myself,” she answered shamelessly. “But I don’t think either is going to stop this fire.”

The response seemed entirely logical, and as Ana rummaged through her backpack for her water bottle, she chastised herself for not acting quicker. The crude reply she received made her blush a deeply, though she would only admit to the rose colour being a result of the heated flames. “You have impeccable class.” She shouted sardonically, throwing down her bag as she gripped her water bottle. Propelled by the impending sense of danger, she uncapped her bottle, placed herself in the immediate vicinity of the blaze and threw the contents of her bottle at the girl. “Even if you weren’t on fire, I would’ve done the same.”

“It’s no worse than where I grew up,” he brushed off the comment. Shit went down in New York all the time. If you kept your head down, took care of yourself, and didn’t complain to much, chances were you’d be alright. There was always bad luck, but that could get you anywhere. “Nothing to worry too much about.”

Adam shrugged slightly at her expression, “Involuntary for now. I’m out of here once I figure it out. No point in inflicting damage, usually.” Except for self defense. That was important. “And no worries,” he offered a rare smile, “No one ever asks, they run. It’s a nice change, I guess.”

“I suppose. Where abouts did you grow up?” Ana asked, curious as ever to understand Adam. “I suppose Brattington is safer than home for a few of us.” She mumbled absentmindedly. Home in Russia did have its challenges, least of which was the presence of her magic. “You say that, but 12 disappearing students, without a trace, seems like something to worry about, no?”

Her expression softened, upon the dawning realisation that he offered little threat to her. In fact, he seemed warm. “That seems like a useful ability. Why such a rush to leave? And it would be incredibly rude, to run. I fear they merely misunderstand. But equally, I find you entirely too interesting and genuine to run. Another nice change.”
